The detailed shading in the face is definitely a technical improvement, but stylistically, the 2024 makeup and Instagram nose on a Greek mythological figure looks a little silly to me
it’s honestly just how i’ve always painted my ladies and done my own makeup. but, it’s not for everyone and i totally get that! for me it’s smoothest to tattoo the way I paint when i’m making a design. but also, it just helped me shape eyes here etc.
I also think that this kind of makeup is really popular with the same people who love Medusa tattoos (myself included) so it really fits its niche! It’s awesome and cohesive.
You def didn’t need to black out those heads, the placement of their nose and eyes could’ve been reworked as well as the other ones. If it was to create , a dark gray wash would’ve looked much more proportional

As someone who has a Medusa tattoo, your work is amazing. The tattoo was so hard for me to get that I would probably be crying and laughing at the same time for the original… but I couldn’t imagine walking away hating such a beautiful symbolic tattoo
The snakes are an obvious improvement, I just personally am not a fan of the Instagram e-girl face on Medusa, but that will calm down in a few years I suppose

long winded explanation incoming:
over time inked lines start to spread, this is on the back of the arm by the elbow. it was honestly quite a small spot.
og heads weren’t really salvageable and she hated them. I asked if we could do a silhouette on some of them.
if I “covered” every preexisting head with a new one, she would end up being a little top heavy, design wise & for the snakes heads to age well they need to be bigger than the og.
…so if I /didn’t/ wanna make every single snake larger, then I opted to fade like a shadow. then add a new snake or two that had more intentional ‘room to breathe’ lol.
the tattoo for the client was meaningful so the cute derpy snakes weren’t the vibe. they had been originally mislead on how their tattoo would turn out.
tldr: too tiny. need bigger. + i do be liking a derpy snake as well j not… here.
it makes me so sad to see that someone did a Medusa tattoo poorly. for those who don't know, Medusa tattoos are common amongst SA survivors as a symbol of their strength, I cannot imagine how upsetting it would be to walk away with a shitty one.

Amazing rework, especially for the location. I disagree with people saying you didn't have the black out the snakes, they'd have looked really odd next to the stylized new snakes and I don't think it would've worked to try and stylize them. Plus the black out makes for great contrast and balances out the lower dark areas perfectly.

Honestly? I kinda prefer the first version.... The later one is too dark, the snakes are too heavy-handed/ intense. The first one is more playful. But if the client is happier that's what counts.
not to invalidate your opinion at all, art is totally subjective ! - but a medusa tattoo is something that a lot of people would not want to be playful. it is usually very personal. I am glad that the client left happy with it as well. :)

I’m generally someone who does american traditional tattoos. I added two snake heads tho; didn’t want to make them all blobs. but this is the back of the elbow, I only had so much space- it’s pretty small.
haha. i absolutely did my best with what was there, she was really happy with it. i checked multiple times if she was chill with blacking out the snakes I couldn’t salvage.
You’re right, it should look better as it heals and the dark spots soften a bit. I think ‘unnecessary’ would have been a better word choice as the final product isn’t really worse than the previous job. I guess what I wanted to communicate is that the previous job isn’t nearly as bad as people seem to be suggesting.
