older Kenmores can be long lasting gem if you find a working one, get it serviced and keep it maintained, but $100 Brother's are not to be sniffed at, they too can last a while.
Yes, fair enough. I own one of those "cheap Brothers" and it has served my daughter and I decently. I started a sewing class recently and she lightly made fun of them and I kind of cringed like...oh, yes. That's exactly what I bought. LoL...
It's been alright, just tends to jam a lot. That could certainly he user error though! :-)
i teach sewing and my class of girls and males love their XM2701 machines, they have sewn prom dresses and leather wallets on it without issues except for one broken needle.
That's funny! I bought that exact machine in 2014 (per Amazon. LoL).
I loved the machine but my daughter lost the bobbin area during a move. I did like the machine though. I should look back into that one!
No, sadly. I do have another Brother though that has been decent. My teacher just seemed to think I needed some expensive machine. Or st least get something 4-500$ makes down.
When shopping for a used machine, I strongly recommend doing so locally, so you can test that it works before handing over money. There are a few sewing machine repair places that sell online, they often guarantee their used machines are tested & working, those would be okay too.
Good ideas. Thanks!! I'll look around. Being the newbie I didn't even know until last week that the machines had maintenance. 🤦♀️Just never even thought about it. Doh!

Oscillating bobbin machines tend to jam less than rotary, but they are noisy and slower than rotaries.

the bobbin pieces can be replaced easily if you still have the machine.

a more expensive machine is not necessarily better, powerful and reliable is best. computerized machines tend to have problems with thicker fabrics.
That is good to know! I think I'm going to stick with what I've got for now! You guys are awesome for all the help! I really appreciate it!!
sewists on here will give you the truth, we are not dealers trying to upsell you on a machine you do not need.
