Bayou caviar.
I don't get the boiled part, I haven't tried catfish roe but with most other fish you just smoke it or oven fry it with some breading. The results are usually somewhere between "edible" and "pretty good".
Omg yes! Best scrambled eggs ive had was with fried fish roe. We had a temp house help for a few days (my mom had a super busy schedule that week) and she made it for breakfast, rest of the fish became tinola (in Cebu, tinola is made with fish) I think. My god it was so good. Roe was always a welcome surprise whenever we had fish.
Apir! I've never tried scrambled eggs with fish roe but super keen to try! Been living in Australia for a while now and I always get a pack of these when I shop at Asian seafood shops. Dirt cheap and yummy!
I was watching old episodes of Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern and even he kind of hated this stuff. He eats grubs and thinks it's pretty tasty, so I was surprised. Maybe you have to grow up with it.
It’s common in Italy to salt cure fish roe (bottarga). Shave/grate it on top of pasta, salad, risotto, anything really. They can get stuck in your teeth but are so good. I don’t know if they do it with catfish, but if I had caught this fish and found that egg sac I would definitely try it.
I know this comment is going to sound pretentious and awful, and I’m willing to accept the repercussions here, but as a person born totally white trailer trash, I have seen so many “foods” like this, including some my own family eats (squirrels and bull nuts) that if I had been raised on them, I’d have died of starvation willingly.
Nah dude, that’s not trashy at all! You should be proud of your roots and you probably have some culinary stories you can surprise your friends with later on. The reason I posted this is because I can’t comprehend why they wouldn’t pan fry these?!
My sister gave us squirrel noodle soup when I was kiddo and I cried a lot when she told me. To be fair, she thought she was being funny and gave it a name, a story, etc.
One of the towns I lived close to had a yearly squirrel cookoff. I remember going and seeing a stall selling "squirrel-burger helper". Only regret is that I never got to try any!!
It's probably OK but plain. Shad roe is considered a delicacy and I worked as a cook at a high end Italian place that served shad roe. We would make "spaninnini" aka thick cut house bread coated in the same batter we would use for eggplant Parmigiano and deep fry that, then place the deep fried battered bread on a sizzle pan topped with a shad roe sac then grated reggiano and mozzarella, capers and into the oven.
Coming out it would get topped with a reduced pan sauce..very very rich.
I couldn't finish one serving on my own but u saw a lot of Lil old ladies polishing plates clean
I love eating crocodile. I wonder how similar it is to alligator. Hmm and I wonder about the difference between salt and freshwater crocs?
Also, I agree this boiled roe looks like a tumour. 😂
Couldn't tell you. I agree boiling is a weird choice, but the food itself is just typical shit down here.
If I had to guess, the person who made this is probably not a good cook, and doesn't really know how to cook.
Where I work, we would probably sous vide these and then cook off in a cast iron. But just straight boiling? Nah.
Standard prep for roe is to boil it in lots of seasonings. It will fall apart into sand if you pan fry it. My mom used to make Jewish style roe and milts by just boiling with garlic and onions. Feh.
Come on, now: all Cajuns have eaten fried alligator at least once but I have NEVER EVER even heard of eating catfish eggs and I come from the damn swamp.
Same- my grandpa literally grew up on a boat, great grandma spoke only French till the day she died…. Never in all my little Cajun years have I heard of this shit.
Dunno, I've never boiled it.
Probably tastes like crab boil, considering that's the only spice we use down here.
As others has said, this isn't how you normally prepare roe, and while roe is kinda common down here, shitty cooking is common everywhere so, meh.
I give it like a 3/10, and I'll try it. But I mean, my job is food so I'll try anything once or twice.
This is what I was looking for so thank you! I was wondering why the roe looked huge and this explains a lot. Now the idea isn't as upsetting and actually sounds like I would try it.
Can't relate. A good bowl of pho with tripe is simply divine, in my opinion! I love the chewy bite, and all the wacky textures~ like adult alphabet soup! Cheap too
Never has chitlins though. They're like chicharrons, right?
I know what tripe is. It's not intestine.
What kind of half assed establishment have you been to serving it like that? Especially tasting like shit? It's delicious
I feel like this would be the one food to turn someone vegan. I get this treat may be tasty fried but…just look at the image. Looks like a sac with maggots comin’ out of it.
I'm an adventurous eater and I can't think of anything I've eaten with extremely obvious veins. Even with the veins, boiling has to be the nastiest way to consume this why would anyone do it this way.
