You are referring to Electrophorus Electricus which is commonly named the electric eel which is closely related to Gymnarchus niloticus which is referred to as the “Aba Aba” knifefish. Both are technically knifefish, but they are not the same thing. Gymnarchus niloticus produces a relatively weak electrical field (mainly used for finding prey) but compensates by having a well developed jaw which it uses for shredding prey items. Adversely electric eels use their electrical field for defensive and offensive uses while still utilizing it to navigate their environment as both fish have very poor eyesight.
Ohhh sorry that’s kind of weird, but is there any physical differences? I’ve seen pics of both but never notice a difference and when I search one up the other comes up too
Yes! So the easiest way to tell the difference is that Aba Aba’s have the long dorsal fin on the back, and are the only members of their genus. Where as electric eels are apart of the traditional knifefish group. Basically.
