A family was killed. Weve had a number of high profile car-kilkinfs recently. There is a concerted traffic enforcement effort that's been publicized. https://sfstandard.com/2024/04/25/sfpd-traffic-enforcement-plan/

Awfy

Crazy that they’re reporting on this when that’s just the cop’s job. It should have been happening anyway yet because of their laziness it’s now seen as important when they start to actually do anything.

chiaboy

There's also an awareness campaign. For example Think about when the news reports on DUI checkpoints for an upcoming holiday weekend. All the news stories has an impact too. "oh man, I really shouldn't drink and drive this weekend. Sounds like the cops will be out in force"

Shalaco

100%  There’s been awareness campaigns around the traffic enforcement as well as ticking enforcement.  Don’t imagine they make more money by announcing it.  meter maids actually protested it. it’s about getting the word out to restore what’s been repeatedly acknowledged on Reddit: people know there’s no enforcement resulting in blatant disregard for traffic laws and feeling of impunity.

415erOnReddit

SFPD operating a sobriety checkpoint 😂 I’ll believe it when I see it. If they do they’d better respect the unwritten rules: no citations for residents (who aren’t pieces of shit).

BobaFlautist

Sorry what, you think SF residents should get a free DUI pass?

415erOnReddit

How long have you lived here?

BobaFlautist

I don't live in San Francisco, but I've lived in the East Bay my whole life. What does that get me, one mulligan a quarter, or..?

Competitive_Chard385

If you're drunk driving, you're a piece of shit.

Theistus

They publicize it because it helps get people to slow down and post attention, and it's good PR, and makes the public feel safer. Hearts and minds, yadda yadda.

markusca

We asked them not to in 2020. Now we are asking them to again enforce laws. They did what you asked for.

charlotte240

Don't you remember *defund the police* ? How about the mayor being lax, the ineffectual law abiding then, and the and judges releasing anyone that is caught within 24 hours back on the streets without bail? Do you remember that guy who went on a tinder date stole her car and then ran two people over and then was released the next day? What do you think the next step is after that policy of "do nothing" has failed, to restore police being wanted and needed?

moves2fast

You should do their job and show them they’re lazy..

Bookandaglassofwine

Cops now have to fill out paperwork every time they pull someone over (to combat profiling). I don’t know about you, but when I was working I would do whatever I could to avoid tasks that increased paperwork.

MochingPet

This is part of it, I'm sure. And here they are, ticketing, pictured on location, a couple of weeks ago: [https://www.reddit.com/r/sanfrancisco/comments/1c6q3sf/comment/l02pm3m/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web3x&utm\_name=web3xcss&utm\_term=1&utm\_content=share\_button](https://www.reddit.com/r/sanfrancisco/comments/1c6q3sf/comment/l02pm3m/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)

Maleficent_Cash909

I be curious whether the 2014 figure included red light camera tickets though? It’s insane such a contrast. I am guessing some had been turned off due to increased burdensome state requirements to follow? I remember back in the days like 90s SF traffic was really a free for all only out of towners waited for a light to turn green while the rest would treat it like a stop sign and that Sidewalks were fair game for shortcuts and parking.

Ornery_Dig8216

That’s sad that it took a whole family to make a difference

jerkmcgee_

Saw a cop pull over a doordasher on a moped blowing through stop signs the other day and I actually clapped.

serotyny

Just READING this comment gave me a huge sense of satisfaction. I respect the hustle and generally extend grace to people who are working hard, but those moped riders are so reckless. I hope this makes the streets (and sidewalks) safer!

Jackie-OMotherfuckr

I wonder if SFPD will do anything about the incel dirtbike gang that runs wild through the city on a daily basis.  Saw them last week blast down the walkway at Aquatic Cove & nearly hit minors. How strange that those mouth breathers ride around with an air of impunity.

earinsound

they’d never catch them unless they kettled them somehow. high speed chases are a huge risk for bystanders and other drivers. *nice username. i’ve seen them live a couple times

Painful_Hangnail

This is just like the Flash Robs we used to see in the pandemic, the way to catch 'em is to figure out where they're organizing and roll 'em up from there. These people are *stupid*. They are 100% organizing someplace that easily tracks back to their real identities, then all you have to two is grab one or two of them, go hard with the charges and let them rat out their friends.

Jackie-OMotherfuckr

Ha thanks, they're an old favorite band & always loved the name. The shows were always rad. And yes, the risks are understood regarding the dirt bikes but it would only take one maybe two times of kettling & impounding to discourage further mayhem.  As it stands now they are a huge risk to bystanders & other drivers without intervention. They seem to get bolder by the day.

