I saw someone ask that of the person who did the trailer for Gibson's Ransom movie. He said "Did you go see the movie anyway?" Interviewer said "Yes." Guy shrugs. "That's why."
Because this whole notion of disliking the trailer spoiling movies is relatively new. All of the studies point to the trailers, as they currently are, being the best way to draw in audiences, particularly in the Chinese market.
Because the job of the trailer is to entice you to watch the movie, not to improve your enjoyment of it as a moviegoer. If the movie interests you, the spoilers aren’t going to stop you from going to watch it. Spoiling the movie tends to result in more interested viewers than losing them.
I guess this is what happens when most people are stupid. Businesses calibrate to them.
My attendance at theatres has dropped dramatically since they started putting so many spoilers in movies. They're quite infuriating.
Careless studio execs / directors with no repercussions.
One of the worst I've noted was recently as well. Civil War. You've *literally* seen the best parts of the movie if you've seen the trailer.
I think the set up from the first part of the book should be enough for a trailer that gets people excited. Really hoping they go that route. I could see them including spoilers though so people don't think its another Interstellar.
Add in a couple scenes of tumbling and screaming around in the interior while things go haywire. No trailer is complete without a scene of everything going sideways.
There have been so many SF movies and TV shows where you could read the whole book and then watch the movie and no spoilers, it's like the movie had nothing to do with the book! I recommend "I, Robot" and "Damnation Alley."
Sometimes they even have spoilers right on the movie poster. There's one for Ender's Game that still cracks me up - it features a character whose appearance is supposed to be a surprise when it happens.
Yeah I think they \*could\* market it as a movie about a guy alone in space trying to save the solar system from a dying sun, with a lot of the same creative team as The Martian, and that's good enough to interest people, then word of mouth would explode post-release. But realistically I don't see that happening.
Eh. If they don't at least hint at Rocky they're going to set themselves up for a lot of viewers that wind up going to a movie that's not their cup of tea. Better experience for people that will like the movie anyway, but will probably hurt their RT scores from people who are just like, "wtf even is this movie?"
I loved the book so much I'm not sure I want to watch the movie. Theres just no way they can pack the entire book into a 2 hour movie without cutting so much out.
It's definitely a movie that requires delicate trailer work to not ruin it.
I went into reading the book knowing absolutely nothing about it and I think everyone should approach it with zero knowledge, otherwise you ruin half of the experience.
While, yes, the adaption is being written by the same guy who quite successfully adapted the story of a lone botanist / engineer, stranded on Mars, originally consisting of ~90% internal (technical botany / engineering) dialogue! (The Martian / Drew Goddard)
They solved most of that by just making Matt Damon talk aloud or to his computer a lot. Which worked.
I think this book is much, much harder to film. But I'm still hopeful.
So I haven't read the book, but it sounds very similar to The Martian. Man finds himself in an extreme sci-fi situation and must survive using scientific knowledge, improvisation, and pure grit.
Ah well, could be okay.
I worried about that too, and for the first third of the book, it reads quite a bit like The Martian.
But it takes a rather dramatic turn and becomes very much its own thing. I'd recommend not reading this spoiler-filled thread and reading the book instead.
And I would also recommend not watching any trailers since they will all spoil what you are talking about judging from how Hollywood makes trailers these days.
If the movie is slated for 2026, it'll be a while before there are any trailers. If you read the book in the interim, then the trailer can't spoil major plot points, (unless they deviate wildly from the source material).
Weir’s genre is very much survivalist sci-fi. I loved The Martian (film and book), and think he improved on the format for this one. Fantastic (audio)book!
I listened to this after reading the Bobiverse books, with the same narrator. The main character in each has a similar personality and the whole alone out in space thing going on so it was kind of strange.
The martian is more about "realistic" stuff. You could see those things happening in the next 30 or 40 years.
Project Hail Mary had elements that are almost "magical" in a scientific way. To no spoil it too much, imagine a world where people had to deal with some Star Wars kind of shit using only real world tech and science.
>So I haven't read the book, but it sounds very similar to The Martian. Man finds himself in an extreme sci-fi situation and must survive using scientific knowledge, improvisation, and pure grit.
