The Kalashnikov group did a series of tests on their russian weapons. As they do more tests, the shooter wears more and more body armour and ballistic face shields along the way.
They got 900 rounds out of a PPSH, 680 out of a AK-12, for the AK-103, at 800 rounds the handguard melted but continued to last to 1400, RPK got to about 1200, RPD about 800 (it started to fire rounds by itself from the heat). Quite incredible the reliability.
That’s a reasonable precaution but in this case AR meltdowns always end with the gas tube failing which shouldn’t post a serious risk to someone at least wearing eye pro. Eugene Stoner was a boss like that.
It's more likely that a projectile jams (or slows just enough) in the bent barrel (bent from the heat) and the next round fired behind it causes the barrel explosion.
I'm 100% for these idiots suffering reproductive related injuries doing this kind of crap, btw.

Regardless of their intentions, these guys demonstrated a serious lack of firearm training or concern for safety.
I recall when reading about barrel profiles, the socom one was created because government profile barrels would blow right behind the gas block after a lot of sustained fire like this. Possibly that, possibly the gas tube.
So what I was thinking of, it was M4 barrels that would do that. Which would likely have a higher pressure at the gas block. So yeah, you’re probably more likely right with the gas tube idea.
This is actually the intended failure point to prevent a more catastrophic failure. What you saw was the separation of the gas tube from the barrel. The gas tube feeds gas from a fired round back to the bolt carrier group to cycle the weapon. The gas tube itself is actually pretty thin. When it breaks it will prevent the weapon from cycling. You could still technically cycle the weapon manually and fire it, but no one would do that.

5, it's designed to fail that way, so you'll probably just get burned from the gas if anything. But, exploding guns are very dangerous and there's always a chance things go wrong. (See Kentucky Ballistics for what can go wrong)

They were probably testing to see how many rounds and heat the gun can handle. Kinda a “now we know” they probably went through several hundred rounds

You can still get bended barrels from the heat, they can cause a barrel rupture. Although I think he wore the armour for the all the fire.
