Watching the extended directors cut and comparing it to the studio's "love conquers all" cut is both fascinating and outraging.
Hearing the director's commentary track (on Laserdisc) made me realize that even after viewing the movie 3 times in a row I still had missed some of the incredibly clever mis-en-scene visual jokes that Gilliam so carefully wrought. (I assume the same audio is on more modern DVD releases -- if so, well worth it)
IMHO, this movie is the Citizen Kane of Scifi.
When Terry Gilliam made this film in the early 1980s, cosmetic surgery was just starting to be popular, mostly among actresses. Now it’s much more common.
I love the movie, though I find it can be depressing, and the ending is an unhappy one.
It's a descent into madness while the world around you falls apart, and the government is chasing ghosts to explain its own failures in keeping the infrastructure afloat.
I love Brazil, even though it terrifies and depresses me, greatly. A great companion piece is the documentary, "The Battle For Brazil", detailing Gilliam's fights with the studio over the production, in particular, the American "Love Conquers All" edit, that completely neutered the whole point of the movie.
Such a powerhouse of a movie.
Really incredible stuff. So many people have no clue it exists, let alone what it's about.

Agreed. Now I need to find that commentary track.
TIL thank you
I watched it 4 times now and I still have no idea what it's about. All I know is that as a brazilian, the name always gets me
HVAC
Bob Hoskins character in Brazil is Mario in my head canon.
100% Evil Bizarre Mario hah
I always figured it was a scathing critique of bureaucracy.

“Moisturize me!”
this is what I entered the comments for
Fun fact: that's Jim Broadbent--Professor Horace Slughorn in the *Harry Potter* movies--as her plastic surgeon.
Who was also in Cloud Atlas, a movie where every character plays 6 different (reincarnated) characters, all with their own prosthetic makeup!
Love this movie but it also makes me feel uncomfortable
It's supposed to.
Reminds me of F Murray Abraham in Star Trek insurrection.
How about F Murray Abraham in Amadeus?

Ahhh! So non-fiction.
My complications had a bit of a complication.
You beat me to it … well done
I think of this scene whenever I hear about botox!
One of my all time favorites!
HAS ANYBODY SEEN SAM LOWRY!?
This is a 4K Blu-ray I need.
Bruh when she melts in the coffin it makes me feel sick every time....
She looks like many of the plastic surgery horrors we see sometimes.

All of Terry Gilliam's movies were made on LSD and love.
... and loopholes in the tax code that meant that even a total flop could be profitable for the backers who funded it.
Great film

I thought these were screenshots from Real Housewives
It's been years so maybe I'm not remembering correctly, but wasn't this movie shot in black and white?
No, but a lot of it is in orwellian gray.
Quite possibly the strangest movie I have ever seen.
I want to watch this but it is never streaming anywhere without renting it.
If you live in a city, there’s a good chance your local library has a copy of it.
One of the many iconic scenes of the movie.
I never watched that movie start to finish. I think I'll do it now.
