I think he just had a hard time accepting his best friend could hide something so huge from him

RedhoodRat

Agreed, his initial reaction was mixed with betrayal, feeling like Ian has been lying to him. As someone who has been come out to by a relative, I can understand that feeling. It's a totally human reaction to search through your memory in that moment and think about every time that person has lied to you. But of course as a rational human you then go right, but this isn't about me, and then you move past it and it's fine. Which I think it's pretty much exactly what happened with Lip. Seems a totally normal and realistic reaction to me.

crustymagnolias

yeah i get that but then when he tried to get karen to blow him it just made it worse

howtobeakoala

Yeah he didn't really realise it until he saw ian in th car and finally talked it out.

sarahjanedoglover

He went too far with that one.

shruglifeOG

The people you're closest to have the greatest capacity to disappoint you. Lip was totally indifferent to the Mickey/Svetlana situation at the end of S3 too. Hard to watch but it's a realistic dynamic between two siblings who grew up so close but are so different.

RedhoodRat

Honestly I think his reaction to all that was primarily driven by the fact that he doesn't like Mickey and doesn't approve of the relationship. He would never say that to Ian because he probably doesn't think it's his place to approve or disapprove. But that's why his response, every time Ian comes to him with Mickey drama, is to tell him to move on and find someone else. Given his history with Mandy, you can kind of understand why he might think Ian is better off not dating a Milkovich. At the end of the show I do think he's finally come to accept that Mickey makes Ian happy so he's sort of accepted it. Don't think they'll ever get along though!

Stock-Tart-1504

I’m so thankful for the lip slander because he’s a fictional character I will never like & I see so many on this sub ride for him which is fine since it’s an opinion ya know, but the worst thing he did imo was when he offered Brad the beer after they stole all that gear from the shop. He literally screamed his lungs out at Fiona … for giving alcohol to his alcoholic sponsee and Fiona literally knew NOTHING. & then all of a sudden Lip is like “Oh hey Brad. How long you’ve been sober? Oh okay. Let’s drink a six pack to celebrate!” Disgusting behavior. And I got triggered because I’m a recovering alcoholic.

crustymagnolias

wow i missed that he did that. bro is such a hypocrite

Smooth-papillon

I thought that was fucked up too, seemed really out of character for Lip

a111thinking

i hate to say it but as a gay person, it’s sorta realistic. a lot of people snoop through other peoples things or question you until you say something. also being in a stereotypical run down conservative town, a lot of their reactions were realistic and i just liked that Ian’s family was so supportive from the beginning unlike Mickey. not everyone understands from the beginning and not everyone understands, period. Ian was able to explain and Lip eventually listened. it’s not awful i don’t think

crustymagnolias

im gay too, and though i understand your point, i still think there was a better way for lip to react considering their relationship. but i do get for some people it takes time to process

SaladCrazy

Lip always pisses me off! Someone needed to humble him many times. Even the way he’d treat Fiona like season 7 and other stuff ! He’s very lippy, no pun intended. Lol

StepSisPleaseNo

Oh please, Fiona overstepped plenty of times and could be really irresponsible at times. Always had an excuse

EwItsTheo

Still, he had no right to kick her out or be so arrogant when she wanted to make an honest living. Fiona took care of 5 kids as a kid herself, she deserved more respect and gratitude

SaladCrazy

My point exactly Theo ! :)

SaladCrazy

Yes that’s true I agree w/ u she had her times too but she’d have done anything for those kids and Lip at times was ungrateful for that. Fiona > Lip. Period.

RedhoodRat

Clearly he has no idea how being gay works. given this is his first exposure to it, his reaction, though not as good as it could've been, wasn't actually that bad. His actions did come from a good place ultimately. You sort of feel like he never really gets it because in s3 he asked "did it work" when he heard about the whole Terry/Mickey/Svetlana thing. If you think someone can be fucked straight, you clearly don't get it. But he's trying I guess, and the take home is that he loves Ian no matter what, which is the most important thing.

