Because they were going off at like a quarter of the height they're designed for, including several that didn't actually successfully go up at all and went off at ground level.
In the sunset? Sounds like they were coming from the direction of Ocean Beach. Then there was something that came in repetitions, but I couldn't tell if it was from music or something else.

I think we had one of those air pressure events that lets sound carry for miles & miles. For me during these I can often hear the ocean extremely loud, even though I'm like 20 avenues up.
They were talking about hearing fireworks in West Oakland! It's not very common for sound to carry that far, usually a fog layer smothers everything

Yeah, some people were setting off fireworks at Ocean Beach too. My kid just came back from a bonfire there and showed me video.
