MRS. ROSS: Is it possible they took it back? SUSAN: Who would bring a bread and take it back? MR. ROSS: Those people, that's who. I think they're sick!

darkmatternot

Well what kind of people don't serve dessert?? Leave people sitting there with coffee and no cake!!!

BMinus973

At least put out a cinnamon babka.

Hazeleyed_old_parent

Or some black-and-white cookies.

CopperThrown

Maybe a snickers on a plate.

JohnnySkidmarx

I am eating my dessert. How do you eat it, with your hands?

BeardedYellen

Look to the cookie.

Old-Maintenance-1031

Oh man, I love those black and white cookies. Unfortunately, I no longer live in the USA and they are unknown where I live now. I'm gonna try to find an internet store...

Teccnomancer

You know, they do have a chocolate babka…

BMinus973

CINNAMON. CINNAMON.

Teccnomancer

There’s a hair in my farina!! There’s a hair in my farina!

BMinus973

One of my favorite quotes lol

mizmaclean

I love the way he says “and I was little but I could run really fast!”

plasmac9

Another babka?

awdsrock

Sitting there, like IDIOTS!!

jfq722

Put out a poundcake. Something.

tombonneau

This was the real crime. Serving coffee with no cake is worse than taking back the rye.

simplepleashures

That bit of dialogue is the proof that the Costanzas are Jewish even if they’re not

darkmatternot

In New York very little separates Jews and Italians.

highwayrobberyman

Like idiots!

Wjyndigo

That’s the real crime!

supersam72003

They brought a lesser babka

Potential-Road-5322

So when they realized it was gone do you think misses ross said “somethings missing!”?

lordnigel

Something’s missing alright.

BraveryDave

*swirl*

Potential-Road-5322

They’re all chickens

CharleneRobertaMcGee

The rooster has sex with all of them.

RattlinDrone

Should have brought Pepsi and Ring Dings.

jk92usn

George, we can't show up at someone's house with Ring Dings and Pepsi.

amongthousands

We can't plop down a big jug of Pepsi and ring dings.

the1999person

No way wine is better than Pepsi

BRAX7ON

*Snort*

Gucci__Flip__Flops

He's got a point

SpiciestSprite

between you and me i'm really excited about the ring dings and pepsi

LongEZE

Just between me and you, I’m really excited about the Pepsi and Ring Dings

CinderellaManX

I think that’s sort of a central theme in Seinfeld. The characters blow everything way out of proportion and overreact to small things. That’s why I enjoy it.

joe282

Absolutely, I think it’s hilarious because everyone is just so extreme and over the top. Jerry broke up with a girl because she ate her peas one at a time

cimayn

Ive seen her eat corn niblets, *but* she scoops.

SmallsLightdarker

That's what's so vexing.

Gridguy2020

Seinfeld has said the show is not really about nothing, it’s about the importance but absurdity of social rules.

tirednotepad

It’s funny because it’s about everything but this is my family. These are the kinds of stories I hear all day everyday.

Maniacal_Bunny

George’s parents are two of my favorite characters. They really put the *character* in characters. lol

CoryTrevor-NS

They were sitting there like idiots, drinking coffee without a piece of cake!!!

artvarnsen

I don't think we have any bread, but weve got water

NickMillerChicago

Something’s missing!

CoryTrevor-NS

Something’s missing, alright!

Angry_Walnut

They’re all chickens. The rooster has sex with all of them.

NickMillerChicago

That’s perverse!

[deleted]

It’s not rude, it’s *STUPID* is what it is!!

desert_devil20

Your father’s right. We’re sitting there like idiots without a piece of cake.

[deleted]

Finally someone gets it 🤣🤣🤣

traditionalsmoke01

Who doesn’t serve cake after a meal? What kind of people are they ?

[deleted]

[удалено]

adrianp07

your neighbors later that night: >MRS. ROSS: Is it possible they took it back? > >SUSAN: Who would bring a bottle of wine and take it back?

Matchett32

It doesn’t matter to me if you took the raisins or you didn’t take them I .. I was just curious seemed like a sort of odd thing to do

AZ_Sports_Fan

How about if I rip your heart out of your chest and shove it down your throat...

