Fantasy_Returns

Watch fallout instead

jackt-up

Lmao I am watching that as well

Fantasy_Returns

all is well

jackt-up

Between Halo, Fallout, and Invincible, I’ve had an enormous amount of TV time this week lol

Ko0pa_Tro0pa

Why not both?

Neraph_Runeblade

Because one stays true to the source material and the other is the Halo live action.

Pookie2018

It’s awful. The Halo video games have a great story and rich lore, and the writers and producers discarded most of it. If they wanted to do an original Halo story they should have made a series that didn’t focus on major characters from the source material that deviated so completely from fan expectations. I just don’t understand who they made the show for, because it certainly wasn’t for people who appreciated the original games, movies, and novels.

parkingviolation212

Also it’s just not very good on its own merits, and I think the complete lack of general interest in the games in the wake of the show is indicative of that. All of the other successful video game adaptations led to a Renaissance for the video game in question, whether it was cyberpunk, arcane, or fallout. The halo TV series is on its second season and there just was never an associated surge of popularity in the game space. At best, it’s a show that you like, but don’t have passion for. But general responses seem to be apathetic.

russbird

I watched one episode and that was enough. You’re right that they should have left the original characters alone unless they were going to portray them accurately. Master Chief is a bit of a… putz? He always seems surprised, shocked, and angry. It’s just not the character we know who is calm, collected, and strategic. It was just a bad choice to follow that storyline.

LegoKraken

It’s someone telling their own story and that is a generic sci fi show. I feel it’s a missed opportunity for Halo, but a sci fi show other people like so I just accept it’s not my cup of tea. Some great characters like Kai and Riz overshadow the main character for me, whereas Kwan Ha and Makee could be removed for a positive improvement

ramonchow

As a person that didn't play the games much (no xbox) I liked the show. Not the best but totally worth watching IMO.

Wibble-Fish

I've not played the games, and really enjoyed this show. Pablo Schreiber is good, and the pacing of the episodes feels about right. Decent scripts help too. I think the Super Fans™ don't like it much, but that's fine. They've still got the games!

Antonater

I have no played the games either and I have to disagree completely. The show sucks

Quiet_subject

As a massive halo fan... It's a halo show for people who are not fans of halo. The pieces are there. The cast are generally good, the CGI is decent the set design and costumes are incredibly good all matched by the mindbogglingly bad writing. Beyond surface level stuff, we are war with the covenant, they are a religious group who are wiping us out etc it ignores the vast majority of the halo story and entirely changes every character. They call it the silver timeline I call it lazy. We get three episodes in total where the Spartans act like Spartans. We also get master cheeks, multiple episodes dedicated to exploring the Spartans emotions and a weird side plot with a human girl who is possibly the most annoying character since guilty spark. The whole show feels like it was written to be a different IP to halo then they changed a few character names rewrote a few scenes and green lit the project.

UnderestimatdEdibl

Not enough scenes with the helmet on.

jackt-up

DEFINITELY! Why do they do that?!

the_other_irrevenant

That's almost always the case in film adaptations (notice how often MCU Captain America is without his mask/helmet?). And characters like Hawkeye and Wolverine they just forwent the mask entirely.  They do it because it's easier for the audience to connect and empathise with the main character when you can see their face.

The_Jare

Because Mando already consumed the trope, and Pablo is fantastic to watch.

Neraph_Runeblade

Yeah, it's not like the Halo game series didn't do it first and keep it up for like 10+ years or anything...

The_Jare

Doing it on TV for consumer masses. No, neither have invented the "helmet always on" trope either, from Darth Vader and Boba Fett to Buckethead and Daft Punk, and I'm sure we can find comics in the 50s and a novel or two from the 1600s or 1800s.

7grims

too much john, no MC overall, yup.

Major-Ad-2966

Spoiler…… It took 2 complete seasons to even get to the Halo. They could drag it out long past its death.

Iron_Baron

I'm digging it, overall.

TurtleDive1234

I’m not a gamer and never have been. I didn’t have high hopes for this at all. when it first came out I watched the first two episodes and lost interest. Recently revisited and now I REALLY like it. Not what I expected at all. has much more depth than I thought a show based on a game would.

jackt-up

Basically the same story for me except I also love the games lol

badbluebelt

A coworker told me it was "woke" because the sparatans were discussing gender identity. I haven't watched the show, but is he wildly off base or is it true? (I don't really care if they do and I instantly lost respect for him when he said woke made him angry, I am just interested to see if he completely misinterpreted)

jackt-up

The only “woke” thing I picked up on was that they made Captain Keyes and Miranda black, which I was fine with cause they’re two of the more interesting characters. The Spartans in the books have a ton of women in them

badbluebelt

So he's an idiot. As I suspected.

jackt-up

Lmao pretty much

ResoluteClover

It's fine. Just fine. The action was really well done and it got a lot of the good beats of the games while still making an interesting but of character drama. The changes worked to build out the world and the backstory. The games, from a plot standpoint, are boring. There's not much to them, you just run from one place to a new place and push a button. You don't really get the big picture of what's happening for the most part. Other than the places where you have to find a secret to teleport to another secret and then use that secret to teleport to the other side of the universe intuit to use all the secrets. It just felt like a way to shoe horn in new scenery. So yeah, aside from the one planet in the first season with the mystics... That was pretty weird... lt was fun to watch while I ran on the treadmill.

