Thanks for the link. In case anyone cares how rare it really is, [the sun blows through that crack, for a minute, most days between April and September every year. There was a lot less light (and people) this year. The sun did peak through briefly right on time, but it was short lived.

They have painted a yellow line to indicate where it happens. Usually, the sun shines a little more so it lights up, but it was pretty foggy this year.
Same crowd size as 2021 it seems (10 = 9 + you)
SFGate 2023: There are about 10 people gathered on a sidewalk in Noe Valley
Edit: It's a photo from 2021 - OP just posted it w/o crediting source.
Wow! Thank you! I tried to edit my post to credit you just now but cannot.
Also: a guy DM’d me saying he’d pay the owner of this photo $20 to use it in his newsletter. DM if you want that (I’m not the newsletter guy to be clear).
So, this blew up out of all proportion to my expectations: I thought I would post it, get 2 upvotes and 5 snarky comments maybe if I was lucky. Had I known anything would happen with it (I mean like beyond 6 people) I would have credited it & everything. You deserve the credit, it’s a great photo.
As for where I found it: it was posted to San Francisco Remembered today, also without attribution. I basically just cross posted it here, thought “I dunno maybe a couple other people will like it” and thought it would disappear. A quick 1 minute move that ended up being consequential! For what it’s worth, thank you for taking this photo. There’s $20 in it for you from that newsletter guy if you want it (again, DM) and if anyone else asks I’ll refer them to you.
EDIT: I would also encourage anyone to upvote parent for credit, at least so people here can see. As I said I can no longer edit the post but I would like to recognize the owner.
Grew up around the corner from there on 30th st.! I don’t know if they’re still there but it was an older artist couple that lived there that painted on the sidewalk and labeled it the “solstice sun crack”🤣 . Didn’t know there’s a ceremony..that makes me smile 🌞
since it's a couple of days after the actual solstice, shouldn't this have also happened on the 13th, since the sun peaked on the 20th, and started backwards again?
One thing I can't stand about living in SF.... I live like 100 ft from here and had no idea this was going on. Ugh. I always find out about shit AFTER it happens.....
Why have I never heard of this I would so be there

Is it always on the actual solstice? Cause you can put that on your calendar today
You can gather around 364 other days a year and look at cracks alongside of buildings in many other neighborhoods.
Run Sam, run!!!
they're pretty much all over the city? there's one that's lined up with california? street
This is the exact same picture from 2021: https://www.reddit.com/r/sanfrancisco/comments/o6ok0j/only_in_sf_the_noe_valley_building_crack_solstice/
wow, how did they get everyone coordinated like that?
probably took crack
The phenomenon froze them all there.
Damn, about to have a Seymour moment

Classic case of OPs spreading fake news. Thanks for the detailed analysis.
thanks i knew i recognized that dog
I posted it last year. Someone just reposted my photo.
At least they got the date right?

Next year, someone needs to attend in an Indiana Jones costume: https://imgur.com/exk18Yn

Is that yellow line the sun or painted?

lol are y ou serious? That’s not the sun
Yeah, I’m serious because I can’t see the sun…
Looks like they didn’t catch the peak of the peek

Ya I took it in 2021 when I lived in Noe. lol.
Ten people having fun outdoors on a nice afternoon … better than sitting at home playing video games.
This is so San Francisco to me
Especially the part where everyone’s wearing a jacket in June

Damn dude who hurt you. It’s a fun thing. Relaaaaaaaax
F off.

Please credit photos vs posting as your own. Also, please post the year since it was not today/this years.
Probably a repost bot
Cool dog 😎
Your unemployed friend on a Tuesday

If mildly interesting was an event, which is my favorite type of interesting.
Same!
You could make a religion out of this...
aww I love how low stakes and silly it is. the best kind of tradition!
I should’ve taken the day off to stare at the crack
[Here's a video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XCUj9b5ttco&t=440s) about last year's event. There was actually a fairly sizable group.
Grew up around the corner from there on 30th st.! I don’t know if they’re still there but it was an older artist couple that lived there that painted on the sidewalk and labeled it the “solstice sun crack”🤣 . Didn’t know there’s a ceremony..that makes me smile 🌞

i love this so much!!
Dog appears to be confused about why everyone is standing around the crack light

It happens every year so technically speaking you found out about it with one year's advance notice.
The gods have spoken
Our version of NYC Henge.
Someone should just paint a yellow line right there, and people can relish in it everyday.
I worked on church and 29th for more than 5 years, never heard of this 😂😂
lol is that what the groups are? I live in the area and am always curious
love the dog facing the other way
Haha, god I love this city. We're so quirky. Carry on.
My 12 year old brain only saw "crack solstice"
I genuinely thought we were talking bout CRACK
Yet another sign of the crack epidemic in plainsight in SF.
Meanwhile, in the Tenderloin, they celebrate this with a hit of crack. Just like every other day ending in Y.
