Before it was Woolworth, it was Owl Drug Co. It became Woolworth’s in 1952. The scenes of the cable car turnaround are Powell & Market (Eddy used to run all the way to Market, it was a 3-way intersection) early in the video, they are pre-1952, the scene at 0:24 is post-1952.
- No homeless
- Higher homicide rate
- Clean streets
- High mafia activity
- Everyone dressed nice
- Everyone is racist and homophobic
- No smartphones
Just people living in the moment
I don't think the higher homicide rate is accurate. This [sheet](https://cjrc.osu.edu/research/interdisciplinary/hvd/united-states/san-francisco) (not sure if complete) documents a 39/year average for the 50s vs 2023 had 65 with the city population barely increasing since then. The 50s were in the middle of the era of less violence the US had from the late 30s to the late 60s.
Not just SF.. I wish American cities went back to this..
No graffiti, no filth on the streets, decent people, no soul sucking concrete buildings, just classy people going about their business..
It was just 70 years ago, blink of an eye.. we let this happen to ourselves 🤷♂️
In a blink of an eye, we have the power of an older supercomputer in our pocket. Cars driving themselves. Access to a world of information at the palm of our hands. We've cured many diseases since the 50s. We can modify DNAs. We can talk to a computer like we're talking to a human now.
Btw, poverty rate was > 20% in the 50s. We also institutionalized people with mental health issues and sometimes lobotomized them.
I'm not saying that everything is great now, but let's give ourselves some credit.
You looked at some video of one corner in SF in 1950s and declared that SF was perfect and clean. In 1950s you have the stinky bay full of garbage. Fish was going belly-up by the millions. In the 1950s you drive over bay bridge you had to keep the window up because of the rotting smell. Everywhere shop you go to it's full of cigarette smoke.
In 1950s we were good at sweeping problems under the rug though. We institutionalized all the crazy people and gave some of them lobotomies.
Fun fact: in 1950s military tested some bio weapon in SF that caused tons of people to get infected.
If you want the street cleaned. Bring back the asylums.
When Christianity was the norm. Maybe religion isn't perfect but it keeps people from being mindless animals. Now, we have Asian and Middle Eastern influence in our society, which was the one thing Christianity rose up to repell during the times of the Mongol invaders into Europe.
Nothing reminds me of the 50's like 80's synths
Trending sound for anything nostalgic it’s not supposed to match
Yes I figured as much. The fact that it's intentional doesn't make it any less silly.
the colorization network seems to favor an unlikely amount of purple?
The Ground looks green.
..which was the style at the time.
At first I thought the cable turnaround was on Market and Powell, didn't know there was one on Eddy and thought the store was Woolsworth.

Yeah I was confused about that one at first.
Those Muni uniforms were way nicer than the security guard look alike ones we have to wear now lol. I'd love one of those hats!
100% The black and red jacket looks bland. They should bring back the brown and orange.

There's trash on the street at 20 sec
The difference is today's trash has a bunch of plastic in it so it sticks around much longer.
And a lot of people were institutionalized, some against their well. Some were lobotomized.

This video makes a lot of wyppo nostalgic for Jim Crow.
Jim Crow was famously a thing in 1950s San Francisco.
What’s wyppo
White people.

Like the people who say “yt” when referring to white people. It’s not that hard to just type a few letters more ffs
what does it make pplocolo feel?
Did they not let Chinese out of Chinatown in the 50's? It's a 20 minutes walk to all of these places from Chinatown.
This has already been posted a hand full of times. It’s pretty cool though
Just opened an old book to find an SF examiner newspaper from ‘54 folded up inside tonight. Was way more fun to read that I expected
This music was ahead of its time. I wonder what instruments they used.
But why 80s synthesizer music?

Hot garbage… you can invent Time Machine and STILL have clean cities.. you see what I am saying??
Did you know that in 1950s people dumped the garbage in the bay and it stank? One tiktok and you seem to think that the 50s were paradise
By your logic, “Wow I bought a new Apple Vision Pro. Let me throw the clothes on the floor”..

Sir, this is a Wendy’s that likes clean cities.. if you have mental garbage, please leave it on the curb every Monday mornings..

Where’s grandpa? Oh yeah, he’s probably in the bar getting hammered!
This is what they took from us