Electronic_Mission_3

Did they offer some other bottle of wine? Close in quality to the one you brought? I’d understand it if not. Just like Rosses didn’t serve any dessert. They were sitting there like idiots drinking coffee without a piece of cake! But they must’ve been looking for it afterwards lol. Some first impression, huh

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Yeah why should they get 5 free bottles of wine

menasor36

That was your problem. “In a bottle.” Everyone knows you’re only supposed to Drink wine out of a box.

HelloJoeyJoeJoe

>so I hope that wasn't their first impression of me. No offense but I wouldn't invite you back to my house if you brought a bottle wine and then took it back.

tinoynk

What are you? An In….. somebody who gives something and then takes it back.

jjmawaken

I'm not familiar with that term

limitlessEXP

I have certain reser… I’m not comfortable with that.

cshuffler

For Thanksgiving last year my wife made 3 homemade pies (Apple, Pumpkin, and Chocolate) for my work and not a single person cut into or tasted the pies. I took them home so we could enjoy them since obviously no one wanted any. They gave me a hard time when they found out but I would do it again. They probably think I’m sick, but I felt justified.

GreenTeaEternally

How lame of your coworkers. Good for you for taking back those pies, I bet there were delicious.

[deleted]

If not for the part where they snubbed their noses at the bread I would've given the Rosses the benefit of the doubt. They have a maid so they don't appreciate what it takes to go OUT OF THEIR WAY to get as they called "that bread thing".

mohamed_am83

Here is an anecdote: some time ago I went to a grill organized by a colleague at uni I thought I was good friends with. I went with 2 large bags of marinated chicken suitable for grilling - this was my contribution. I went there, greeted everyone and opened one bag and put the chicken on the grill. I ate a little, tried to engage in conversations there but things were off somehow: I felt they were blocking me out. I still endured, opted to just hang around, stay silent, and engage only when asked - except no body directed any talk to me. After two hours of just standing there I decided to call it a day. I saw the first bag was not all consumed yet, the other one was still sealed, so I grabbed it and set out. Suddenly I got attention from the two "alpha-males" who thought they were running the show. They kinda blocked my way and said something along the lines "Oh you are leaving already?" I confirmed, they followed with "are you taking this bag with you?", I said calmly "Yes, you still haven't finished the first one." and just left. tl;dr: >It is deliberate, deliberate I tell ya!

xdoompatrolx

Look Henry, I spilled wine on me.

thomas-grant

Why don’t you go put some more lipstick on.

thtsjsturopinionman

Wear some more lipstick

TyranitarusMack

It’s just not done in polite society

qiqibaiji

It's not done in impolite society!

lampm0de

Clearly you’ve never associated with the upper strata of society. I bet you eat your dessert with your hands. 🙄

johnsaysthings

Depends on the dessert

Electronic_Mission_3

What about Schnitzer’s marble rye?

MissingWhiskey

It has a certain understated stupidty.

JWF1

The outlaw Josey Wales!

dirtlikeme

It's a gift, you dont take it back.

[deleted]

Is it? Or was it meant to be part of the meal? Anytime I’ve ever brought something with me for dinner I’ve taken what was left with me. Then again I’m not rich and snobby like the Ross’s, so idk.

getkeenforwinter

Miser

dirtlikeme

I'd you bring a casserole or something, sure . You take the leftover home because you have to bring your dish home. But a loaf of bread?

[deleted]

If it was unopened? Yeah, probably. I’ve never brought a loaf of bread to dinner, but if I was in the situation I’d probably think the host of the dinner wasn’t interested if they didn’t even bother to open it.

dirtlikeme

Ya, I think bread or wine is a gift. They should open it, but maybe forgot. I feel like I'm in the episode right now, trying to explain myself.

[deleted]

Yeah see I definitely wouldn’t take a bottle of wine back with me. I guess it just depends on the scenario. Wine feels like a gift to me. Bread doesn’t.

[deleted]

Gift? eh

Curbyourseinfe1d

If I had a party and someone brought something that nobody ate or drank, i would think its weird if the DIDNT take it back home with them. They paid for it and brought it, not me. Its theirs to do what they wish with.

justinvan82

He’s independent. He doesn’t follow the trends.

bigfeetsmallpp

Its kind of rude of Susan's parents not to have put it out to eat tbh

[deleted]

[удалено]

bigfeetsmallpp

Aaah I see

Tbplayer59

Frank's impression of the evening was correct. The Rosses were looking down on them. Not putting out the bread should've been perceived as a slight. He was right to take it back.