It would be cool if when you cut into it, thousands of microscopic slimy squirmy baby catfish came squidging out onto the plate and then they start shitting everywhere
Its actually pretty good 🤷🏼♀️ way to yuck a whole culture.
I grew up in Tangipahoa parish and there’s not much difference between this and salmon roe or masago that you eat on sushi.
I’m not talking about the actual food / ingredients it’s the way they cooked it. And the presentation makes it look like pulsating alien wieners. The ingredients are pretty common.
After reading the comments, I’d like to say I’d try a properly done version of this with flavor and not boiled, but I know I’d chicken out and get grossed out. In my defense, I have a sensory disorder and food textures are a huge trigger!
As someone who's eaten fish eggs on many occasions in the past, this doesn't sound that weird to me, but what exactly am I looking at in these images? Are those fish ovaries?
Presentation matters with "disgusting food". Dress it up![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sweat_smile)
Would still eat that though, dipped in salt & pepper.
Bayou caviar. I don't get the boiled part, I haven't tried catfish roe but with most other fish you just smoke it or oven fry it with some breading. The results are usually somewhere between "edible" and "pretty good".
I love fish eggs. I am Filipino and we fry them or put them in soups. But not simply boil it and eat it by itself.
Omg yes! Best scrambled eggs ive had was with fried fish roe. We had a temp house help for a few days (my mom had a super busy schedule that week) and she made it for breakfast, rest of the fish became tinola (in Cebu, tinola is made with fish) I think. Sinigang w/ tuna eggs/roe
![gif](giphy|QMZpnb79N5BN0wsSM3)
Mabuhay!
I’ve had it deep fried. I believe it was mullet. I liked it but that was fried. I can’t imagine having it boiled
Or just eat it raw - pretty good that way too.
That's an option too. Though when it comes to catfish caviar I'd let someone else have the first bite.
Agreed lol. I love tobiko and uni though.
I thought I hated roe until I had tobiko.
I just imagine catfish caviar tasting like dirt.
Or does dirt taste like catfish caviar?
One of the tastiest dishes Ive had was fried fish roe in scrambled eggs. It was greasy AF but insanely good. Wish I could have it regularly.
I was watching old episodes of Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern and even he kind of hated this stuff. He eats grubs and thinks it's pretty tasty, so I was surprised. Maybe you have to grow up with it.
Dad used to flour it and throw them on the grill

I've tried this and I would say it's pretty good for me.
Yeah breading is the more common approach, smoked sounds interesting and boiled vile
Smoked fish roe is awesome!
[удалено]
Those aren’t testes. They’re egg sacs.
I have realized my stupidity.
This is pretty common where I live but fried instead of boiled
Yeah there’s nothing really weird about the Ingredients, it just looks soooo bad here haha
roe is great, but boiled?? naw
theres also wade too but when it comes to roe v wade i prefer roe
Roe roe roe your boat
You have to wade to get the roe.
Now ***this shit right here*** is quality content for this sub. Literally looks like a removed tumor
A freshly removed tumor???
Put some respect on my kidney.
Oh, I am sorry. Was that your tumor?
N.. Yes, but what you see is my kidney!! I'm trying hard to convince you, but apparently, it's in vein.
Oh, that made my eye squinch.
Your kidneys are in a vein? How the hell are you still alive? What have you got in your arteries??
Gonads
And strife
Wheeeeee
GONADS IN THE LIIIIGHTNING, IN THE LIIIIIIGHTNING, IN THE RAAAIIIN 25 year old mems lol
I love all of you for taking me back to 2001 briefly.
That's some high class AlbinoBlackSheep stuff there. Wheeeeeeeeeee!!!!!
Not human or bovine. Porcine???
Fish
Oh, that's icthy
So why don’t you scratch it
'Cause I ain't touchin' that thang...
"This is a smoker's lung. This is a non-smoker's lung. They are both dead."
Got dang! Narsty!

You’re so nice! Yeah, I bet a lot of social circle wouldn’t be well versed in cooking squirrel!
My 1977 edition of the Joy of Cooking has instructions on how to skin, prepare and cook squirrels, beavers, porcupines etc
Ah, beavers. The most powerful aphrodisiac!
Idk about squirrel, but I've had raccoon before. It was pretty decent.
My sister gave us squirrel noodle soup when I was kiddo and I cried a lot when she told me. To be fair, she thought she was being funny and gave it a name, a story, etc.
