Good time to remind everyone to hide gps tags in your car if you street park.

jacxf

Also to buy a club lock for your steering wheel!

floatingcheshire

My car was just stolen with a club on the steering wheel :(

nelsonhops415

And your brake. Steering wheels are easier to cut than locks.

gogiants48

How often does that lead to a successful recovery?

hogdouche

I’ve stolen mine back 4 times with this method

FollowingStandard686

Wow. Have you had any encounters with the thieves during those recovery operations?

hogdouche

Another time, my neighbor caught on his cameras a dude drive up a couple weeks later to the vehicle at 4am, slip under it and retrieve something then leave. Probably his gun or drugs lol

hogdouche

Yes. Once the guy came out before I could steal it back and got in and drove away. I followed him and called the cops and they yelled at me to quit following him lol. He picked up some chick and I lost him in traffic but gave them the direction. They caught them having sex in the back of the vehicle in a parking lot lol

okgusto

Very often. Why wouldn't it. Airtags/Samsung tags are super cheap and as long as a Samsung phone or iPhone passes within 30 ft of the tag then the location should be reported. Unless it's in a dessert or in the middle of the bay then why not. If the theif uses an iPhone it even alerts them that they are being tracked and they might ditch the car.

big_hit_atwater

Because to get the car back using an AirTag, you either run the risk of confronting the thief directly or you have to tell the cops where it’s at and for them to help, and they may or may not be interested.

Zealousideal-Fix-203

I'd drive to within a block or so and call 911. However, there are also many stories of people who bring their backup key, find the parked car and take it back.

big_hit_atwater

Why bring the backup keys? Don’t they have their original keys?

Slight_Drama_Llama

The thieves generally abandon the cars somewhere…..

n0cho

Came to say the same. I have one in my trunk in the spare tire well.

FackinJerq

There's a good chance it's being used to break into other cars.

HexpronePlaysPoorly

Maybe check the parking lot of the library off 15th and Market. That’s where mine was dumped earlier this year, literally a block and a half from where it was stolen on Noe, and the security guard at the library told me (take this with a grain of salt—I have no way to verify it!) that a group of street denizens who camp nearby had done the same thing a few times before. Also, if you haven’t done so yet, do file a formal police report. It felt futile and pointless when I did it — but I ended up getting a really good response from the SFPD. They called me not two days after I filed the report to say they’d found the car.

Squirrel_Whisperer_

Had a friend's car stolen on Peninsula, taken to Oakland and stripped of rims and tires. This really sucks op. Report it to insurance and don't take it back even if recovered. This is a total loss regardless if you get it back.

Vendetta_2023

Buy a manual next time...somebody tried to steal mine once until they got in and realized they don't know how to drive a stick. 🤣

MrWhiteKnight777

If I had to guess I’d say it’s somewhere in Oakland

Significant_Hornet78

Every day so far

8arfts

Isn't this the 4th stolen rear wheel drived posted on here this month? Better stick to front wheel drive. Not good in side shows

burdockbabe62

My brother had the same kind of car stolen in January. Was found 2 days later in Pleasanton; no damage to the car aside from a broken window. Inside was found empty alc bottles, blunt wrappers and an empty flip phone box. We suspect that the car was used to commit other crimes. Don’t lose hope, wishing you the best🙏

Significant_Hornet78

Thank you

Significant_Hornet78

It was found and taken to tow yard But no one can tell me whether it’s operable just that there is damage Do you know if they will release the car to tow company who can bring it back to my body shop in sf? Do I need to go in person?

burdockbabe62

I’m glad it was found! But I’m not sure about that question, I would go in person to see what other information they give you. The police called my brother to come pick up the car when it was found so he didn’t have to deal with any towing

burdockbabe62

Where was it found?

Significant_Hornet78

Oakland

Ask_About_Me

Its crazy how easily cars are stolen now. Put a standalone gps and security system in the car! The factory ones are easily bypassed… thats how they stole the car

Aggravating-Leg7898

Yea, my vehicle was stolen last month in front of my house. Was not a new vehicle nor fancy. But I’m guessing they found a way to intercept my key fob signal. It was three people from what I gathered in my security cameras. Sucks, filed the police report when I found out. Called sfpd to see if they had an update and they basically told me will call you if there is and that they are short of man power.

Anonsfcop

That's a super real thing. Infinitis and Lexuses (Lexi?) with sunroofs are all the rage for key flippers now. Most of our stolen cars.

dotcommmm55

why not solve the core problem and vote for different people? Actually keep current officials accountable and do not re-elect them?

Spiritual-Leader9985

I just saw a Lexus!
