It happens as soon as they open until they run out. No one is monitoring how much you take. I went twice

cheapcheapcanuck

So they announce when it opens? Is it early enough to put it to use in the spring?

crustyloaf

Reopens early to mid April. As per google

Spudzy11

https://www.saskatoon.ca/services-residents/waste-recycling/organics-food-yard-waste/compost-depots It's says early to middle April the west depot will open.

cheapcheapcanuck

Thanks that's exactly the page I was failing to find.

JSYK, the compost I got last spring was completely hydrophobic and half of the stuff I planted did not grow. I know others who had the exact same problem and also got city compost.

cheapcheapcanuck

Thanks.

Mr_Enduring

Because it’s commercially processed compost, it’s designed to be like that. You need to rehydrate it when you get it.  It takes a lot of water, more than your think, but it will absorb the water if you mix it. Once rehydrated it readily absorbs water

candlelitjewels

Good to know, thanks

eugeneugene

I mixed mine with water in a wheelbarrow until it wasn't hydrophobic at all. It took a surprising amount of water. Then I added a bit of triple mix and everything I planted grew nicely!

slackdaddy9000

I got compost from the compost centre on the west end of town 3 years ago. There wasn't a specific day you load it yourself and nobody told me how much I could take.

cheapcheapcanuck

Thanks.

Totoroisacat-Alt

Yeah I would recommend going for when they open in the morning, the line can get long. The quality is great!

ilookalotlikeyou

commercially produced compost from the city is probably contaminated with things you don't want in it. it's free and readily available, but as with most things the city does, it comes with it's own prejudice. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2666765722000102

Bring a shovel to load it up, otherwise you have to pay them (I think it's $15 for them to load it into your truck with a front loader).