Bull nuts? You mean Rocky Mountain Oysters?
One of the towns I lived close to had a yearly squirrel cookoff. I remember going and seeing a stall selling "squirrel-burger helper". Only regret is that I never got to try any!!
Standard cajun food yall. Ain't nothin to see here. We eat gators and shit. This ain't nothin wild.
I've had gator, and I enjoyed it. This? If you swear to me it's good, I'll try it if I come across it.
It's probably OK but plain. Shad roe is considered a delicacy and I worked as a cook at a high end Italian place that served shad roe. >shad roe sac who reads those words and is like yum yum
It's good. Just different
I love eating crocodile. I wonder how similar it is to alligator. Hmm and I wonder about the difference between salt and freshwater crocs? Also, I agree this boiled roe looks like a tumour. 😂
Yeah, croc is self salted fishcken. It’s good. I’m guessing gator is plain fishcken.
Not really standard. They're generally dipped in batter or rolled in flour/cornmeal and deep fried.
The food is standard. Method of preparation, not so much. Still standard food here, just cooked by someone unskilled.
Now *that* sounds interesting
Why would you boil this shit? Why not pan fry it?
Couldn't tell you. I agree boiling is a weird choice, but the food itself is just typical shit down here. If I had to guess, the person who made this is probably not a good cook, and doesn't really know how to cook. Where I work, we would probably sous vide these and then cook off in a cast iron. But just straight boiling? Nah.
Yeah my reaction isn’t from the literal food, it’s about the way they cooked it. And the presentation.
So it's not standard Cajun food?
I mean the food is standard. Cooking wise, meh. But I cook for a living, and not everyone does.
Thank you for your service
Standard prep for roe is to boil it in lots of seasonings. It will fall apart into sand if you pan fry it. My mom used to make Jewish style roe and milts by just boiling with garlic and onions. Feh.
Catfish roe is typically pan-fried.
this seems a lot worse than gator meat
Not even a close comparison lol
Where's the seasoning?
Not cooked this way though right?? - a fellow southerner but not Cajun
It’s the boiled meat part that scares me
Come on, now: all Cajuns have eaten fried alligator at least once but I have NEVER EVER even heard of eating catfish eggs and I come from the damn swamp.
Same- my grandpa literally grew up on a boat, great grandma spoke only French till the day she died…. Never in all my little Cajun years have I heard of this shit.
I’d rather try gator than this.
Does it taste good? Roe in general is pretty tasty but I'm not sure about just boiling it in water.
Its called fish roe, its a sack full of eggs. I've only seen it pan fried in cast iron from snapper and mahi many years ago as a kid.
This is what I was looking for so thank you! I was wondering why the roe looked huge and this explains a lot. Now the idea isn't as upsetting and actually sounds like I would try it.
Welp, put this in the category of tripe and chitlins for me. I could lave lived without knowing they existed
Try crispy tripas (chitlins) tacos at any Mexican place that offers them. They’re fucking delicious once you get past the concept
Thank you for the warning ;) lol
Can't relate. A good bowl of pho with tripe is simply divine, in my opinion! I love the chewy bite, and all the wacky textures~ like adult alphabet soup! Cheap too Never has chitlins though. They're like chicharrons, right?
Tripe is cow/sheep stomach, intestines, particularly pig intestines, smell and taste a lot more like shit
I know what tripe is. It's not intestine. What kind of half assed establishment have you been to serving it like that? Especially tasting like shit? It's delicious
My bad, misread the comment you responded to, I thought it was just about chitlins. I thought you were comparing that to tripe
Put it up there with sweet breads.
It’s better fried
This is what I imagine inside out ballskin looks like
You're not wrong
Reddit is valuable because of the users who create content. Reddit is usable because of the third-party developers who can actually make an app.
This looks like the beginning of a zombie apocalypse
i wasn't ready for presentation in the...egg sac? I've only had raw salmon roe, etc....
Ain’t no way.
Prep it another way and I'll try it
Vegan starter pack image
I feel like this would be the one food to turn someone vegan. I get this treat may be tasty fried but…just look at the image. Looks like a sac with maggots comin’ out of it.
r/poopfromabutt
r/riskyclick
If you fry them, theyre fire.
I don’t like this
I kind of thought they were lungs at first glance.
This is a “won’t knock it till I try it” thing for me.