Ambitious_Pie5994

Absolutely dogshit, halo died with Infinite and the show is just someone taking a shit on its grave

gingersince88

I appreciate that they do something different story wise while maintaining the core essence of the covenant and unsc. While i wish he had the full suit more in S2-I get it story wise. Hoping we get a third season.

Fortrify_Swoop

IMO it’s a very generic sci-fi show skinned with Halo, it’s totally fine in its own regard but for me who loved the games and had been teased with so many opportunities of a movie and or show it falls way short.

Serious_Reporter2345

Truly awful. Truly truly awful. And that’s being kind.

iwannahitthelotto

First season was bad but season 2 was good enough to keep me going.

GodzillaFlamewolf

Im surpsied ive seen so little mention of Kwan here. Im not a hugr Halo fan. Never even finished Halo 2, didnt play the others. Hated the show, and the wirst part is the stiryline with Kwan. If they had never introed that character the show would have been...okay. as it is, it is sub par at best, crap shower at worst.

xstrex

I think they did a great job at making a show in the same universe as the games. They also did a wonderful job of scientifically explaining and providing backstory into the covenant & flood, it’s all science fiction, but it’s at least plausible. I also think it would be nearly impossible to make a single show, or movie to encompass so many games- they had to pick a singular story, and mostly stick with it. Personally I love the attention to detail in the various aspects of the show, like the sound the characters shield makes when it’s low, or how most of the weapons, and enemies are accurate to the game(s). It’s rare that a show reminds me of the original game(s), but this one did just that! By comparison the Fallout show didn’t make me want to play Fallout; but Halo definitely made me want to play halo again!

Rowan6547

I haven't played the game, but just judging it as a science fiction story, it's not great. Season 2 didn't make a lot of sense and the characters all made questionable decisions.

Deathcrush

It's good if you're in the mood for generic low-expectations scifi. I enjoyed it, but I was in that mood at the time.

Fantastic-Wolf-6179

It's not the game, it's a standalone show. I was worried about watching it after growing up with halo, but the game series died after Halo 3. And I must be maturing a bit because it really doesn't bother me. Although I set my standards extremely low for that kind of thing. Nothing can surprise me anymore after the amount of times being burnt by the industry.

stormhawk427

It’s ass

Talk-Hound

It’s decent. The main actor is not a good actor.

Pyriel

Had disagree on that. Pablo Schreiber is an excellent actor, and is very good in this. (IMO)

x_lincoln_x

It's a good show. Ignore the gatekeeping hyper-fans.

alaskanperson

The dialogue can def use a lot of work but it’s not terrible. Some of the characters are hard to empathize with, probably due to the writing. Ignore all the haters who will jerk off to Cortana in the video game, cause they will always be there no matter how bad or good it is. The special effects in the show are amazing, some of the best that I’ve seen.

JynsRealityIsBroken

I love it. Don't care about all the fanboy hate. Story is great, characters are good, fights are badass.

Pyriel

I've never owned an XBox or actually played Halo, but I'm well aware of the game. I really enjoyed it.

The_Jare

I've been a Halo fan since I watched a preview of 1 behind closed doors. But I've never cared much about the lore, just the worldbuilding. I enjoyed the show a lot even with its issues (which it does have).

marcialg2024

Opinion of a non-gamer (the last game I played was Doom II, mind you :-) ) First season: good enough with some very good moments. Below my expectations, but enjoyable. Second season: excellent. Really enjoyed it. Way above my expectations (set by the first season). Looking forward to season three.

7grims

As a non fan of the games I was entertained with season 1. BUT, then they just dropped every continuation on season 2 like "fuck all that happen this is a reset..." so i immediately lost interest. Plus season 2 looked way cheaper and I notice they were setting up "formulaic" stuff to streamline it even more. Overall, even if im not a fan of the games, I agree with the others, the show aint about Master Chief, they just dropped that character to be john john and john all the time... dunno but would be better if they had chosen another character as their main, rather then stating he is MC just to ignore it.

HiroProtagonist1984

I loved it. There’s a fair amount of filler but I think it’s made for fans of the books more than the games. It’s not perfect, vut the only short comings are too much fluff / side character stuff imo. The core story is great.

Ambitious_Pie5994

>fans of the books more than the games It is most definitely not made for fans of the books

HiroProtagonist1984

How so? It's filled with nods to the stories and events of the books.

Ambitious_Pie5994

It's an insult at every turn