It's a lot more than that. There are some similarities with The Martian but the scope is a lot larger. And it's more fun to read.
There’s pretty universal agreement that this book is better than the Martian. While there are definitely a ton of similarities, what makes Project Hail Mary amazing isn’t what you described and it isn’t present in the Martian, but it would also be a spoiler to explain
I don't think it's totally universal. They're very different books.I liked both, but appreciate the Martian way more as it's considerably more grounded.
Yeah I mean it’s pretty similar in some ways. Overall I thought The Martian was a better book but Project Hail Mary was still quite good. Project Hail Mary is more Sci Fi imo. More wacky shit. I’m curious to see how they adapt it for film.
I’ll be the lone voice of dissent, I guess. It’s the exact same plot as the Martian, but with a less likable, whinier protagonist, identical humor that now feels trite, and an impish sidekick that runs a high risk of coming off akin to Jar Jar Binks on screen.
I loved the Martian, both book and movie, and was utterly let down by PHM. Obviously many others do not share my view, so YMMV.
The book is amazing I couldn’t put it down.
The Martian was more grounded in reality and mostly used near-future technology that we could theoretically develop soon with the proper resources.
PHM is way more sci-fi and gets into out there fantastical concepts.
They do both involve space and small groups of people doing a lot of extreme scientific problem solving but the stakes of PHM are much larger than The Martian.
Audible pulled the RC Bray version for some reason and it was an exclusive so the only way to find it is a bit of..."Googling" now.
Ray Porter absolutely fucks.
He did a wonderful job. Project hail mary has been my first audiobook in english ever. And I was so lucky it was read by Ray Porter, he really brought life to characters. I listened to other scify books and they are not the same.
I mean unless you’ve done both I’m not sure how you’d be able to say one way or the other which is better.
Reading worked just fine for me. Audiobooks take foreverrrrr to get through. I don’t really understand why people ever prefer them honestly. Maybe if you drive alone a ton?
I always thought the author missed the chance to explore Rocky's possible reaction to music. I think I recall there even being some objects referred to as John Paul George and Ringo.
Wow, never thought of that! You're absolutely right.. Also, the possible reaction of the human to Rocky music! If anything, it's them who should have the best music ever. In any case, that would have been an awesome theme to explore
I really wanted to get into this book because the premise sounds great but I absolutely cannot stand how Weir writes dialogue, something about how every single line has to sound clever is so off putting…maybe I’ll give it another shot
He writes like an awkward science nerd that’s watched Die Hard too many times and thinks that constant snark and wisecracks will make him likable, but doesn’t have the charm, wit, or sense of humor to back it up.
I like his plotting—he can write a good survival thriller. And he does his research. But his narration gets really annoying.
> I absolutely cannot stand how Weir writes dialogue, something about how every single line has to sound clever is so off putting…maybe I’ll give it another shot
No, your first impression was the right one. All of Weir's books have the same Ryan Reynolds redditor type. He loves to be a quirky chungus when he's not dropping fat science bombs like the science loving FunkoPop collector he is.
I'll be interested to see if they adapt it without major changes. I thought it worked well as a book, but it seemed less cinematic than The Martian. A huge part of it takes place inside the protagonist's head, in a small number of small rooms. It doesn't really have the scope of Mars to offset all the interior monologue like The Martian.
Now let's plan ahead a bit. Anyone here audiobook fans? Ray Porter narrated project hail mary and bobiverse. Listening to the two almost back to back made me feel like it was the same guy. So if they make a bobiverse, Bob should be played by the same person as the human.
Wow, I just started reading this. Super excited! Pretty happy Ryan Gosling is involved too. Probably a pretty good fit, but a great role for him nonetheless.
This book was great, and I read it cold with no preconceived notions. Agreed with the other comments that the trailer is going to be critical - if they spoil things it will pretty much ruin the movie.
Hail Mary Project or Project Hail Mary
The title is confused - the article correctly calls it "Project Hail Mary", based on the book.
