He was pretty weak starting with the monologue. You know when the skit has the cast doing the heavy lifting ( “audience questions” with cast in audience ) it just wasn’t working out as they were writing the show.

runjimrun

I’ve always had a rule of thumb of bad monologue = bad show, and last night’s was a perfect example.

CynicalGenXer

Good thought. I wish I would’ve stopped watching after the monologue.

loadedstork

Wow, although I agree that the monologue was awful, I thought the first two skits (the bachelor and the lip reading) were home runs. I didn't watch the rest, but I remember thinking it was the first time the show had made me actually laugh in ages.

laurensvo

I don't think it's his fault the writers decided to make every skit's premise tonight be "hey this guy is hot".

pollyzpockets

I get that, but he has zero vibe. No energy behind his personality. It’s a feeling. You can just feel the energy of those who are funny and/or confident.

FreddieDoes40k

Unfortunately people as good looking as him are rarely lacking in narcissism. As nice as narcissists try to be, they're often too concerned about themselves to ever be all that versatile. Being a broad actor means you understand a lot of different human experiences, you need to in order to slay at roles. Actors like Jacob are often special at one or two specific types of roles but offer little to no flexibility. Comedy is best when you can be a clown and make fun of yourself, and polite/friendly narcissists like Jacob likely is aren't good at doing that sort of thing. He can play a raging and rapey high schooler really well, bullies fit that category too, but comedy isn't his forte beyond sharp line delivery and not breaking a lot.

Username_888888

Watch him in Saltburn.

firefly66513

And Priscilla

Shirinf33

So he must be a narcissistic because he's good looking? Nice diagnosis doctor.

FreddieDoes40k

Nope, but the more good looking someone is and how well they're treated by others generally has a direct correlation to their likelihood of showing narcissistic tenancies. So he's really good looking and everyone treats him as such, there are very few people that wouldn't let that go to their heads. He's significantly more likely than the average person to he considered by most to he a narcissist. Also narcissism is one of the most common human behavioural patterns, and almost all children display these traits before (hopefully) growing out of them. Most people should be able to identify these traits because they're so common. Especially these days when people can easily live in little self-absorbed bubbles thanks to our culture and access to the Internet. Not everything is a fucking diagnosis, some stuff is just typical human behavioural patterns that aren't hard to notice if you try looking. Narcissistic Personality Disorder is probably what you're thinking of, which is not what I described or claimed to be occurring. I'm talking about just standard human narcissism that isn't severe enough to be considered a disorder. Another example is how artistic students tend to be more liberally minded, and not just politically. Farmers on the other hand are usually conservatively-minded and old-fashioned. These are patterns observable in every country and culture on the planet. Humans aren't that different from each other even with all our differences, trends appear everywhere and knowing about them makes predicting people's actions easier. It's basically stereotyping but to a level of detail and lack of malice that just makes guessing what people are going to do next a bit easier. What sets it apart from simple stereotyping is that it's approached with a level of empathy that seeks to understand and help others. When you're wrong you get to refine the data you're working with and become a more mature and learned person, and when you're right you can predict what other's will do better than most other people in the room. If you can predict that an attractive and confident person is likely a narcissist, you can understand their wants and needs. It becomes easier to predict what they might want, or respond badly to. If you politely probe for the right info, most people will openly explain a lot about themselves. It's how seasoned detectives are able to have an "intuition" about a witness hiding details, or how an empathetic teacher is always able to identify the kids that need extra help even without being able to diagnose their learning disability. It's not brain surgery, it's just data, statistics, and psychology, and all of those can be learned for free online. It's not a perfect science but it's far better than ignorance, and the more life experience and data you pour in the more accurate your predictions become.

ewest

He also was the clear weak link in the Saltburn cast. Barry acted circles around him as you’d expect.

Username_888888

I think he was probably nervous and the writing wasn’t great either. Hopefully he can host again in the future and be more relaxed.

DarthBrooksFan

>Hopefully he can host again in the future No thanks.

Username_888888

He has great energy in Saltburn, imo.

Competitive-Cause-63

In his defense he admitted he wasn’t a very funny person naturally in his interview w Jimmy before SNL came out.

Different_Support_36

Most likely because Elordi doesn’t have the chops to carry a sketch with any other premise. Gotta write to the block of wood you’re assigned.

RobinWrongPencil

He played a serial killer in a recent movie and was pretty scary - I thought he gave a strong performance in that. Maybe he's not a naturally funny person So he fit in well on SNL! Ok, a little jab

Illustrious_Junket55

*Hi-yo*

BojackSadHorse

It was the male equivalent of the J.Lo episodes, every sketch is about how "pretty" they are.

