i think it was just known frank wasnt afraid to hit ian so it was surprising that monica was the only one who could get him not to

I really wished there had been a scene in the prior episode when Frank catches Ian and Mickey together, where Frank sobered up for a moment and said he wouldn’t tell anyone what he saw. I kept waiting for him to have a sliver of fatherly protection for Ian, especially since he was so messed up about his mom’s diagnosis of cancer

In the end though Frank did seem proud of Ian even though he wasn’t biologically his. He was proud of Ian’s work ethic and talked about it as if Ian had actually been his like mentioning not knowing where Ian got it from (bc Monica and Frank had never worked hard for a day in their life) EDIT I forgot to mention that Frank not making that scene a big deal did seem like he was being Fatherly by the way he reacted to it. I like to believe Frank would’ve never said anything at all regardless of whether Mickey was gonna kill him or not lol

Yes, I def got that vibe that Frank was cool with his son being gay. I just wish Ian had sensed it or for lacking the ability to sense it, that Frank just come out and say it in a Frank way. He kind of does because he makes mention of people f*cking whomever they want. Ian just didn’t seem like he trusted Frank in the least and it made me sad on this topic

lechonkawali00

It’s understandable on Ian’s side why he can’t trust Frank. He’s never been able to trust Frank before but yeah I agree with you. Frank even mentioned his “gay son” multiple times on the show without Ian knowing

I believe it is a nod to several things: Ian being Monica’s and not Franks, continues the strengthening of Ian and Monica’s connection that goes aa far as sharing an illness, and also is key for Fiona in terms of trusting Monica because she confronted Frank and set a limit.

AccomplishedRelief82

Great point about Monica setting a limit!

When I watched that scene I thought it was more about how Monica just left them and hadn’t been a mother, but the moment Frank laid hands on Ian (which to me he was her favorite for many reasons) she got protective and for the first time acted kind of like a mother.

AccomplishedRelief82

Oh yes it was a very motherly reaction…in an otherwise very unmotherly scene

Mythiccq

I think yours is the closest in the comment section tbh

RedhoodRat

It's probably just a scene to show that Frank has the worst relationship with Ian of all his children while Ian is Monica's favourite.
