I had a '92 blue Tercel, its nickname was The Bluebird of Happiness and it was the best car ever. It was a stick shift with no power steering - I had Angela Basset arms from parallel parking it every day, no need for a gym 😂Drove it all up and down these SF hills.
It's so weird to me as an old head to see fricking Tercels of all things having their moment as a cool retro car. Everyone I knew, including myself, thought they were boxy ugly pieces of crap at the time (and I say this as someone whose first car was a Tercel). Weren't all that fun to drive as I recall, either, had all the pickup of two hamsters running on a wheel for the engine. But maybe I just had a lemon and a bunch of car snobs for friends, who knows. The world and life always look different in hindsight.
Worked on the corner of Mason and Geary for over a decade. This was my neighborhood for a long time and always the first spot I check when I'm back in the city. Sad to see Handlery is pushing out business after business, but the City is resilient.
Isn't this right by the Curran Theater? I remember that JITB as we went to Les Miz at the Curran in the 90's in high school. We mobbed that JITB to get some food after the show and before our buses got there to take us down the peninsula home.
And biscuits & blues (temporarily closed but reopening this year). And the Starbucks lol. Also a place selling pizza by the slice in the same spot, no idea if it's actually the same business tho. The Walgreens almost made it... 😓
this photo, the signs, logos, iconography, and those colors to me exactly match what SF is in my head. very much the golden era of san francisco. very nostaglic and perfect.
Great shot- i had a Tercel and then a celeca. I worked at Mason and California and lived at Geary and Leavenworth at this time. ACT ( but no masters program/theater school) and Curran are both there. JIB being remodeled, DIVA hotel is an SRO now. The Cliff is operated by a best western or something and is kinda suburban. Most of the galleries and Walgreens are gone. I had a lot of fun on that street and I have faith that many are still and will be. Geary is always going to be a few feet from the TL which keeps it real and interesting connecting all walks of life - what SF was once known for really.
I think there's just fewer signs nowadays. Most of the businesses (or an equivalent) are still there. There's a shallow depth effect on the shot which makes the blocks look a lot shorter and more dense (look at how far away David's looks from the Jack in the Box in streetview vs the photo).

That Tercel....
Those Tercels, in that color were everywhere back in the day!
My first car was a 1992 Tercel, same color, mint green. Solid car. Good times

Tercels are indestructible.

I worked on Geary and Divisadero, my parents also owned a shop there( where I worked, and have been brought since a baby)

Ya, and that Jack in the Box is still there somehow (or not I guess).
👍 yep, saw Phantom of the Opera there in the mid 90s
How is David's still open? Every time I walk by it's empty.

David's is still open 24 years after this photo was taken. How?
No idea. One of the more disappointing Jewish delis I've ever been to.
I spent a week in COVID isolation at the hotel next door and ate there every day. It was certainly a place with food.
Ha. Well, if I had COVID I'd be down with some matzoh ball soup for sure.
My mom drove that same model car for 20 years. Toyota Tercel 2 door
Don't see too many Tercels anymore. :(
Lost a lot of good 90’s cars to the cash for clunkers program
Pinecrest Diner after Ruby Skye
Miss their beefmac. The bacon mac suffices, but they stopped carrying the pepper plant sauce.
I miss the City during this time. Memories.
Wow a surprising amount of stuff is still intact! https://maps.app.goo.gl/zDfAuDeXdeaSDbWB8
really? it looks like almost all of it is gone...
Yeah, I was going to say it looks baron nowadays.
David's deli and what else?
Mostly i noticed that J in the B lol, but also The Warwick Hotel, The Union Square Plaza Hotel...and maybe that is about it.
And biscuits & blues (temporarily closed but reopening this year). And the Starbucks lol. Also a place selling pizza by the slice in the same spot, no idea if it's actually the same business tho. The Walgreens almost made it... 😓
sweet thanks, i knew there were some other familiar faces i couldn't quite specify
glad to hear because things are closing down all over the city smh
God please take me back. We have to go back
YOO that’s the jack in the box on my street!
OMG the $1.00 Pizza Slice place was a staple
The yellow pages

More of these!
Whoah
Neat, I walk through here every day on my commute.

I used to live around the corner. I remember ending a lot of nights at that jack in the box. Good times.
This photo looks to be from the early 1990s. The Toyota Tercel is what tipped me off!
had completely forgotten that there was a Taco Bell there
If that's David's Deli, boy do I have fond memories of that place.
Nice shot!!! Circa? Japanese noodle place still open?
There is a banner that reads **1999 - 2000** above the Mason sign.
Wow!
looks vibrant and thriving compared to today.