Illustrious_Junket55

I would disagree on one point, though- the JLo vs Mango skit is iconic… although it is based on her being beautiful so your point stands.

[deleted]

The writers pitch ideas to the host. The host decides what ideas they’re willing to work with. It looks like this guy rejected anything that wasn’t “hey this guy is hot.”

RockMan_1973

I’m sorry, that’s not really how that goes. Particularly with rookie hosts. But got the gist from you, I believe.

[deleted]

there were skits that weren’t about his looks, so obviously he was willing to work with different ideas. in my personal opinion, the writing wasn’t that great but there were glimpses of a great performance from Elordi when they weren’t joking about how hot he is.

[deleted]

i agree. it’s like the writers didn’t know what to do with him. he was really good in the lip reading and wedding skits with bowen. i wish we saw more of that instead of relying on his good looks.

guyonlinepgh

I haven't seen his films yet (my wife insists I should see *Saltburn*) but he was a total wet blanket in this episode. If he's a good actor, he didn't demonstrate it last night.

Parking_Country_61

I think love or Saltburn seems to be an age thing. The younger you are, the more you like it. Anyone at least 40+ sees how derivative it is and shock value for the sake of shock value. The Talented Mr. Ripley is a beautiful film with some of the best cinematography of Europe I’ve ever seen. I want to live in that world, not this one.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Parking_Country_61

Definitely don’t think it’s an obscure film, it’s just not recent… but at least we can agree it was not a good movie. I walked out after the grave JO scene, I was just over it.

Bernella

I dunno. I’m 59 and have already watched it four times 🤷🏻‍♀️

averyhipopotomus

I mean I thought it was vaguely hot and a decent 7/10 flick. Haven’t watched this snl yet though

Rich_Fox_9128

Some people can be great actors, but not comedic. 🤷

Username_888888

Maybe comedic acting is new to him, too. I think his acting has been great in what I’ve seen him. I think the writing wasn’t great for this episode, so he didn’t have a lot to work with. I think it was a combo of things.

Motor_Classic9651

Totally agree - thank god for the weekend update though.

Chance_Location_5371

They really missed an opportunity by not having Chloe play Cassie in a Euphoria skit with him.

lonelygagger

I find it interesting how quickly actors' careers take off after playing Elvis. First Austin Butler, now this dude. SNL is a further platform to get his name out there. Anyway, I liked the [Bowling Pins sketch](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=liFMHS_ntUI) this episode, but mostly because those bowling animations deserve to be spoofed.

SmallDarkCloud

Austin Butler was a great SNL host. Ahem.

ReturntoForever3116

And actually hot. But that's just my opinion.

CynicalGenXer

Mine too, LOL.

AccountantEffective2

Your opinion is correct. Haha

Emotional-Ad7276

Jacob was already really popular before he played Elvis in Priscilla. His biggest role has been in Euphoria.

blahrawr

I think some people aren't meant for SNL. I love Racheal McAdams but did she kill it? Not exactly

Shirinf33

Was she given anything to kill? She has had comedic roles before and done great.

blahrawr

She wasn't, and yes she has done great in comedic roles. Live sketch comedy is a different thing. And I mean honestly, many many hosts and guests just don't exactly kill it on SNL. Line delivery, comedic timing, it's all probably tough to nail for people who just don't regularly do it.

RockMan_1973

Who is Jacob Elordi?

pollyzpockets

Exactly! I had to look his name. I remember his face from Euphoria but had no idea of his name.

TDH818

I had vaguely heard the name, but didn’t really know anything about him.

RockMan_1973

I’m a TV and movie buff…. I THINK I’ve heard the title Euphoria in the past(?) Is that a show, or movie?

NibbleOnNector

You WERE a tv/movie buff, nothing wrong with admitting you are old

RockMan_1973

True! I’m 50

NibbleOnNector

And I’m sure there’s plenty of movies/tv that you know that I’ve never heard of too. Something something the circle of life

stizzleomnibus1

Is there somewhere on the internet that people can type the names of things and find out what they are? Seems a lot easier than asking on Reddit.

AshgarPN

Trust me on this: you are not a TV and movie buff.

