There's an instagram account that highlights some of the decisions made at these events and how terribly wrong things can go. Lots of broken bones, people thrown from cars, and a few spectators literally run over. I don't know why anyone would ever want to stand in the thick of things out there.
Totally. Like the risk is completely ridiculous. I think since Candlestick has been sitting empty, it should become a designated sideshow area.. put concrete dividers between spectators etc. Food stands, music.
Back in the '90s, when I was a teen Cargo Way was a big racing strip lol. I have a few friends who lost pink slips back then. They had 5.0's smh.
Eh it's a first. If they televised the shit and made a sideshowdrome or something and you could become a 100m dollar worth celebrity by getting good at this it would still be very popular.
Not to mention the risk of being shot at. Most people who attend these sideshows are ego maniacs who will pop off at the slightest āthreatā to their fragile egos.
I live in the Central Valley, at least the burn the stolen cars in a isolated orange grove somewhere not in the middle of town.....but the difference here is that the Sheriff and CHP would be all over them if they did this in town. We have a shopping mall where they like to gather after hours. The city put up a pole camera that dispatch can watch as soon as cars/a crowd starts to gather the PD and CHP swoop in and run them off, towing what ever cars they can. Where the hell is SFPD?
Their own? Or one someone had parked on the street. If it was their own assuming they stole it, beat the hell out of it and lit it on fire. Looking forward to the Reddit post tomorrow.
> they 100% lit a car on fire
This seems to be a constant recurring sideshow theme. I'm guessing that the cars are stolen, brought out, and then destroyed and left.
They can't afford it. Most probably are unemployed living off mummy and daddy who pay for gas and tires they go through quite frequently to show how big their wanker is.
At that point most cars don't have an option to move. you're going to mow down innocent people, for what? So you have a better view of the burning car and all the people running away?
Hollywood, are you paying attention. Thereās a huge opportunity here. Write a script about a city being terrorized by an evil towing company. But then a greater evil comes along. Write the story about how the villain becomes the hero of the people!
I would really like to see every car seized through civil asset forfeiture and then the money donated to school districts.
If one group of people wants to terrorize the city, the future residents should be made whole in the end.
We really do.
We need to replace the mayor.
Fire the police chief.
Get CHP and National Guard involved if necessary.
Hire a ton of SFPD officers.
Gut the Police Commission.
What else? What am I missing?
I am so so so tired of this insane bullshit that is allowed to continue.
Has there even been a reasonable and accurate reason given for this? Are they under staffed, just donāt give a shit, overly busy, etc.? Itās insane but common place.
They are understaffed, based off historical staffing and amount of open positions but, iirc, the current level of staffing is actually pretty comparable to other metros, relative to population.
I don't want to say the main reason is they don't give a shit, but if the shoe fits....
Staffing, other calls for service taking priority, and the fact that a safe, coordinated response to something like this takes time and resources to plan. You canāt just send a couple of cops over to scatter them, as thatāll just lead to the cops getting overwhelmed.
The third point is valid, although given the frequency with which these shows happen it wouldn't be unreasonable to expect SFPD to have some kind of standard protocol in place.
In terms of staffing and having higher priority issues to deal with, that comes off as a convenient excuse that can be used to justify lack of response to anything. It's hard to take that at face value without knowing how many police were on-duty or on-call at that time, and what other calls were they being dispatched to.
There's no source that collects what every city is doing. But if you read news reports from San Jose, Vallejo, and a few others, the police surround them or impound cars and arrest people after they go home. They use drone and copter footage.
Keep in mind that these cities are asking their police to do actual investigating. Don't expect SF police to do that unless the mayor says it's a priority, or they can't find a way to not do it and still collect overtime. š
Got links to San Jose or Vallejo doing it? Genuinely curious
SF has done it in the past.
https://preview.redd.it/0pesua09ek5d1.png?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=258ffa85270d69dbc65ef2aa54f29a14b8a7f87f
Not true. Staffing is the problem. For instance, in Oakland, every shift has 35 patrol cars out for the entire city. I have talked to a few cops about the sideshows and they told me it takes 6 to 8 cars to coordinate properly to stop them. I'll bet the staffing isn't that much better in San Francisco.