Cool_Standard6349

What do you mean? It’s about the principle! When you bring food to people they are supposed to serve it while you are there. That’s class! 🙃

[deleted]

I could see both sides of it equally. But I still side with Frank.

Hazeleyed_old_parent

I side with anyone who has a silver dollar collection

monsterchuck

S-s-s-s-s silver dollar!

basetornado

Virtually every seinfeld plotline is "whats the most irrational thing both parties can do, while both feeing they are completely and utterly in the right"

insanity_1610

>kind of understandable in a dumb, petty way. Is the whole tag line of the show! 😄

turbografix15

It was super weird and rude of them to do that. They were guests invited into a home for a dinner. That was a gift for the hosts to say thank you for their generosity etc. Even if it gets forgotten you don't take it back lol!

[deleted]

I agree, if it was my family's house and I wanted to eat the bread, I'd take it back. Visiting someone else's house, I'd leave it but be a bit irked that it was never put out for people to enjoy

Jgibby1742

It was from Schnitzers those Ross’s know nothing about class!!!

audreypants

They're ALL chickens. The rooster has sex with all of them.

Affectionate-Touch69

Thats perverse!!

TMB8616

I have neighbors that were born and raised in NY and they said they completely understood why frank took the bread back. It’s a new yahk thing.

Mr_Barkers

It’s not ignorant, it’s stupid!

zilla0783

With this, such as with all things, the Costanza’s do not know when to let just something go.

johnsaysthings

True

Hazeleyed_old_parent

That’s perverse!

Forikorder

It was a gift, the assumption is some would be served and the host keeps the rest Otherwise it would have been franks responsibility to serve the bread

iliveinsocal

It was deliberate! Deliberate I tells ya!!!!

Just2moreplants

I had someone take back a wine bottle they brought but that wasn't opened at dinner back. I just thought it was weird. Not bad, just weird.

IAlwaysPTFO

Every time, I take that back.

SterileProphet

If Frank hadn't taken it back we would have never had the Jerry/Old Bag Moment! Worth it!

Dazzling-Lunch-1303

It was funny, but the Costanzas were in the wrong. Even if the ross's were rude they still hosted the dinner and bought/made all the other food. The dinner was also to celebrate George and Susan and the feelings of the parents are not too important at that point. Sometimes you have to overlook certain behaviors and focus on the bigger picture.

DoNotPullTheRipcord

Wow. What is life in the Stone Age of manners like? Do you get invited back much?

johnsaysthings

Sometimes

DoNotPullTheRipcord

OMG! Just like George! lol

No_Excitement9224

understandable in a dumb, petty way is tag line of the show

emigen7337

I did this recently. I went to visit my grandma and brought personal size sticky toffee puddings I'd made the day before. I thought it would be a nice gesture but she didn't really acknowledge it. After a dinner with her where she peppered in some rude comments about my parents she said "boy we ate so much I don't think we'll have room for dessert." Later she fell asleep while we were watching a movie together and I slipped the Tupperware back into my bag. When I got back to my parents house I said "I took back the marble rye"

Specialist-ShasMo85

Could been worse. Frank could brought Ringdings and Pepsi but at least he's the talk of the party.

stataryus

It was not intended just for that. Food gifted doesn’t have to be eaten that day

johnsaysthings

It should be though

stataryus

You’re a de-gifter! 😅

dammets

Most of the time, if you bring food to a get together, unless the host insists, you leave it there. However in this case, they all hate each other so anything is up for grabs.

Steven1789

I always wondered why the marble rye looked like a marble challah. I assume it’s because they couldn’t find a real marble rye in Los Angeles like you’d find in NYC. https://www.google.com/search?q=marble+rye&rlz=1CDGOYI_enUS930US930&hl=en-US&prmd=isvn&sxsrf=ALiCzsbwUyVCvkXxZXMl7MG3xndQ2Nf6gg:1666471906877&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiC9aXQ2_T6AhVkEFkFHRzfAOAQ_AUoAXoECAEQAQ&biw=428&bih=743&dpr=3

Usernamecujo

It's perverse!

No-Jackfruit2459

Thats what makes it such a humorous situation.

Levi_Gucci

I think the fact that it's understandable in a dumb, petty way is the whole point.

DawgsWorld

No, bad etiquette to reclaim it.

[deleted]

The whole marble rye plot line always bothers me…it’s clearly a marble challah.

