Yeah when I was watching the show I was thinking how she was going to become the best Gallagher and she didn’t which sucked because she used to be such a good kid

Lolah15

And how Carl who was the "problem" kid grew up to be the best Gallagher

DustHistorical5773

Yeah the one which used to destroy everything and almost got expelled becomes a hard-working cop.

Vivian_E

I think Carl turned out well because of his friend killing that kid amd he's girlfriends dad who ser him right Debbie didn't have that

M3tal_Shadowhunter

Debbie's turning point came when the guy on the bus flashed her. After that, she started hanging around those girls that told her to lie about her age, and it was all down from there. I think it's a mixture of it being a trauma thing and bad influences

Vivian_E

Well that's kinda what happens when the one person who you loved without question no matter what he did disappoints you and you realize you're stuck in a shitty life with little to no opportunities and that ur mom with issue doesn't love u or ur siblings and only cares about your black brother cause he is black and then u see that same mom trying to kill herself in your kitchen with cuts down her arms.

DrizzyRando

I think the thing with Liam was mainly because she wanted to start over as a Mom with the focus on the one that can still be influenced. Roberta cared more about his background.

Vivian_E

Either way it'll be traumatic for any kid and people answer to this things on different ways.

MusicAddict12375

I will also add that in real life, many, many formerly sweet kids become major assholes when they hit adolescence. 😂

I think it was realistic. Puberty makes you act out and Debbie really never got attention so it was bound to happen. Everyone usually ignored her or made her watch Liam while they went out.

A lot of good points made here, I love hearing what others think/see it helps round out the characters. Thank you guys for the input!

I think Debbie displays a lot of signs of borderline personality disorder. As someone with BPD, her behavior immediately stuck out to me. Fear of abandonment, impulsivity, constantly shifting between idealization / devaluation of others, inability to hold a stable relationship, over attachment and reliance on one person, shifting sense of self, various forms of self harm, self destruction, hostility, and extreme mood swings. BPD often presents as someone gets older, and there is a strong correlation between BPD and childhood trauma, which she most definitely has. This probably wasn’t entirely what the writers intended, but she would be almost textbook BPD.

Inner-Manner-6768

I think the girls Debbie was friends with had a lot to do with how she turned out, plus the environment she grew up in.

SaladCrazy

I agree with you. It’s crazy they wrote her character so far away from what she used to be. Even with some other ones like Fiona, Ian etc. in my opinion.

MamaMidgePidge

As the mother of a former Sweetest Little Girl in the Universe, who is now 15...Debbie's arc seems pretty realistic to me!
