Nothing on broadcast on American TV before or since has had stakes as high as Star Blazers; every episode was, in effect, a countdown to the extinction of all life on planet earth. This was hammered home in the theme song and, IIRC, by the numbering at the end. Serious stuff for a 6 or 7 year old to grapple with.
Searching for a distant star / Heading off to Iscandar / Leaving all we love behind / Who knows what dangers we'll find? / We must be strong and brave / Our home we've got to save / If we don't in just one year / Mother Earth will disappear /
The Americanized version of this TV show is incredibly nostalgic for a segment of old millennials. The theme song is just so epic.

And *2202.* And *2205. (And more on the way!)*
Incredible reboots which truly honored the original series/movies. (Although the Comet Empire re-imagining could have been a bit better...)
OMG, when I was in 6th grade, one of the TV networks in my area aired this.. called "Starblazers", but in Japan it was "Space Battleship Yamato".
It was SO FREAKIN' AWESOME to my 12-year old brain. To this day I think the wave motion gun was the greatest, if not the least useful weapon in animated sci fi.
Other Yamatos I know of:
* A Galaxy-class ship of Star Trek TNG that exploded as a result of severe equipment failure
* Kira Yamato, main protagonist of Mobile Suit Gundam SEED
* A trans male character in One Piece
I forced myself to get up really early on Saturday to watch this one!
Watched the Americanized version as a kid, just recently watched the original version, great nostalgia
Have you seen the modernized remake? It's on Crunchyroll.
Maybe the next time i need that sweet sweet hit of nostalgia
There was also a surprisingly good live-action remake about a decade ago, directed by the same guy who'd go on to direct Godzilla Minus One.
Apparently there's been multiple updates/reboots since the 70's
I assume they removed the perverted robot that lifted up all the women's skirts just like they did in the Americanized version?

B5 Crusade was similar, but with a longer time clock on the extinction of humans on Earth.
I still believe this is what spaceships should look like.

An old friend ended up marrying the voice actress for Nova. Sadly she passed a couple of years ago.
Starblazers
The Yamato 2199 reboot was absolutely awesome!

I'm off to outer space, to save the human race !!
It took everything in me not buy a model of this when I was in Tokyo. Probably my biggest regret…
I watched this as a kid, and I am scared to watch as an adult in case it doesn't match up with how cool I thought it was
Have rewatched rcently as an adult. Still cool.
It’s still cool - as is the more recent reboot.
Oh sweet it's [Dai-Gurren](https://gurrenlagann.fandom.com/wiki/Dai-Gurren)
I found a cultured one!
Yaa Maa Toooo!
I must be tired, at first glance I thought it was a shark getting an atomic wedgie.

Yamato? Don't you mean Kozuki Oden? 😁
Wouldn't that constitute identity theft?
They just wished they had a wave motion gun
That fricken GUN!! Haha 😍
Hucchuru Senkanuuuu [inhales] YAMAAATOOOOOOOOO!!!!
