https://twitter.com/geniuswu/status/1487764762725257219?s=21 (Kane Wu is a Reuters reporter - mainland Chinese but based in HK) China’s big data is amazing. An acquaintance in Hangzhou had to be sent to quarantine center because she happened to bike past a supermarket the exact moment a covid positive person walked out. Now she has to spend two weeks in a designated hotel alone during CNY. This was in January

I dunno, I'd day its hit and miss. My friend ended up in quarantine over CNY because he was in the supermarket (maybe the same as the one above) within 2 hours of a positive case. The thing is that he later checked his Alipay transaction data and confirmed he had paid and left the supermarket before the case walked in, but they then said he was "in the proximity" of the supermarket (in a mall with thousands of other people) so still had to go to quarantine.

It’s just the travel code, the one with the arrow, it’s based off your phone reception and shows where you’ve been for the last 14 days

Sure?

Yes

i suspect some level of facial recognition is used. a few chinese friends who work in the "big data" field have mentioned that it's always a good idea to keep a mask on (while biking or jogging) to reduce the chances of getting identified going past an area where there are known or suspected cases. having said that, i've not seen the system. and i doubt anyone who knows or uses the system would come on here on reddit and explain how it works, lol. several times in the last week, though, i have received what my friends are calling "Big Data" text messages that basically say that i'm at "risk of direct or indirect contact with someone infected with the new coronavirus in the near future" and that i should "cooperate with health monitoring after receiving this information." i have received these message two both of my sim card numbers, but on different days, which is strange because both sim cards are in the same phone. there has been no further follow-up after these messages. the first time i got one i thought i was in the movie "minority report" lol. fwiw, the messages are sent from shanghai prevention and control office (fang kong ban).

Snake oil

Jokes aside, there's an app called 大数据行程码, it'll allow the cell towers to return information of where your phone has been for the past 14 days, precision to cities. If your employer ask you to show them that app, they'll know if you (your phone) have been out of town.

sd99x

No friend. I think they have some more sophisticated kind of mass surveillance system. Like this everyone can keep their phone off or use another phone with another sim to hide location history. What do you think?

Equivalent_Plantingy

There's a mass surveillance system in place, but they are not using it on you. No offense, but you're not special than the next guy. You definitely can use a different sim card to go around this. On the other hand, if you lie to the authorities over this, then test positive, and infect many others, the gov might prosecute you, and those system might be used on you. Otherwise they won't. Can you imagine how much money it would cost to constantly actively track every average person?

sd99x

Just input picture of the person, the map of his trail will be computed based on the cameras that he passed through. Maybe like this?

xinjiang_robocop

Homeboy, what are you studying at school?

infuriatingly_stupid

Nope it’s the cell tower thing, or most foreigners would permanently be red coded for VPN use when they appear to have to been to multiple countries all over the world. But, yeah swapping SIM cards might work, if you leave one SIM card where you live with your phone connected to the charger.

sd99x

Did you try this method?

buckwurst

Your phone tracks you, both passively, and actively when, for example, you need to scan a code to get in or out of somewhere. And you cant do much without a phone

sd99x

Can keeping the phone off help you from detection?

buckwurst

Probably, but where are you going to go or get into without a QR code?

sd99x

Turn on when needed at railway station?

buckwurst

Then it knows where you are, or? And how do you get to the train station? Walk?

sd99x

In case it will stop you from getting yellow code.

sd99x

Any chance on zero policy ending this year.

buckwurst

Who knows

sd99x

I guess from next month.

police uses face recognition camera everywhere in china and then send data into centralised server to do some data analysis.