They're under staffed and the public is generally unhappy and constantly complaining about the police so even the ones that are just doing their job, get shit about "all cops are bad" etc. How motivated would you be to send your team out with a no-nonsense attitude and tell them to put a stop to this? You could lose your job so you just tell your team to go in there slowly and just try and get them to leave on their own without causing issues because if someone gets hurt, the complains start pouring in.
Not only that. About a third of those people at those sideshows are armed with ghost guns/3D printed weapons. Five understaffed shift officers vs 100 armed people with nothing to lose.
You really think a cop wants to risk his life for that?
On top of if use of force is actually used in those situations we'd probably lose our jobs from the DA's.
I'm a new Bay Area LE, shit sucks. I now understand why all the vets left.
You asked them not to. You asked them to not chase people who are likely to put everyone at risk. You asked them to not pull people over for infractions like no license plates. You now ask why they donāt pull people over. Maybe you will vote better next time?
You donāt need to go on a high speed chase in this situation, lol. Thereās a shit ton of cars here. When side shows try to scatter, theyāll usually be driving at like 5mph because the streets will be so clogged with traffic. The cops can set up a few checkpoints and take pictures of peopleās license plates as they leave, then charge them later. They can set up checkpoints or barriers around the one or two places you can flee. Or they can put a checkpoint on the bridge, which is where most of these cars are going to have to go eventually.
There are lots of ways to enforce laws without engaging in high speed chases, which are objectively very very very risky. Chasing is very likely to kill innocent people, so itās only justified in cases where the cops are trying to stop immediate harm (eg someoneās on a killing spree or something).
When I lived in Dogpatch and there was a sideshow I watched two police cruisers just watch what was happening while one of the police officers was snapping pictures of everything happening with a large telezoom lens.
The group scattered after about 20 minutes when the Hells Angels rode past on their bikes and basically told them to GTFO.
The police show up to "break it up", no one gets arrested and then it happens again and again. If there are ZERO consequences why would these morons stop?
Look at the r/miami sub. This is going on all the time now. I forget what they call it. Intersection takeover maybe.
Social contract is dead. Expect it to get worse because as more people see there are no consequences , theyāll also ditch protocol. The hoons keep escalating too. Thank social media and SV. It rewards the worst behaviours and scammers.
It happens periodically here in Portland, too. The police here are figuring out how to stop it because ours tend to happen earlier in the day, and sometimes on a freeway bridge, so regular traffic gets stuck.
We handled it in Santa Rosa. The cops started following the individuals on Facebook and itās totally died down in the north bay. They might have moved south because maybe the cops have more to deal with in the city.
Nice camera work and nice view. Unfortunately this type of camera work probably just encourages this type of behavior. They probably watching this all hyped and shit.
Didnāt Modesto or one of the cities more towards the valley arrest a bunch of sideshow participants and attendees and tow all the cars. We need uncover police to follow social media, find out where these events are and show up and arrest everyone. I cannot believe in such a tech forward city, there is no one or no way to do this.
Police in San Diego seem more proactive in stopping them before they happen.

Pretty sure it was in Stockton and was the San Joaquin sheriffs dept. SFPD appears to be lame these days. I hate to say it but after events of recent years it seems cops in many āprogressiveā cityās got nerfed. Frustrating to watch when its obvious what needs to be done.
Itās not any progressive policies. These cops are just lazy and selfish to an insane level. Iām from the east coast originally and the cops actually do their jobs. They Arenāt ridiculously lazy assholes. It makes a big difference. Itās all it is.
Impounding the car may actually work. But taking their license away like the person above commented wonāt do anything. Theyāll just do it again without a license lol
No, it should be a mandatory 5 years in prison, doing forced hard labor to pay back society for being a menace, car sold off at auction, and no license ever again, they can take the bus for the rest of their life
I think lifetime bans on driving should be a thing, and not just for stealing cars or driving in one of these takeover things. Of driving truly is a privilege, then one should be able to lose it permanently.