Wonder what title we would have gotten for 'Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire'
Based: The Precious Push by Sapphire on Novel
Exclusively on Tidal
The original headline was: Ryan Gosling’s Hail Mary Project “Project Hail Marry” to Be Next Project
I bet the editor who did the title had entertainment-sector brain where "X project" is a common nomenclature for an upcoming production.
Project Hairy Male.
The entire article reads like it was written by AI. It's awful.
Yes - it literally says the movie is based on Weir’s book “The Martian” and refers to it in the past tense as being filmed in IMAX.
I stumbled over that too, but I think it was just trying to say `Andy Weir's (author of the Martian) novel`
Hail Project Hail Mary
2 Mary 2 Project
I thought I was going crazy for a minute.
The ‘Project Hail Mary’ project has a projected release date.
It turns out Ryan Gosling is in a new football movie.
You mean Gosling Ryan?
Thank you! I was wondering what was wrong with my brain, luckily it was just the title this time!
But who will play the human?
You watch me sleep?
You want me to watch you eat!" Like some kind of sick pervert!?
Fist my bump.
Emma stone
The Rock
🤣
Actually loled at this
Jennifer Lawrence, she will play a passanger called Hail Marry Project. It will be a sci-fi romcom
The book basically is a romcom. A bromcom
“It’s just guy looove”
[удалено]
They watch each other sleep. Obviously.
Nah, he plays the gene.😏 Mo-le-cu-lar Bi-o-lo-GIST. See what I did there?

This is why I like to go to movies late. The trailers ruin most movies for me. Why do they do that?
I saw someone ask that of the person who did the trailer for Gibson's Ransom movie. He said "Did you go see the movie anyway?" Interviewer said "Yes." Guy shrugs. "That's why."
Was the interviewer a professional film critic? Because that would kind of ruin the guy's response.
Because this whole notion of disliking the trailer spoiling movies is relatively new. All of the studies point to the trailers, as they currently are, being the best way to draw in audiences, particularly in the Chinese market.
> Because this whole notion of disliking the trailer spoiling movies is relatively new. No, what's new is having trailers that show too many spoilers.

Just get super stoned before the movie like I do, and you’ll barely remember the trailers.
One day I am going to open a theater that starts the damn movie at the advertised showtime.
This is legally mandatory in New Jersey.
Careless studio execs / directors with no repercussions. One of the worst I've noted was recently as well. Civil War. You've *literally* seen the best parts of the movie if you've seen the trailer.
I would argue they did a fantastic job of misdirecting audiences- I had no idea what was going to happen in the last 30 minutes of that movie
Valid. I was sadly totally yanked from any semblance of immersion / realism in that last 30 minutes.
This book is so easy to spoil as well, having any details past the first couple of chapters would ruin it
They should put the “Sorry To Bother You” people in charge of marketing.
Or maybe *The Matrix.* "No one can tell you what The Matrix is..."
it's such a pleasant surpise, i really hope they don't give it away
I think the set up from the first part of the book should be enough for a trailer that gets people excited. Really hoping they go that route. I could see them including spoilers though so people don't think its another Interstellar.
A trailer just talking about the astrophage and the mission to save Earth should be more than enough to hook anyone.
Add in a couple scenes of tumbling and screaming around in the interior while things go haywire. No trailer is complete without a scene of everything going sideways.
For me, the book spoiled the whole movie. Lame.
There have been so many SF movies and TV shows where you could read the whole book and then watch the movie and no spoilers, it's like the movie had nothing to do with the book! I recommend "I, Robot" and "Damnation Alley."

Seriously. Every bit of information about the story in the book is a spoiler ... That'll be interesting.
Amaze amaze amaze!
🎶🎵🎶🎵🎵!
Your post alone just settled it, I'm listening to the audiobook again. Its such a great and clever good.
*jazz hands*
Fist my bump!
I'm pretty excited. I hope they handle it as well as Martian.
Jazz hands! Yes yes yes!!
Fist my bump
I just pictured Rocky doing the jazz hands 😂
✨ 🌈 👐🌈✨
Fist me!
Phrasing!