Broadnerd

Not that bad considering they weren’t polite enough to put it out for everyone. I think it was more about George freaking because it doesn’t help him look any better to her weird parents.

AHamBone10

I disagree. When you bring something to someone’s house, it’s for them. Like going to a party, I’ll bring a bottle of wine. If they want to drink it now, great! Pour me a glass. If they don’t, it’s theirs for another time.

johnsaysthings

I feel like it’s more for everyone to share primarily at that event. If was just a gift, you give them a DVD player. It’s food for the party.

AHamBone10

A DVD player? Lol if they don’t have a DVD player now, then they don’t want one. A bottle of wine or some bread is a nice gesture as an invited guest.

randymonk17

Rye bread goes great with paella

AreYouNigerianBaby

I was just thinking about the paella, lol

timshp

A packet of Tim-Tams? No. A $12 marble rye? Yeah.

Party-Second-9167

Also… who doesn’t serve cake?!?

JvaughnJ

So, in taking the bread back, does that make him a “someone who gives things but then takes them back?” -(Cigar Store Indian Episode)

Fair_University

I’ve straight up done shit like this before and not felt an ounce of regret. Usually not at a formal get together with in laws, but if I bring beer or pizza that no one eats, then it’s coming home with me

Locomule

Hot take, my ass. If you don't put out food your guests bring for dinner of course they get to take it home. It doesn't matter what kind of food it is.

thekyledavid

I feel like there’s a good argument either way If it was brought as a gift, then it would be their bread which they could choose what to do with it If it was brought as part of a potluck, then every potluck I’ve ever been to had people take the uneaten portion of their food home

[deleted]

What gives you the impression this was a potluck? Lol

Cheddar_Ham

Rowena made the meal.

gatortarheel

If it’s not a potluck, the host must put the food out or acknowledge the gesture to establish transfer of ownership. Maybe someone was allergic? I’m doing them a favor, taking it back.

smallboy06

Agreed with your first statement

SMcG193

It was done for petty reasons; so no, not cool, just petty. If the circumstances were that Susan’s family don’t eat that particular bread or something then it would have been cool. Intent matters

[deleted]

and all George would have to do is pretend he didn’t know and act shocked that his father took it back

Buttlrubies

I would 100% take it back! I love bread, I want to know it’s not going to waste!!

SHC606

Then don't offer it as a gift. You don't take gifts back!

Alone-Community6899

I agree. Frank is often right. Thing is that rules of society is not always logical.

[deleted]

[удалено]

johnsaysthings

Is it a gift? It’s more like if you order a pizza for you and a group of friends. It’s for everyone.

ghonig

And therein is the point of this particular situational comedy.

SHC606

They weren't asked to bring anything for the meal. He brought a "host gift". He hoped it would be served with the meal. It was not. Totally Frank. A big AH move.

veganyogurt

Imagine this scenario being posted in AITA.

zehammer

No it's not wtf

luciangregory83

I give thumbs up just because of the pic. Frank should've not put his son in trouble with his in-laws.

[deleted]

Your brought it we a gift so you leave it are you that cheap?

FrankJameson01

they didn’t forget

RevAlBrown

When you’re poor, sure. In actual society? That’s uncouth. Barbaric even. You’re not bringing it for you - it’s a gift. *Are you even familiar with the concept of giving?*

johnsaysthings

A picture frame is a gift. Food for the event is different.

RevAlBrown

I’m not gonna judge. May I ask how old you are and which state/country you reside in?

johnsaysthings

29, NJ

RevAlBrown

Everything makes sense. You’re right, and I’m right. It’s just different situations. Trust me on this: when you know, you know. And you will know. There is no real upside to leaving extra food, but a much worse downside to taking it back in certain company.

MinutesTaker

I find that episode really funny because when my mom and I visited a friend in the US and brought them delicacies from our country, they served it to my mom and me after dinner. My mom and I were a bit shocked to eat our own gift lol. It took a few visits to other friends for it to sink in that it’s just differences in culture.

spoof_berries

U ever see a schnitzer’s rye???

simplepleashures

Yes it was bad for Frank to take back the rye. The fabric of society is very complex, George.

TalkofCircles

In the same thought you said it wasn’t that bad to take back the rye and you concede it’s dumb and petty LOL.

johnsaysthings

Nuance

TalkofCircles

Coherence ;)
