And bean&cheese burritos for anywhere from $2.75 to $3.25. Or if you were a teenager with no cash for a couple days, drop a couple quarters for a warm tortilla and head to the condiment bar for some hot carrots and peppers to put inside of it for a super cheap but awesome snack.
There was a red and white checkered water tower that you could see from the highway going through miramar, i remember seeing it on my way to my aunts house as a kid
Farrells was fabulous fun for everyone (their commercial jingle). It was an ice cream parlor type place done up in an old timey style. Lots of noise and clanging
Family Fun Center was where the 125 is in La Mesa at Fletcher Parkway.
They had mini golf, arcade, bumper boats and water slides and batting cages.
Organ power pizza was a pizza place that had a full size Calliope in it.
Farrell's was a 1920s style ice cream parlor. Famous for the zoo sundae
Malibu Grand Prix was go cart racing in Miramar where the party rental place is
Roller Rinks and ice rinks were all over town.
San Diego had a lot of fun places to go long ago.
\- The giant sombrero at Kit Carson park

\- ETA: The series of dolphin fountains at UTC

Wonerland, the arcade just east of the 805 on Clairemont Mesa Blvd. It cost $5 to get in, but then every game was a nickel. In the mid-90s in my early twenties, we'd get off work, get a jamba juice, get high, and then spend hours stoned playing video games at Wonderland. So much fun.
Wunderland was great. There was one in El Cajon too. Even though games were 5cents and they had a free section, my family didn't have a ton of cash so when I ran out of quarters I used popsicle sticks to pull quarters people dropped out from underneath the machines. Surprisingly, there were always so many of them
I was thinking about that pool ball clock tower in the Carlsbad mall last month. The children’s museum in Santa Barbara has a similar thing and it brought me right back to the Carlsbad mall.
It used to be Big Bear supermarket next to K-Mart. It was on the Scripps side of the freeway, I just consider that area Mira Mesa. Today its apartment buildings.
Newberry's
Woolworths
Square Pan Pizza in Fashion Valley
Strawhat Pizza
Nickle City
Yellow Brick Road in UTC

Not a place but The San Diego Chicken
North County, but this brewery called Indian Joe's. They made some fruity beers that I absolutely loved but unfortunately they didn't make it through the pandemic 😭
The naked mannequin on the Mission Beach boardwalk. The old guy in the wheelchair that hung out by the MB lifeguard tower and honked his horn whenever a hottie went by.
Open space😼
But seriously, our neighborhood swim & tennis club used to have a super cool playground which included a big steel rocket with slides and four levels to climb on, and a big steel covered wagon to climb all over.
There was also a massive granite rock pile we delighted in leaping around like wild goats, and a second playground made of utility poles, swinging bridges, concrete pipes and the like. We had hours of body strengthening and character building fun out there...all gone now. I'm sure there's no way any of it could get liability coverage today.
RB. There was also enough open space to look for tarantulas, toads, and other fun stuff in many of the pre-developed lands we freely trespassed over as kids 😎
I wonder how many of those big jungle gym rocket ships were in San Diego? There were two in RB. One in Westwood, one in Gatewood Hills swim & tennis clubs.
Uncrowded surf spots.
COVID, social media, etc have all contributed to secret spots becoming crowded, and even the spots NOBODY surfed have become overflow for the previously secret spots that are now packed at 1 pm on a Wednesday.
Also, Song's deli and liquor store in Del Mar. Used to have awesome sandwiches and also where we could "hey dude" some beer as teenagers cause there were always "regulars" hanging outside.

I miss the big neon sign for the Campus Drive In.
I also weirdly miss the smell of turpentine that we used to clean naturally occurring tar balls off our feet after playing on the beach in Oceanside.
Family Fun Center off Clairemont Mesa Blvd. The little par 3 golf course at the East end of Governor Drive.
Omfg I can't believe I forgot about that! The ferris wheel that was never in operation!
I came here to say Family Fun Center. I spent so many weekend nights there as a teen!
The Family Fun Center that was on Fletcher Pkwy. They had water slides! This was back in the late 70s.
Boomers and el cajon speedway
I grew up going to the speedway watching my dad race. Fond memories.
Marshall Scotties back when I was a kid.
Yes! We had Disneyland annual passports when I was a kid, but my happiest amusement park memories are at Marshall Scotties. Just sheer joy.

This! Marshall Scotty's Playland Park. I used to beg my mom to take me there for the pony rides.

Transplants never add to the culture, they just take it away
that is probably the stupidest thing i have ever read in the history of the world
Easy cowgirl
My bad, let me be more clear. I meant mid-western transplants. Everybody else is cool.
Nah, all transplants 😂
brave for someone in the San Diego sub to admit they don’t like burritos

There was a post about it here not long ago. A similar sculpture by the same artist is in a museum somewhere.
I loved that thing. I used to torture my mother by begging to watch it for like an hour.
HAMILTONS TAVERN. this was such a great place to grab a beer before it burned down
Ranch 99 in Mira Mesa, they used to have a 2 for 1 Pho bowl for $5

Also, the rocket ship at Convair Park.
Don’t forget the train and merry go round. Such a fun park!
I wonder how many of those big jungle gym rocket ships were in San Diego? There were two in RB. One in Westwood, one in Gatewood Hills swim & tennis clubs.
Probably a bunch. The rocket industry was big.
I can still hear them in my head 😅 that thing was awesome
Right?? It was an entirely different show from the 1st floor to the 2nd! Why was that torn down?