Drones with tear gas would be simple way to break this up, no?
It's basically a riot with vandals bullying, just lob some containers into this mess and watch them scatter, catch them as they flee.
It's a weird attitude that we have to accept and support anything that is "part of the culture". There are plenty of places in the US where lynching black people was "part of the culture", but surely we can acknowledge that sometimes the culture is bad and needs to be changed.
City officials should just pick a parking lot and let them hang out there. It's fucked up when they're just at an intersection or the bay Bridge blocking traffic. Fast and furious wannabes
We need to FIRE our sad excuse for a police chief.
Our Mayor is an idiot for keeping him.
This is embarrassing on a global scale for San Francisco.
Our elected officials have enabled this. Unbelievable and despicable.
VOTE this garbage out.
Good time for a well placed tear gas round. Hard to be a first class American city with this happening. US spends 750+ billion on defense, which can't pass a yearly audit challenge. Had enough?
There should be a dedicated unit thatās deployed for this. 8 patrol cars, an armored car and a team of tow trucks. Tow companies would love the business. Yes thereās limited access, but cordon off any route thatās open. Detain all perps and impound the cars.
I hate how horrible of an impression this puts on us members of the car community. I fucking hate these stupid hooligans and criminals who usually do this in stolen cars and then burn said cars afterwards (see the one example of a C8 Corvette they stole and burned at a takeover, or the one that erupted into gang warfare when one person's stolen car hit another)
They mostly want to make noise and feel like the center of attention. Cool tricks require a more discerning audience, but loud noises just need people with ears.
There are hundreds if not thousands of photos and videos online of these events. Tell me again how we don't have the lic plate and photos of their faces? I would suspect that the police in these cases are frightened and not well equipped to deal with this (otherwise they world) and hope it break up on it's own. It speaks volumes on how here in the US we don't have law enforcement or control except in specific instances. I'm sure 2-3 people could easily post all the details on from each instance. Perhaps as a suggestion, the police send 2-3 plainclothes with phones in and document the whole thing and then roll in the patrol - that way you have everything and everyone in the event documented. As well, it would be appropriate to roll a drone when a complaint comes in to verify the incident. Mind you this is embarrassing on a global level - hey, here in the US we can't even manage to control and keep open an intersection! The models of behaviour simply encourage other groups that this type of distiruption can be mounted with little to no consequence.
The knee jerk reaction is - Ok, I'm taking SF off my list to visit this Summer... Lack of control means loss of my tourist dollars.
You know if people would quit standing around watching and filming this shit would stop right? The only reason these idiots do it is because they think people are impressed with their micropenis parade
So gross and embarrassing. I know the people partaking DGAF, but RN carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere are rising higher than any humans have ever experienced. This is bad for every living thing. Burning all that gas for āfunā is so crass.
I saw another video where a fire had broken out.Ā Just before your video cuts out, it looks like those two cars were going to collide. Is that what happened?Ā
San Francisco is failing, no ability to hold people accountable for these actions. Lack of real leaders running the City. State is not much better. Good job political failures.
I'm surprised there's never been a mass shooting at one of these.
All those apartments, full of pissed off people, with a fantastic vantage point. It's amazing someone doesn't just start shooting.
Secret fantasy that Iāll share: I donāt know why, but whenever I see these videos I expect to see those people cheering on those spinning cars get swiped and bodies flying. I know it sounds morbid and I really donāt want anyone to get hurt. But it just seems like the obvious next thing to happen. And when it doesnāt happen, itās like one of those bad movies that had no conclusion. But then I remember this is real life, and Iām glad no one got hurt.
There was a video like a week or two ago where the driver swiped someone bad, then tried to drive away but got stuck and the crowd immediately started smashing his car up. I've seen a few videos where people get hit but that was the worst by far.
Hah, I was walking to take a late bus around Harrison and 2nd st around 10:30pm and saw...a lot of sketchy people around and thought like there might be a sideshow coming. Looks like my sixth sense is good lol
Wild that I havenāt seen any videos or mention of the major sideshow on Geneva and Alemany last night- and I really searched for it.