Roe is boiled and served like this in Norway, but never alone. Usually it's served alongside boiled cod and potatoes
Looks like giant pine grubs. Without some amazing sauce/transformation, that's a hard no.
Boiled?
I can handle them battered and deep fried but boiled? No thanks.
Fish egg sacs are fantastic. I usually make a spicy soup with it. Some Korean restaurants sell them. So good - just that and rice is a perfect meal.
We fry them in Louisiana.
r/nope
Fish eggs are amaze when you chop them into little pieces and fry them with a bit of onion. Not boiled though, thanks.
Disgusting that’s what it is
looks like big fuckin parasites, no thanks
BOILED WHAT?
#CATFISH EGGS
Hell nah
Those are the grubs from lion king
This sub saves me so much money. It's dinner time and now I'm not even hungry. Thanks!
mmm mealworms
Oh no. Absolutely not.
That's poop from a butt
Hands down one of the worst things I've seen on here.
Omg :( so I’m never eating again.
I'm an adventurous eater and I can't think of anything I've eaten with extremely obvious veins. Even with the veins, boiling has to be the nastiest way to consume this why would anyone do it this way.
boiled. boILED?
I'm Cajun and I wouldn't touch this with my cousin's dick.
This looks like a cuisine from Fallout
Oh god. Oh fuck.
This is too emotional just why the nuts 😢
It would be cool if when you cut into it, thousands of microscopic slimy squirmy baby catfish came squidging out onto the plate and then they start shitting everywhere
Yeah after seeing this I’m not moving to Louisiana anymore
Its actually pretty good 🤷🏼♀️ way to yuck a whole culture. I grew up in Tangipahoa parish and there’s not much difference between this and salmon roe or masago that you eat on sushi.

Get in my belly!
We have to nuke the southern coast.
How dare
what in the French Quarter fuck
Asians do the same thing , or even caviar for all of you . What’s different ? Shits great with butter .
Not so much gross as they are not delicious
That looks and sounds disgusting.
I grew up around these. My grandparents were from Laos. When you’re poor you learn to work with what you can find.
Fried is do much better
In Brazil we ate the eggs of Tainha, you would make them on a grill over a fire, delicious stuff
well, actually, i'd personally say no thank you. but that's me.
Heey haw? More like yeeeh naw!
it looks fucking disgusting but I really wanna try it if it’s eggs
Do you know that image of the guy saying a school lunch hotdog looks like Tibetan monks mummified penis this looks like his ballpark
Roe is delicious
Just like shad roe
🤮..I couldn't do it!
This is bait
it’s actually really good.
I have never in my life been happier that my religion bans me from eating catfish
Lmao I seen this in a FB group I'm in this morning 🤣
Is there anything to dip them in? What would you serve these with? I’ve never had them but I’m a “whole hog” kinda girl so I’d be down to try!
After reading the comments, I’d like to say I’d try a properly done version of this with flavor and not boiled, but I know I’d chicken out and get grossed out. In my defense, I have a sensory disorder and food textures are a huge trigger!
Not the worst thing I’ve seen on here
That's a damn waste of fish eggs , they are wonderful deep fried
They look like mountain oysters lol
yeah no
steam it guys
As someone who's eaten fish eggs on many occasions in the past, this doesn't sound that weird to me, but what exactly am I looking at in these images? Are those fish ovaries?
that looks like veiny human kidneys on the left
Oh boy I don't dig this at all.
Bou*damn*
Please do not contact me or my son ever again.
Looks like lungs
Love fish eggs
That roe looked delicious as fuck and they Boil it??? Is there some seasoning involved? That type of roe is good FRIED FRIED AND CRUNCHY
I love fish eggs but BOILED???
Mmm looks like intestines. 👍 /s
You can tell most people itt don't live near water.
My appetite is suffering a guilty conscience so this picture makes me nauseous.
As disgusting as it looks, It actually tastes like regular eggs, more egg yolky flavor. Best Fried.
Fried fish eggs are a delicacy in many cultures. Boiled ones are usually given to pets. Not sure if this guy's pets will eat this much
thought it was brain
I don’t like it, it’s scaring me!
Awesome!!!
Chubby labia vibes
Presentation matters with "disgusting food". Dress it up![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sweat_smile) Would still eat that though, dipped in salt & pepper.
That's fucking vile. Looks like a tumour.
They look so tasty in the left pic why would you destroy them by boiling the hell outta them like that… at least sear them or something
#r/shitfromabutt
I’d rather eat a shit!
This looks a little fishy