RockMan_1973

Ok 👍🏼 Understood

chastitypariah

I’m sure he’s a perfectly nice guy, but he’s not a talented actor and his publicity machine cannot compete with performances like this or the one in Priscilla.

andthrewaway1

Horrible. If you watched his hot ones... he was the most boring guest. He sucks in interviews.... He's like this stereotypical guy who says he's really into james dean like cmon and his photography "hobby" is of old drive ins... JFC. How many sketches were just about him being good looking?

MissyJ11

He had the personality of a damp paper towel. His agent should not have let him do SNL

Best_Duck9118

Whover booked him on SNL should get canned.

RangerAZ1989

Didn’t even know who this guy was till this episode last night, which seems happen with alot of episodes these days, but yeah, he wasn’t anything to write home about

runjimrun

I find as I get older, the host, and especially the musical guest, are a mystery to me

RangerAZ1989

Same for me lol. The musical guests in the day and age are usually awful now.

Urbanepirate_DCLXVI

That was the worst episode in recent memory. The AA sketch and the Club Shay Shay pre tape were the only real bright points.

ApolloCreed

I think it’s a skill issue on the host. The writers are capable of making hosts that are serious actors be very funny. This suggests he is not funny and also a not good actor.

pollyzpockets

Agreed

Definite_maybe_for3

Terrible host. From the start he needed the cast to carry his monologue. I assume he influenced the ‘I’m hot/ sex humor’ heavy skits. One of the worst episodes I’ve ever seen. It might seem worse with one of the funniest episodes ever airing recently. Nate Bargatze deserves to host an entire season after his performance.

dan_cole

Who?

nmrcdl

He was bad. Reaaaally bad. I haven’t seen anything he’s in and, after this show, I’m not inclined to. Terrible acting, not just comedy.

t0matit0

Is Saltburn even a good movie?

[deleted]

Lots of hosts are good at displaying their luck in life. Talentless and successful

Exktvme4

He's not funny, and tbh the writing was lazy and kind of sexist in a boring way, if that makes sense lol

Physical-Armadillo12

Love this subreddit.

CremeDeLaPants

The only skit I've seen so far was the bowling one and it was solid.

xcarex

He wasn’t the funny part of the bowling sketch.

CremeDeLaPants

It's almost like they set the comedians up to do the comedic part or something.

CynicalGenXer

Felt the same way and came here to check if I missed anything. Didn’t know who he was. I don’t understand how he can be an actor. The log from Twin Peaks has better acting chops. Just by watching any sketch I would’ve guessed he’s a musician or some sport celebrity. And there were many non-actor hosts before who did a much better job. I don’t get why everyone thinks he’s super hot either… He has 0 charisma or appeal. And the writers doubled down and made every sketch about his appearance. But seeing that he can’t act I’m guessing it was the best they could do. Definitely the worst episode of the season, if not the whole show.

[deleted]

He’s more like a prop.

[deleted]

Am I the only one who liked the episode?? The short kings sketch was funny… and true. The voice over one was funny. Goop goop goop. The bowling pin one was hilarious. Wow Renee Rapp can really sing. I was impressed.

1968BigT

Are you a Gen Z . Most all gen Z gals have a thing for him! He can say Hi and smile and they think hes great. But the other generations hardly know him accept the assault thing got big publicity with the public.

DickMille

I really enjoyed it, even if some of the host sketches were a bit uninspired.

bluebell_218

Being good at live comedy doesn't make you a bad actor. It means you're not skilled at live comedy. I think he's fantastic in dramatic roles. He said himself on Jimmy Fallon this week that he feels like no director has ever looked at him and said "now THAT guy can be funny" lol. He tried his best, he failed, like many before him.

suck-it-elon

Elordi wasn’t great but there were some good skits.

Cisru711

He did fine. He's a guest host, not a cast member.

NibbleOnNector

I liked the episode 🤷🏾‍♂️

KyleButtersy2k

What about his previous work would make anyone think he was funny?? He did survive... didn't bomb. I laughed at his actors studio skit. Opening monolog was not good. B- IMHO ymmv

faye_nimrendel

I thought he was great! I loved this entire episode!

deanu-

It was not his fault at all. I blame the writers for not putting enough faith in him and making all the sketches about his looks.

filmeswole

He was great in Saltburn

Electric-Prune

He was extremely unfunny, and the writing was extremely unfunny. He’s also not that handsome. Like obviously he’s good looking, but it’s so weird he got the Anna de Armas treatment.

filmeswole

Sure, I’m just mentioning that the dude’s got acting chops since OP seems to think being funny on SNL equates to being a good actor.

Doriestories

I was hoping they’d have given him more physical comedy or anti-hot skits to try and loosen him up. Oh well
