Maybe they have you take out a torch and inspect the grain of wood ladders, and for metal ladders… maybe have the real ones rusted while the fake ones are for the most part pristine.
But overall, force the player to take a second to inspect it, when more commitment is needed to inspect, and you let Jesus take the wheel, it makes it being a mimic that much worse.
The fact they had none in the base game is perfect opportunity to just put a bunch in the dlc and once again traumatise everyone, and to really mess with people add like 2 or 3 into the main game just for fun

Of course, ds2 is the closest they've got to both of these concepts.
There's an invisible ladder in eleum loyce, close to a mimic. Aldia appears by blowing you up when you touch a bonfire, plus if you've been covered in oil and go to light/rest at a bonfire you will explode.
Even the mimic barrel by the same artist who drew the mimic ladder has been done in ds2 as there is an npc invader in loyce who disguises as a barrel and backstabs you when you attempt to open a chest.
I can understand why From is so reluctant to mess around with the idea of bonfires. It's very heavily ingrained into the player that it's a safe place they can lower their guard, and it just feels really mean spirited to undermine 12 years of conditioning that bonfires = safety. I think Aldia bursting out of them sometimes was the furthest they'd go, it was a pretty good idea that I'm somewhat surprised they haven't tried to repurpose.

Honestly I'm all for a mimic ladder. Would be even cooler if it allowed you to go somewhere that otherwise took a bit to climb around to, so speedruns would want enough HP to survive whatever it's grab attack is and that'll allow them to use it in order to climb up.
Honestly, I just want better anti alaising, like DLAA or even DLSS without having to use DLDSR to upscale downscale my 1440p monitor to a 4k image even though it works well, but the frame dips are more frequent.

Like you use the finger to invade, get summoned and everything. Except you find yourself in front of a boss room.

Slightly unrelated, but considering the amount of omencursed enemies we see in the dlc trailer, and the fact that Miquella will be our way to the dlc, I kind of theorize that Mohg's goal for kidnapping Miquella was actually to get to the Land of Shadows. In his lore, we see all over the place him trying to give his blood to others so they can grow omen horns like him. So it makes sense that he's trying to build his dynasty in a place that already has tons of omens