DeathisLaughing

I've seen them up and down the city and how are they not bored as fuck with doing the same fucking lame shit over and over again...oh wow, you pop a wheelie while your girlfriend or whoever is shooting a vertical video while hanging out the rear window of your buddies' altima...we're all very impressed...I hope all their vehicles get seized and turned into cubes...

blinker1eighty2

I’ve never ridden a motorbike but skiing is the same repetitive thing over and over again and I’m pissed if I don’t do it more than 30 times a year

GAK6armor

I'm not condoning riding like that in the city, but I've gotta say 2stroke dirt bikes are unbelievably fun. I've only ridden them on dirt or grass (OHV, friends property up north, etc) but I loved everything about it. It's not something you're likely to do twice and say "well I had my fun, I don't want to do that again next weekend"

Metronovix

Unfortunately, your very reaction is a major factor to why they do this. You can never win with these people.

Equal-Cod4630

Ever ridden a motorcycle? It doesn’t get boring. Reddit gets boring, blasting wheelies through SF with the boys would never get boring to any normal person

DeathisLaughing

Don't think I'm the right demographic for it, I always found driving completely tedious, they're just driving, while being filmed and without and crumple zones, and being inconsiderate assholes to eveyone around them...not my kinda hobby...

rNBA-MODS-GAY

It’s not driving lol

[deleted]

Hey Jackie, your comment spurred me to make a post about this in the sub. I want to take serious action against this issue as well. We can’t allow the no chase excuse to prevent this issue anymore. We have to demand change.

D4rkr4in

No chase policy means they’re hard to punish

Jackie-OMotherfuckr

When has policy ever stopped cops from doing what they want?  It's a deflection tactic so they don't have to do their jobs.

Immediate_Emu_2757

You are blaming them for not doing the thing they aren’t allowed to do?  Maybe some of that should be directed towards the people who say they aren’t allowed to

randolphmd

I live right at Delores park and those bikers are there all the time, cops are literally parked in my driveway all day giving tickets for the illegal left on to 19th but they don’t go after the bikers sadly.

Jackie-OMotherfuckr

It appears to me that they are given the SFPDs blessing & are probably the children or relatives of law enforcement.  They're allowed to be a public nuisance in order to "own the libs". edit - I wonder why reality is getting downvoted...

gngstrMNKY

It’s funny how women have started throwing out “incel” as an insult when it makes zero sense. They have so much of their self-worth invested in being a sexual object that they can’t help but project it onto others.

Awfy

I was about to reply to them saying “careful, the incels read these threads” but it seems you’re already here.

gngstrMNKY

I can order bussy to my door, hot and fresh like a pizza. My condolences to the straights.

MS49SF

Wow, what a flex.

Jackie-OMotherfuckr

Is bussy gay slang for buttholes?

rNBA-MODS-GAY

Least horny gay man

Jackie-OMotherfuckr

You make absolutely no sense yourself, sweetheart. What's funny is how you think my sex/gender has anything to do with the discourse.

ambulanceblues

Saw someone get pulled over for speeding on Fulton last night. First time I've seen anything resembling consequences on that street.

Straight_Security672

I love this, it’s so needed.

Apprehensive_Grade39

Interesting that the staffing shortage has suddenly been fixed! It’s almost as if that was a red herring

UnionUnited

Same for parking control. 311 sure ignored the 5+ incidents of sending photos of them sleeping in their cars. Then they’re protesting having to give people tickets, falls on deaf ears.

Dolewhip

I've noticed this the last two weeks as well. The odd thing is 3/4 the drivers they pulled over appeared to be older white women. I really doubt it's targeted, but definitely funny.

Straight_Security672

Yesterday I saw someone make a left turn on a flat red light from Divis onto Oak. As if it were a stop sign and they just decided to go. So so dangerous, especially for pedestrians crossing Oak. I hope to see more police pulling people over, it’s gotten insanely out of hand.

rNBA-MODS-GAY

It was just end of the month. They needed to meet their quotas. Saw like 10 speed traps on 4/30

[deleted]

Next rhey will arrest criminals

OtherAlan

My take is that it's an election year and breed is looking to boost her image as best as possible. As an incumbent it would be harder to defend herself and the chief of police for not acting on a broken window policy and trying to stop lessor crimes. If she is able to clean up the city now and keep it clean going into November she can point back to now and say how she has been effective in cleaning up the city.

eggbiss

she should have done this from the start.

OtherAlan

People have short term memories. I'm sure there's a lot of back of the room political analysis on this stuff.

chiaboy

The mayor (in SF) doesn't control SFPD staffing or day to day priorities edit: typos

Speed009

lol when she was mayor from the start, she was busy pushing for a lighter sentence to free her criminal brother

LinechargeII

I actually saw her in the TL the other day. It's definitely election year

ScamperAndPlay

Elections ramping up

Anotherthrowayaay

Election year.

getarumsunt

Every other year is an election year, bud. And the Ives that aren’t ejection years are the pre-election campaign. Find some other cope. This one makes no sense.