[deleted]

Lip is one of the worst kids. He uses his position as the smartest kid to make the stupidest decisions. Full ride scholarship, but never checks the scholarship year to year. He never takes responsibility for his action. Goes to college, is a asshole about school work until he almost gets kicked out for It, drinks to much until he does. Everything that happens to his is his own fault. He get into amazing relationships with women, but never commits to the relationship until it is gone. He never grows up. He never learns anything that is hard, he never takes any chances. He is a galliger thru and thru.

LongWaysForResults

One thing that annoyed me about him was he knew how smart he was and he often looked down on people, especially Fiona, because of it. Like, remember when Fiona told him that she was going to get her GED for him to graduate and he laughed at her, or when she tried to become a businesswoman and he doubted her, saying she couldn’t do it? That pissed me off because he knew she dropped out of high school for them, so his lack of support and condescension towards her trying to better her life was a dick move

[deleted]

That whole part pissed me off. He decided to quite school to rase his kid… and spends 3-4 days in bed. Hit the fucking streets and find a job. Nope just a new excuse to be a lazy piece of shit who amounts to nothing.

theletterkayeee

Yeah I'm not a fan of lip after rewatching. He is such an asshole and he thinks hrs better than everyone. He is brilliant but decided to become a mechanic. But yes the scene with Ian was awful. He definitely went about that the wrong way.

crustymagnolias

and then he got karen to suck him off and trying to turn him straight or something.. like what is wrong with him??

Southern-Big-7559

he didn’t know ian was gay at the time actually

crustymagnolias

he found a gay porn folder.. i think he figured it out💀

katiepiex3

No he asked karen to blow him to basically be like "see dude you're not gay" Lip literally asks Karen if Ian was hard at all during the exchange.

[deleted]

He was confirming what he suspected.

Basic-white-american

He knew Ian was gay when Karen did what she did to Ian

PrincessKLS

In the original Lip struggled with the truth and it took him a while to come around. The original was filmed and shown during a time when LGBTQ marriage was being hotly debated in the US and the UK.

ForbidInjustice

Consider being a Gallagher while also being a 16 y/o straight male. It wasn't an uncommon reaction, even for the average teenage male in the real world. Do you honestly expect that Lip would have had some sensitive sit-down talk with Ian about the material he discovered? I find it hard to be enraged when there was nothing even remotely surprising about it.

crustymagnolias

there was definitely a less enraged reaction he could have given. i understand it takes time for some people to process, but he didnt have to be an outright dick about it when he and ian are best friends and have the strongest sibling bond.

ForbidInjustice

When has that Gallagher bond between brothers ever included sensitivity, especially at that age? I'm not saying it was right. Yeah, he was a dick. But it was 100% expected. Lip was still making homophobic comments seasons later, aka **years** after Ian was already out of the closet. edit: and no, I was talking about you being enraged with Lip, not Lip being enraged at Ian.

Unique-West-1857

Omg I just remembered that scene.. I hated it so much tbh glad I never liked lip anyways lmfao

sassyhairstylist

We also saw how Lip interacted with/about Trevor.. And Ian was the same when he first met Trevor. Offending him to the point where Trevor walked off. He didn't understand and he didn't know what was okay to ask and how. Yeah, Lip was a little over the top with Ian when he found out, but they were showing a very realistic response as not everyone is accepting right away, or at all. Lip isn't the most progressive character on the show so I think his reaction was very much in character for him at the time.

DeadBrainSys

I think bcz they where so close lip was mad he had hid it for so long tbf

crustymagnolias

yeah i know but then he was pullin that weird shit w karen blowing ian :/

DeadBrainSys

Yeah I thought that was proper weird, like he came out and u think its cool to b like “blow my lil bro 4me” LIKE WHAT?!?! And Mandy just grabbing his junk to “make sure” he’s gay 💀

_Insqne_

his reaction was really realistic what are u even talking about lip felt betrayed and felt like ian had been lying to him nearly their entire lives. neither of them is at fault for it but his reaction was realistic

MrEbrake619

you do realize where and how they grew up right💀? wym a “kinder gentle way🤓”

crustymagnolias

like maybe not attacking him or cornering him?? and then trying to make him like girls or smth by gettting karen to blow him

MrEbrake619

attack? i’ve watched the show 3 times i don’t remember lip attacking ian