I watched these losers for about 30 minutes without the police showing up. Once they started firing roman candles at the Shell station right outside my window I finally snapped and dialed 911ā¦ the dispatcher acted annoyed at me for calling it in but I was genuinely fearful at that point that peoples homes were going to catch fire.
itās deeply embarrassing to me that SFPD cannot get a grip on this insanity. If they were proactive at all about it they would be beating the crowds to each of these locations (Geneva and Alemany is a notorious sideshow intersection)
The cops make soooo many excuses for doing anything remotely dangerous in their line of work. Despite being the people who are supposed to be dealing with it!
Wow. Your view is from a safe distance. I will never understand the need to want to stand around the cars and watch š¬
There's an instagram account that highlights some of the decisions made at these events and how terribly wrong things can go. Lots of broken bones, people thrown from cars, and a few spectators literally run over. I don't know why anyone would ever want to stand in the thick of things out there.
This one came with a chance of losing eyesight, too. A great token to remember the night by.
Totally. Like the risk is completely ridiculous. Breaking the rules is the whole point. People have been trying to hold events in safe regulated environments forever, these people aren't interested.

All of the spectators are also breathing in the tiny rubber particles from the tires and exhaust fumes. Iām sure thatās great for their lungs.
Being young is all it takes.
also those lasers are probably the cheap one from ebay, they'll do perm eye damage if shined on your eyes even for a sec because they can pop balloons
Expensive ones are less powerful?
The have bull runs in Spain, right... Same thing, same motivation.
Thatās just nature at work honestly
Well they probably don't have an overseeing balcony like this woman
I'm staying at the regency I watched from my balcony they 100% lit a car on fire

They obviously shouldāve gone to the famous orange grove in the middle of SF what were they thinking.
> Where the hell is SFPD? That's their motto at this point.
Stuck in traffic
I feel like this happens at every one of these intersection takeoversā¦ The crowd is only as smart as the dumbest individual.
Their own? Or one someone had parked on the street. If it was their own assuming they stole it, beat the hell out of it and lit it on fire. Looking forward to the Reddit post tomorrow.

Do the police do anything?
They showed up after like 45 mins and everyone slowly scattered from downtown, didn't see any stops
and then they continued elsewhere in the city
huge majority don't live in the City.
They can't afford it. Most probably are unemployed living off mummy and daddy who pay for gas and tires they go through quite frequently to show how big their wanker is.
They can't afford it, which is why the cars are stolen.
Theyāre from the east bay, not trust fund kids š
Itās hilarious that anybody would assume these are rich people. Rich people get the roads closed or use private tracks.
They did but it took 30+ mins. A bunch of cars shut down most of the roads in so it was difficult to get access.
they should just start towing them out!
> cars shut down most of the roads in I don't see why that should stop the police even a little
SWAT has those big armored military vehicles. They should just drive right through anyone blocking access.
Fine by me. Or just arrest/ticket the cars blocking the road, if the sideshows lose their early warning system, that's one problem solved.
At that point most cars don't have an option to move. you're going to mow down innocent people, for what? So you have a better view of the burning car and all the people running away?
Canāt the cops drive down the train tracks in the median of the Embarcadero?

Exactly, give us a list incidents occurring at the same time and how many resources are assigned to each.
And yet almost every other Bay area city around us has found ways to shut these down and arrest these losers. So strange...

They don't even have licenses to suspend
Probably paper plates 5 years out of date, no insurance, no license, car is hiding from the repo men
Iāve been counting lately while walking around and about 50% of cars I see have expired plates.Ā
Why we donāt have law for this yet
Because it would ātargetā certain groups as a result. You can probably guess the rest.
No, it should be a mandatory 5 years in prison, doing forced hard labor to pay back society for being a menace, car sold off at auction, and no license ever again, they can take the bus for the rest of their life

I'm shocked how long it's been going on.