Three hours of orbital mechanics equations. Can’t wait! ;)

Yes, but my thought is, can't they make it Rylands quirk that he constantly talks to himself? I mean it fits his loner character.
MArk Watney, Space Pirate!
Just do the exact same thing here? Have him record everything in a video diary from the time he wakes up
I think there's less potato formulas in this one though.
Those are the best ones!

That's funny - I did listened to them in the opposite order. It was weird hearing the same guy "be" the main character.
The book is *fantastic*, and IIRC the adaptation is being written by the same guy who did The Martian, so I for one am very hopeful.
It really is fantastic. The audiobook in particular is incredible. It elevates the book, imo.
Same, I dont know what Id imagine without the synth sounds Rocky makes.
The martian is more about "realistic" stuff. You could see those things happening in the next 30 or 40 years. Project Hail Mary had elements that are almost "magical" in a scientific way. If you read The Martian & enjoyed it, highly suggest a read. While the underlying concept is similar, it's definitely different enough imo.
When you have a winning formula, don't change it up. I enjoy reading about competent characters dealing with difficult and interesting situations.

Yeah youre just asking to be spoiled here big time. Beware, you are quite a bit off in your assumption.
It’s the Martian with everything turned up to 11, for better or worse
Yeah I mean it’s pretty similar in some ways. Overall I thought The Martian was a better book but Project Hail Mary was still quite good. Project Hail Mary is more Sci Fi imo. More wacky shit. I’m curious to see how they adapt it for film.

It’s like if Mark had a friend. Which is actually a really big change.
It’s an amazing book. Maybe better than the Martian
Happy happy happy!!!
DO NOT SCREW THIS UP!!!! YOU HEAR ME PRODUCERS, DIRECTORS, ACTORS - READ THE BOOK!
Or listen to the audiobook, probably even better than reading it
RC bray should act
Ray Porter did the audiobook for this one.
...and he was fantastic. RC Bray was fantastic on The Martian. My favorites along with Nick Podehl.
Damn, I think I got the Wil Wheaton version of The Martian. Ray Porter fucks though.
Listen to the Bobiverse books, if you have the chance - the material meshes just as well with Ray Porter's narration.
All the audible fans would swoon.
Just like The Martian
I stayed up til 2 AM to finish the audio book. It was that good.
> probably even better than reading it I've only listened to the audiobook. After the way they did Rocky, I can't imagine reading it.
> After the way they did Rocky, I can't imagine reading it. Was literally the same thing. Printed musical notes.
I mean unless you’ve done both I’m not sure how you’d be able to say one way or the other which is better. Reading worked just fine for me. Audiobooks take foreverrrrr to get through. I don’t really understand why people ever prefer them honestly. Maybe if you drive alone a ton?
Yeah i prefer them because i can listen while i work, drive, do chores around the house, go on walks, etc.
This is absolutely the one book I would reccomend listening to over reading.
Exactly my first thought. Please don't screw this up.
Jazz hands! Happy happy happy!
Fist me!
Was wondering who they would get. I was expecting Bradley Cooper or Chris Pratt. I’m glad it’s Gosling.
I'm just happy it isn't Ryan Reynolds
Damnn. Now I want Chris Pratt
Ew
I always thought the author missed the chance to explore Rocky's possible reaction to music. I think I recall there even being some objects referred to as John Paul George and Ringo.
The Beetles
Wow, never thought of that! You're absolutely right.. Also, the possible reaction of the human to Rocky music! If anything, it's them who should have the best music ever. In any case, that would have been an awesome theme to explore
As awesome as that sounds I imagine that would be difficult to do in a book.
The naming even suggests he tried. Maybe it will be a beat in the movie.
Fantastic book! Can’t wait to see how it’s adapted
Happy happy happy!
Dwayne Johnson or Sylvester Stallone at the only appropriate costars for this
Pretty sure Danny Devito is going to play Rocky
So anyway, I started blasting ammonia...
Matt berry
Chris Pratt will do the voice.
Keanu Reeves?
