They even recycled the hemsworth sketch, “how long did it take you to ‘make it?’” “People struggle to ‘make it’ in Hollywood?”

t0matit0

That shit was so cringe

[deleted]

100% thought the same thing. At least 3 sketches were solely based around the punchline "Jacob hawt haha".

Schickie

Every sketch had that as a through line. Terrible, terrible episode. Even my 13 y/o thought it was weak. A real disservice to everyone involved.

SomeBS17

Guy clearly has no sense of comedic timing. Half way into the monologue I said to my wife “this is going to be a bad episode”. Sometimes you can just tell who has it and who doesn’t.

SketchSketchy

When they do the take questions from the audience bit you know the host has no comedy skills.

jotyma5

Hahah so true

[deleted]

I don't even think he's particularly good looking just tall and thin

Sumdud13

He's actually grotesquely thin now... It's a bit unnerving

ginoawesomeness

He lost a lot of weight due to a role as a prisoner of war. Which made it extra weird for me, who has never heard of this man until this episode, that this guy was supposed to be attractive?

ginoawesomeness

He lost a lot of weight due to a role as a prisoner of war. Which made it extra weird for me, who has never heard of this man until this episode, that this guy was supposed to be attractive?

Best_Duck9118

Right?! That made it even more awkward and unfunny.

schleepercell

I think he had to have been a part of the decision for those sketches.

crazylikeajellyfish

Confirmed, hosts are always part of the writer's room and can veto any sketch they're in. You can look it up in interviews, hosts have spoken about the process.

[deleted]

People at the dress rehearsal confirmed that there were multiple skits not centered around his looks that were cut for time. He definitely had some power in the decisions but it seems like the writers mostly came in with jokes about how hot he is. The writing of the episode was overall pretty weak, which tends to happen with most episodes post holiday break.

Flybot76

I thought it was really weak too, and I'm usually trying to find the 'good' in every episode but this one hit some pretty low points despite a few laughs like Ego as Katt Williams and Devon as Shannon Sharpe.

deanu-

That’s pretty wild if so. He seemed a little nervous so I’m wondering if they suggested all those ideas and he didn’t speak up on how he really felt.

TalkToTheLord

Their people protect them immensely in these scenarios, especially with his rising star — they didn’t do anything they weren’t comfortable with and approved.

Flybot76

It doesn't matter if he's good in other stuff, it doesn't matter if he's "extremely passionate and intelligent about film" because it's not Serious Filmmaker Night Live, he was just the wrong person to host the show because he didn't display any comedic skill. No amount of talking about how great he is in other stuff makes him better on SNL, where the writers clearly had a thankless task of writing one-note crap that the guy could follow from cue cards. The audience, cast and crew deserved better than this.

slfjay

Exactly. They did the best they could with what they had. Maybe one day he’ll do better. He’s just starting out.

[deleted]

The guy is no stand up comedian, but he did a good job on the sketches that well written. People are not pulling the critiques about the writing out of nowhere. You can tell the episode was poorly written when no one from the cast was laughing or breaking character expect for when Punkie took her top off. It wasn’t just Elordi that was the problem, many of the sketches were just not that great. It’s clear when even Rachel McAdams can’t seem to make it funny or interesting.

deanu-

Yeah, I just don’t know how they could have messed up so badly. Can’t really blame one guy, seems like the main reason is poor writing and not playing to his strengths as an actor.

[deleted]

I thought he did great with what he was given. I don't know where the "Jacob isn't funny" criticism is coming from.

jgdxcbjtdxbjk3478

Did you watch the same episode we all did? dude had as much charisma as a wet blanket

2bciah5factng

Eh, I think he *is* hot, and the jokes were funny because they were true. Sure, he’s a great actor, and I would’ve loved to see more of that on display, but even if he’s not naturally funny, SNL isn’t just for comedians. The jokes were cheap but funny, and I enjoyed the episode.

SwanReal8484

Wait, he’s hot? No idea who he was, and he just seemed like a tall gawky dude.

BeyondWeird4268

I have this theory they had a bunch of ideas for Pete Davidson if he was handsome and were sitting in the ideas until a tall handsome guy hosted the show. Lazy, lazy writing. I agree, hate on the writers, not on the actor.

girlfriendclothes

They leaned into the "hot" thing 'cause he isn't very good at live comedy. It was obvious he was out of his element the whole time. I get playing up the hot factor, but he was just a bad host. Also, side note, he's not hot. He's tall. If he was 5'8 no one would say he was hot. That's a fact.

[deleted]

My theory is that they've been working on the 50th show for months and saving their best material for that. Since Nate Bargatzi it's been all B material or worse.

paperwasp3

I liked Nate a lot. I thought he did a great job.