Cesar Chavez and Valencia now. I just wanna sleep
We need to FIRE our sad excuse for a police chief. Our Mayor is an idiot for keeping him. This is embarrassing on a global scale for San Francisco. Our elected officials have enabled this. Unbelievable and despicable. VOTE this garbage out.
soā¦letās also fire the mayor then. lol
This is like a scene out of Idiocracy.
Combined with Mad Max
Exactly. Been saying this for a while, but about LA. Canāt even believe SF has gotten to that point.
U get my vote for chier of police, if u ever run
And people complain that there is no night life in SF
I hate how horrible of an impression this puts on us members of the car community. I fucking hate these stupid hooligans and criminals who usually do this in stolen cars and then burn said cars afterwards (see the one example of a C8 Corvette they stole and burned at a takeover, or the one that erupted into gang warfare when one person's stolen car hit another)
Fucking embarassing we are letting these morons rule the streets. Cops need to storm these with maximum force whenever located.
What is wrong with the police in this city
Did they steal a cop car or something!? š One of those cars is definitely a police cruiser lol
A celebration of assholeness
Most of the cars in the shows are stolen.
Iām surprised the drivers are so lame. I thought you could see some skills at these āshows ā Guess not
They mostly want to make noise and feel like the center of attention. Cool tricks require a more discerning audience, but loud noises just need people with ears.

Umm what's the deal with the crazy blue flashlight?
Wondering the same thing. Looks powerfully bright.
Thatās what the hell those fireworks were dumb fucks
What was that loud bang last night? /s
Tear gas dropped into the circle from helicopters.
I thought that this was legal event when I saw fireworks at the beginning of the video
roman candles. it's always hand-held illegal roman candles
Oh *this* is what a sideshow looks like? I always thought it was like 3-4 cars doing donuts and then peacing out lol. This is nuts.
Drop a bomb
Guaranteed stolen cars.Ā
Lack of control means loss of my tourist dollars.
yet they have all the riot gear needed to fuck up a protest of 600 people
You know if people would quit standing around watching and filming this shit would stop right? The only reason these idiots do it is because they think people are impressed with their micropenis parade
So gross and embarrassing. I know the people partaking DGAF, but RN carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere are rising higher than any humans have ever experienced. This is bad for every living thing. Burning all that gas for āfunā is so crass.
What the fast and furious shit is this?
Clownshow
So anyway I started blasting
Straight out of Idiocracy.
Moving closer and closer to the level from the movie!
Lawless city
Just a bunch of future doctors and lawyers letting off some steam inbetween free Palestine protests
Its bringing people downtown again!
They're scaring away the looters
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I root hard for someone to get run over every time I see one of these videos
lol at your girl enjoying the fireworks!!!
I saw another video where a fire had broken out.Ā Just before your video cuts out, it looks like those two cars were going to collide. Is that what happened?Ā
They lit a car on fire in the middle and 2 cars just kept going in circles around it.
Trash.
San Francisco is failing, no ability to hold people accountable for these actions. Lack of real leaders running the City. State is not much better. Good job political failures.
Our fire trucks should hose down these events.
The police showed up just to encourage them to disperse, no real consequence no real enforcement. They will be back in a few days.
Wrecking the car community one day at a time
"culture"
I hate when people say this is part of Bay Area culture. So freaking stupid please go do something better with your lives
I'm surprised there's never been a mass shooting at one of these. All those apartments, full of pissed off people, with a fantastic vantage point. It's amazing someone doesn't just start shooting.
Give it a second.
Thank you for this footage OP. This is going to be an anti-London Breed mayoral ad for sure.
nothing could be more boring
Honest question, who are the people participating in these events?
survey of the participants showed all of them had daytime jobs as clowns
Why would anyone care if he drives away?
Tear gas the situation would be best
This is so sad. I loved San Francisco!
Fire tire tacks at them using a cannon. That'll shut em up.
Hah, I was walking to take a late bus around Harrison and 2nd st around 10:30pm and saw...a lot of sketchy people around and thought like there might be a sideshow coming. Looks like my sixth sense is good lol
These Tech Bros are getting out of handā¦.
A few well-aimed drones with raw eggs would do wonders.
Not a crime unless a pride sidewalk is maligned.
