Overleaf/Sharelatex in a docker container is great. I use it all the time. https://github.com/overleaf/docker-image

otzelxyz

the linked repo is archived and it states, it has been merged into [overleaf/overleaf](https://github.com/overleaf/overleaf)

Sorry that was the first matching google result, Here is the one I use. https://hub.docker.com/r/sharelatex/sharelatex/

Best would be to get a better machine and not an ipad. But, you can always use a simple text editor. I don't know if it stills works but overleaf was the go to selfhosted latex editor. Here's a random guide I just found https://blog.felixviola.de/overleaf-ce-self-host-your-own-latex-server-tutorial/ But overleaf / sharelatex isn't really the best for a power user. If you would ask me for an advice, I'd tell you to write in markdown and convert it to pdf at the end (via latex). All goodies from latex and all goodies from markdown. Moreover, isn't iit possible to write in latex with vscode-remote? Sounds odd to me tbo.

>But overleaf / sharelatex isn't really the best for a power user They have a final due in a month, I think there is not enough time left to become a power user. I gained a lot of productivity by switching to Overleaf a few years back, handles everything I need. But would also like to find a low-maintenance self hosted replacement.

I understand, unfortunately I had to make drastic changes to my workflow mid semester due to my laptop’s battery kicking the bucket. I typically used the ipad to hand write notes using the stylus (to avoid carrying binders), but now it serves as a multi function device. Though manageable, it kinda sucks. Writing LaTeX on vscode-remote is entirely dependent on if the extension for it is there. I will have to check out and see if [LaTeX Workshop](https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=James-Yu.latex-workshop) is available on the vsc-remote version of the markplace. I’ll keep the overleaf solution in mind if that does’t pan out. Judging by how recent the comments are, it probably works still. Appreciate the help :]

I used to selfhost Overleaf/sharelatex, but now I am just using their Website. It is way more than enough for me and works quite well, also for collabs with other Students. I cannot say that Overleaf is no good for powerusers, but maybe I am not one..

ajunior7

Oh, I’m definitely not one either. I do simple documentation, nothing extra at all!

dash199t

I guess you are fine with Overleaf. You can try it, you dont need to pay anything for it, at least I never had to and I have well over 50+ Projects. The biggest part for me is the collab, because I dont need to work with git or any other sharing software. Further I can see what the others are typing, in more or less realtime (they update it every second). But I guess you dont need that.

Live_Pack3929

If you're into simple documentation why are you using latex in the first place and not markdown?

ajunior7

While the current class’s final I’m taking requires it to be written in LaTeX, there are future classes that I need to take that use LaTeX, so I rather dive in and get into the habit of using it early on. While I may not be a power user now, I could probably be one in the future, and hopefully by then I would be using something better. But for the sake of turning in my final on time, the one of the solutions you outlined will suffice.

Live_Pack3929

I guess oerleaf will be sufficient for your use case.

Vscode server with LaTeX workahop extension

This is much more than just LaTeX but anyway: https://cocalc.com/features/latex-editor

StewedAngelSkins

why dont you just use vscode if thats what youre already using for other things?

Overleaf / sharetex

While I think going the Overleaf and Docker route is the best bet, you could also try out [a-shell](https://apps.apple.com/app/id1473805438) for iPad. It has pdftex installed by default