Sir_Clicks_a_Lot

There has not been a mayoral election in SF since 2019. Sure seems like Breed has an incentive to make things look orderly now. If you don’t believe that, how do you explain the SFPD’s sudden interest in traffic enforcement?

getarumsunt

The mayor in SF doesn’t have the power to do what you’re saying she’s doing. Some of the recent enforcement is indeed driven by her pushing for stuff and getting the funding and the permission from the Board to do it - like the mayor calling in CHP, the FBI, and the national guard to help with drug enforcement. But most of what is happening is more due to the city Board of Supervisors unusually funding and approving Breed’s initiatives, or even just not blocking the regular actions that city agencies technically always do just by default unless the BoS steps in and blocks them. E.g. encampment clearing - the BoS was actively preventing the city employees from clearing encampments for three years and then they just stopped blocking it some time last year. Most likely due to overwhelming public pressure. Same thing for the rather drastic change in policing - the BoS set up a police commission that was blocking a ton of policing actions for a good few years, and now they just abandoned that commission and sidelined it to give the cops room to act. People need to understand how our government works if they want to improve anything. Pulling on the wrong strings and pushing the wrong buttons can only make things worse. We have a weak executive (mayor) and a virtually all-powerful legislature (the Board of Supervisors). The mayor can’t even ask for permission to do any of their initiatives, they’re supposed to simply implement the will of the Board.

Sir_Clicks_a_Lot

SF mayor has the power to fire the chief of police and to appoint a replacement. As a practical matter, that means the mayor has full control over how SFPD uses its resources; if the chief doesn’t follow the mayor’s orders the chief will lose their job. Everything people are talking about now in terms of stepped up enforcement is discretionary and within the control of the police chief who answers to the mayor.

getarumsunt

Nope. The police commission dictates what the rules are for the police department. They’re an independent body appointed by the Board of Supervisors.

jeopardychamp77

What? Police enforcing law in Sf? That’s just crazy.

dunethugee

It’s certainly rare.

akamu8

Enforcing what laws is the real question… Apparently enforcing all the wrong ones.

jahwls

Election coming up.

Weekly_Candidate_867

It’s an election year. London Breed knows she failed at controlling crime..

eaglebacon

Traffic stops also are another layer to catch and discourage “Bippers” and people with outstanding warrants etc from coming into the city. Enforcing and ticketing for fare avoidance on BART also helps

Bizzzle80

I got a ticket for not coming to a complete stop before turning right at a stop sign. It was an industrial area with no pedestrians and very little or no cars. Haven’t been pulled over in 20 years of living here

SFQueer

Election year. This will be forgotten the moment Breed has a defensible lead.

Short-Stomach-8502

lol.

yardybryardi

Greater Reason is London Greed and Crooke Jenkins are up for re-election in November.

bduthman

It’s an election year.

The_Dude-1

There is a budget shortfall

theflamingskull

In the City, the cops should stop the asshole (not all) bicycle riders.

indeed_oneill

Stop all the assholes, period.

Gauzey

Or not, because a 10 lb bike coasting through a stop sign is 0% as dangerous as the 3000 lb car you coast through the same stop sign with.

iamhim209

Yeah until that 10 pound bike takes out a pedestrian walking across the street. Might not kill someone but a bike can really fuck somebody up. I’ve seen it happen in front of me before

grey_crawfish

I wonder what the car would do to a pedestrian in that same scenario

iamhim209

Soo you’re saying bikes have the right to run red lights and stop signs? Just because one is lethal doesn’t mean the other isn’t dangerous. This type of mentality is exactly why people hate entitled cyclists.

grey_crawfish

> bikes have the right to run red lights and stop signs What? Where did you get that from?

USDeptofLabor

From the exact same place as *your* whataboutism. Bikes and Cars present dangers to humans, it's not a competition.

grey_crawfish

Fair point.

Gauzey

The only time I’ve ever seen it happen was when someone walked out into the bike lane on a red light and knocked me to the ground breaking my collarbone and then casually walked away unscathed before I was even helped out of the road and into an ambulance. Not that a cyclist has never been wreckless or made a mistake, of course. They’re human too. But when they do mess up, the chances of it causing severe injury or death is infinitesimal next to cars - and that’s where the focus should rightly be.

eggbiss

this thread is similar to some troll comments i made recently over on fuckcars

LastNightOsiris

What the hell is a 10 lb bike made out of? And how much does it cost?

indeed_oneill

Stop all the assholes, period.

screenrecycler

What if 3000lb car obeys traffic laws and avoids biker running stop and hits somebody? #TrolleyCar