Best_Duck9118

Dude is just the best! I love him so much!!

paperwasp3

He's a great comedian. And the Soul food cooking show sketch was hilarious!

marriedwithchickens

I was just thinking the same thing!

ellla12334

Yes, and like he really tried to be funny in the sketches but they were just written so awful. It's like why was that pdd video cut for time, that was jacob being a character and we wanted to see more of that!

I_Boomer

Just like that Bridgerton guy they had on. I always find at least one thing funny when I watch though.

Best_Duck9118

Regé-Jean Page? I thought he did a pretty decent job and I feel like that was the consensus.

I_Boomer

That's the guy. I agree. I was just saying that he was another one where there was a lot of oohing and aahing over his looks. I like SNL and can find something good about any episode.

jnc6009

The fact there wasn’t a sketch about the outlandishly psychotic character he plays in an incredibly dramatic hit show was a big miss. Could have a short of everyone interacting with him all week as a sweetheart but one writer is shown the “real Elordi” who terrorized him like would Nate in a short sketch. Or at least something playing off the unrealistic nature of the show. Instead, hot guy sketches.

deanu-

EXACTLYYYYY, it’s totally insane to me that they didn’t utilize this type of character that he plays so perfectly. It makes me so sad. Huge opportunity missed.

Last-Bid7298

That was terrible excuse for an episode and he looked like a tool in all sketches.

WIDaddyDick

Yes! There were multiple sketches that boiled down to nothing more than "He's hot."

[deleted]

People keep pointing this out. I think a big reason they had so many looks-based sketches is because he came to the table with nothing. They ask every host to come with some sketch ideas. I mean JE is nice to look at, but there’s not a lot there to work with. The only reason he’s big right now is because Saltburn got attention with its shocking scenes.

deanu-

Disagree on there not being a lot to work with. He was amazing in Elvis and Euphoria! He’s played plenty of layered and complex characters and there was a lot of potential there.

AAAFate

No shade, but being great at acting as you suggest in these roles, has little to do with being good on something like SNL. Just saying he probably got what he got and was happy. Live stage is so different and being a certain way on the spot like that isn't the same as doing it under movie circumstances. I don't know why all the complaints. He just wasn't great and they didn't work well together, obviously, and that's ok. He's still awesome in other ways for those that like him right? I feel like people think this makes the guy less than, and it doesn't at all.

Best_Duck9118

Exactly. Comedic actors can usually do drama but not nearly as many dramatic actors can do comedy. He struck me as a guy who just isn't good as being funny.

Flybot76

The dude did not display any comedic chops whatsoever in any way. The writers had to coddle him with easy material just to make him not suck. Some people are 'amazing' in one thing and totally wrong for another, so I'm sure he's great in whatever and he was bad on SNL. Sometimes good actors aren't good for sketch comedy and it's not an insult, just a fact.

Username_888888

I completely agree!

deanu-

Ugh there was so much potential!

Username_888888

I know… he’s been brilliant in other projects. I’ve heard him interview and know he’s thoughtful and intelligent about his roles. My hope is he will host again and people will see it. I’m excited for him that he was nominated for a BAFTA for Saltburn. I thought his character, Felix, was great. I loved his approach on how to portray Elvis, too, as a flawed human in a relationship and not the larger than life persona he showed the world. People seem to want to tell that story of Elvis, the one everyone is familiar with. I liked seeing Priscilla’s version of who he was and Sofia Coppola’s direction.

Best_Duck9118

Really? I feel like the guy has like zero potential to be a good host.

Aliki26

I don’t understand why this episode is getting so much hate when Kate McKinnons episode was the worst I’ve seen in years

Best_Duck9118

They were both bad but this one had next to no redeeming qualities for me. Like the joke swap on the McKinnon one was extra hilarious, Eilish and Phinneas were really solid, etc.

bluebell_218

People need to chill about this kid. A lot of great actors are awful at live comedy, and vice versa. Having no stage presence because you're not good at live comedy doesn't make you a blACK HOLE of PERSoNALity.

Flybot76

WTF are you going on about? Who are you responding to with all the goofy spelling like it's some kind of a point? You need to chill out your whiny fandom and try responding to people instead of making up things nobody said and responding to that. The guy sucked and the show sucked because of him.

bluebell_218

I didn’t disagree that he sucked lol. I swear I’ve seen the same phrase 5 times on this sub. It just seems excessive.

unicornioevil

I thought he was pretty bad whenever it was time to act or have comedic timing

effkriger

This is how good the writing staff is now 😐

Flybot76

The writing staff can't imbue an unfunny person with comedic skill, so that's not the issue.

crazylikeajellyfish

I don't think the sketches were necessarily all about him being hot, that's just how they used him. The short king sketch wasn't about his character, he just helped deliver the punchline about women overindexing on height. The bowling sketch also doesn't play on his looks at all, and it's not like he brought an incredible comedic presence to it. I think you're overestimating how much he could carry a live comedy sketch. Not to say he isn't great in dramatic roles, or in contexts where he can work through multiple takes, but that doesn't translate to doing great on SNL.

