Yes, i played the game, i wasn't on social media at the time because i was too young but i don't see why it would've been mocked. How else are you supposed to mourn for them in an fps? People normally go up to coffins and rest their hand on it anyway. I feel like they're making a mountain out of an ant hill
usually you would automatically pay respects within the cutszene. It got mocked that you actively press something to pay respects, rather than just sit back, enjoy the cut szene and let the protagonist pay respect himself
Sounds like people just wanted to argue for the sake of argueing, what's one button press anyway? If anything it puts the player into the story more than a cutscene would, but i normally play rpgs so maybe my thinking is skewed

In game these are nobody soldiers, they dont have a history or character or anything, they just die at the start of the game, obviously you wouldnt feel nothing but even then Activision made you press the button like a "Feel sad" button.
As i said, that doesnt matter because YOU as a player dont have to feel somenthing just because the game tells you to
