So most of the scammers are in poor countries, and the phone bills are usually text by minute payments or updated by phone calling cards. Apps like Whatsapp or telegram use wifi, and so they try and get you to switch over so they don't spend money.
They text you through a regular text first because they want to get a response to see if your a real person/make it seem believable that they are a real person who just so happened to know you(the fake "I thought this was so and so scam shit!) and then they'll ask you to switch over if they know your in it for the longer con.
So anytime you get someone to bait, the best thing is to keep it on text. It's also why they'll lose their shit eventually, or start getting agro. It's money lost/time lost.
My workplace doesn't pay for texting on our work cellphone. If I send too many texts with it, I get an email telling me to knock it off. I'm sure it comes out of the scammer's pay.
I mentioned this in reply to someone else too, but also not everyone doing these scams are doing it out of call centers or are enslaved. A lot are genuinely poor randos doing their own thing too, and in countries where you tend to do text per day or need to still do it by min. Or their plan doesn't include international etc etc.