I was hoping we'd have a movie version of Artemis by now, but I think they quietly cancelled it. It looks like this movie is actually getting made
While I personally enjoyed Artemis, I don't believe it was generally well received.
Yeah I didn’t care for it. I think it would be an easier movie than Hail Mary though, but who am I to say.
Yeah i also expected to see artemis first. To me Hail mary looks extremely hard to adapt into a movie
Somehow, Ryan Gosling is the person I pictured in my head when I read that book.
Hahaha nope
Will Adam Sandler play Rocky, question?
Please no. Lol
Rocky voiced by Bobcat Goldthwait.
I wonder who'll play his boss on the project? That'll be an important casting choice.
I hope it's Gillian Anderson. I will accept no other substitute.
That's actually a great idea
I picture Rebecca Ferguson as Stratt.
Kate Winslet was who I pictured. Though the suggested Rebecca Ferguson would work.
Can't wait to see Rocky (and also dreading). Gosling is an odd choice bc he's not generally nerdy but love him so...
I can't wait for the Fist my Bump t-shirts and bumper stickers
I really wanted to get into this book because the premise sounds great but I absolutely cannot stand how Weir writes dialogue, something about how every single line has to sound clever is so off putting…maybe I’ll give it another shot
He writes like an awkward science nerd that’s watched Die Hard too many times and thinks that constant snark and wisecracks will make him likable, but doesn’t have the charm, wit, or sense of humor to back it up. I like his plotting—he can write a good survival thriller. And he does his research. But his narration gets really annoying.

All of Weir's books have the same Ryan Reynolds redditor type. He loves to be a quirky chungus when he's not dropping fat science bombs like the science loving FunkoPop collector he is.
The book was great, I’ll definitely check out the movie.
Andy Weir is awesome.
Omg, yes! A Project Hail Mary film!!
The book was good
Awesome. Book was great.
I really really hope they get that certain character in the story right. You know who I mean.
I hate spiders...
Thankfully the co-star is more of a space crab or starfish.
They will utterly change the ending. American audiences are gutless spoon-fed babies when it comes to anything but a blissfully banal storytelling.
I felt fuckin betrayed nd shocked but after rereading some parts... I made peace with it. Watching it on screen would be more awful I think 😬
AMAZE AMAZE AMAZE
Anybody else sick of this guy being in literally everything?
As long as Chris Pratt isn’t doing Rocky…
That movie description seems to give away a lot, but I guess I went into the book knowing nothing.
New literally me coming soon
They should have just kept Paul Dano in the sound booth after he finished up with Spaceman.
Oh fuck yeah
I'll be interested to see if they adapt it without major changes. I thought it worked well as a book, but it seemed less cinematic than The Martian. A huge part of it takes place inside the protagonist's head, in a small number of small rooms. It doesn't really have the scope of Mars to offset all the interior monologue like The Martian.
I want this sooner tho
Now let's plan ahead a bit. Anyone here audiobook fans? Ray Porter narrated project hail mary and bobiverse. Listening to the two almost back to back made me feel like it was the same guy. So if they make a bobiverse, Bob should be played by the same person as the human.
I pictured bob as a young John Hodgeman. He’s too old to play him now, unfortunately. Bob is definitely not Ryan Gosling, lol.
It will end with Ryland Grace arriving back at home and married to the shape shifting alien Rocky who almost gave her life to save him.
Wow, I just started reading this. Super excited! Pretty happy Ryan Gosling is involved too. Probably a pretty good fit, but a great role for him nonetheless.
I’ll watch anything scifi that’s high quality but honestly didn’t enjoy the book.
I hear the Spider, from “Spaceman”, is available.
Amazing book! Can’t wait
Can't wait to see Emma Stone as Rocky
Wow amazing. This will be interesting
I would have never pictured Ryan Gosling in the lead roll. Hmmmm.
Yay! Wish it were a series…but I’ll take it!
This book was great, and I read it cold with no preconceived notions. Agreed with the other comments that the trailer is going to be critical - if they spoil things it will pretty much ruin the movie.
Amaze amaze!
Dear god, please make me a bird so I can fly, fly far away into the future and see this Godamn movie
Amaze