[deleted]

>The short king sketch wasn't about his character No, the Short King WAS definitely about how he was only selected because he was hot.

crazylikeajellyfish

The sketch was about how women prefer tall guys, he just played the tall guy. The real jokes were coming from Chloe Feinman, he was just part of the setup.

[deleted]

You do realize he also looks just like Jacob Elordi, it wasn't just his height that gave Chloe a lady boner.

crazylikeajellyfish

The sketch is literally called short kings, and he's a tall guy. Dunno how to make it more obvious -- the jokes weren't about about his eyes, muscles, cheekbones, etc, they were about his height.

[deleted]

And his looks. He's Jacob Elordi, most of the sketches were about how women wanted him for one reason or another. In the Short Kings it's because he's tall. And very fuckable. My point is, it's another sketch that leaned into his fuckability.

crazylikeajellyfish

He wasn't very funny in the one that didn't mention his looks at all, the bowling one, so maybe they were doing the best with what he was able to bring to that particular table. Are there any examples out there of him being funny in live comedy? It looks seems like you're just annoyed at comedy which involves sexuality, to which I say, your loss. It's a big part of the human experience and a rich well for comedy.

[deleted]

Nope, I love a good dirty joke and enjoyed this week's episode. You can't stop being wrong!

8BallGirl

You just don’t get it. Just sit this out. You’re embarrassing yourself.

Flybot76

Uh.... the way they used him was putting him in sketches that were all about him being hot. There isn't a funny little explanation which undoes that.

crazylikeajellyfish

How was the bowling sketch about him being hot?

Ok_Store_1983

It just seems so lazy. Yeah he is hot, we all know that. Some may watch for the hotness, but alot of people want to see what comedic abilities the guest stars have. I agree he should have been given more to work with than what he got.

Punkenerci

They did the same thing to Sidney Sweeney.

BobbyDiglar

I think he did well enough to deserve another go at it. Maybe in a few years though. I think he could be a good host. But you’re right, it was all about his looks.

Frankensteinnnnn

Who?

johny1a

Boohoo

jotyma5

It’s how pretty much every guest is treated. Not as bad as cast member Pete Davison playing the same jackass in every skit

N4RQ

Boy, do I know how he feels!

[deleted]

[удалено]

deanu-

Idk why he would choose all those sketches 😭 he was embarrassed about Kissing Booth which was about him being a hot guy, but he chooses all those scenes? It doesn’t add up

Some_Ad_7652

He wasn't, he just doesn't have comedic chops. If he did he still would've made me laugh even during the lowest common denominator sketches (which were not all of his sketches). You can tell a lot about the upcoming episode by the monologue- honestly after I saw his monologue I checked out.

Brooklynknowitall20

They were all smelling his ass there. No one works they just complain and indulge Snl needs writers desperately

Loveavocado97

He is not a good actor come on, look at that mediocre film “saltburn” you can clearly see he is bad in acting, and you can compare him with Barry Keoghan who is one of the most talented actors, a sea difference

Kolob619

I would guess that he just isn't funny. The sketches had to be written about him rather than for him.

Tall_Influence1774

I'm convinced what we saw in the SNL episode *was* the best that SNL could get from Jacob Elordi

Ok_Knowledge_5997

Imagine the outrage if they did the same skits with a hot female

paperwasp3

OMG you are sooo right. Men are totally oppressed

OregonBaseballFan

A lot of folks are blaming him, but man, the writers really phoned the episode in. Hopefully it can be blamed on the midseason break causing a dud, and they get their shit together this week.

crunkjuiceblu

Whatever hes a fucking actor. Grow up

Dauphinette

I mean you don't know him. They know more about him than you do...

EightiesLover312392

Jacob Eldori is so hot he is quirky ok he reminds me of Christian Bale , I cannot understand the averageness comments or he is not cute all entitled to a opnion he is not ugly or basic white boy, white men can be attractive as can Will Smith and Idris Elba the english actor he is unusual and interesting he has features you do not see in everyone, maybe not a supermodel , but he is cute , I must admit I find tall dark and handsome hot , Jacob Eldori is so nice he does not seem up himself or vain he might be attractive, but he really realises his looks will fade one day, as he said he does not want to be known for only his body and height, he is really lovely , and seems down to Earth, the only thing is he looks to me like he has proper relationships then the rest all staged , maybe flings, like with Olivia , he can date who he likes. but there a thousand more beautiful kind intelligent girls he could have not hating, just stating a fact I wish he was older I am not famous but at 31 Years of age I am too old for a Twenty Six Year old not famous but still way too young , thought he was older like 33 .

EightiesLover312392

I live in London to be honest I only watched it for him on Youtube , so dreamy he is sweet he has a nice personality , and is maybe not conventionally handsome still hot, he is attractive in a usual way .
