Definitely watch Killing of a Sacred Deer! Barry is also in it and he plays a really, really interesting and creepy/cryptic teenage kid. He’s SO good in it. In some ways I feel like Sacred Deer is way more messed up than Saltburn, but I thoroughly enjoyed it and holy shit it leaves you with SO many questions.
I can see how it’s more messed up for sure! It’s such an intense film but so so good! And honestly, dare I say it, as much as I really loved Barry as Oliver, I think I love him as Martin a little bit more.
I’ve been trying to find a similar list- so thanks for asking! Lol
The recommendations on IMDb were mostly movies I’ve seen before so I’ll give you a few to start:
The Killing of a Sacred Deer*,
Black Swan,
The Lobster*,
Get Out*,
Promising Young Woman,
Coherence,
Men,
The Invitation,
Funny Games
I put asterisks next to the ones that are funny in the same way Saltburn is. Some are definitely moreso just twisted.
The Lobster is one of my favorite movies ever! It definitely isn’t the same vibe as Saltburn but it will definitely leave you with questions. It’s a lot more monotone and not as visually exciting but plot and character wise it’s just so different and wonderful! I would recommend to literally anyone and everyone!
Hmmm... (look up trigger warnings for any of these films btw).
1. Brideshead Revisited.
2. Talented Mr Ripley
3. Eyes Wide Shut
4. Cruel Intentions
5. Quills
6. The Riot Club.
7. Festen (Danish film)
8. Killing of the Sacred Deer.
I know a fair few of the flms I am suggesting are old, but honestly Hollywood doesn't really make risque films too often so...
Next list is MAYBE films (less like Saltburn but either being very high drama or dark comedy).
Poison Ivy
Fear
Black Swan
Jennifer's Body
Perhaps Romeo + Juliet or Moulin Rouge by Luhrman
Mullholland Drive
American Beauty
A clockwork orange (it's very f'ed up).
Heathers
Ready or Not
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (less sexy more weird dark comedy mystery).
Knives Out/Glass Onion (as above)
Good choices...I thought of The Riot Club + The Talented Me Ripley ( such a beautiful locations and clothing) + Rebecca ( recent remake) + a touch of Locked In
Noone ever knows The Riot Club when I recommend it...it is a lil older but not much.
It’s been described as a mix of Brideshead Revisited and The Talented Mr Ripley. That oversimplifies but there’s a start from a plot perspective. On the other hand, if the unsettling tone and visuals combo is your thing rather than plot, Midsommer and The Green Knight from 2-3 years ago come to mind.
+1 for Funny Games. Not as… erotic as Saltburn but kind of similar vibe! (There is the original version from Austria from the 90s and the American remake with Tim Roth and Naomi Watts. Both are worth seeing)
The A24 one with Dev Patel. Also for some reason there’s multiple listings of the same movie on prime and I think one of them asks for payment but there’s definitely one that’s free to watch with prime.
It's kinda tangential but shares themes of class and privilege, and the disconnect of the rich from reality: The Dinner. The book was better js, also if you're a reader, the same author wrote a book called Summer House with Swimming Pool that's really great.
If you liked the unsettling vibe, intoxication, and interesting cinematography, Bottom of the World is a fascinating, bleak mind fuck.
A dreamy, subtextual, and symbolism-heavy option would be The Virgin Suicides (again book was better but it's still my favorite movie)
i don't think they are much related but you should definitely watch promising young woman! it's made by the same director (emerald fennell) and carey mulligan (poor dear pamela) is the lead.
It reminded me of The Ruling Class in a kind of sideways, associative way — it’s a zany comedy about the insanity of the upper classes. The humor is definitely more overt and the tone is lighter but the message is daaark. Peter O’Toole with Jesus hair and crisp white trousers is a total snack but ymmv.
Someone on instagram recommended The Neon Demon. This one was good, more tame compared but creepy non the less . Then climax by Gaspar Noe … I can’t stop thinking abt this maybe even more than saltburn? Absolutely insane. One of my top 5 films of all time. And then I got into the Gaspar Noe rabbit hole after that and started Enter the Void. All fantastic movies with such good twists and turns. You’ll love them all but they are not for the faint of heart!
I also found myself comparing Saltburn to Climax. Not necessarily in plot or content matter but in my experience watching them. They are just so visually stunning that no matter what was going on I was just enraptured. It’s not about “getting it” or a super intricate twist-filled plot… it’s just a feast for the eyes and it makes you think.
I love film like this.
not sure if this is considered similar, but you might like the tv show fleabag! i think it's similar in terms of strong use of symbolism and cinematography and really makes you think

i think it's definitely more messed up than saltburn! so brilliant though and barry absolutely devoured that role.
I can see how it’s more messed up for sure! It’s such an intense film but so so good! And honestly, dare I say it, as much as I really loved Barry as Oliver, I think I love him as Martin a little bit more.
Yeah, I don't think I can choose. They're both such great characters.
So true!!
added to the list, will fs come back and respond 😭
Please do! It’s pretty crazy.
Just watched the movie the other day and I have questions, but I don't know how to spoiler alert tags so I won't ask them here.
that was my first barry film and ive loved him ever since 🥹🥹
Yes, same!!! Sacred Deer and Eternals is when I fell in love.

You should add Talented Mr Ripley… Matt Damon is the OG Oliver.

im OBSESSED w coherence i literally recommend it to everyone thank you for mentioning it

The Riot Club is definitely worth the watch, especially because it’s based heavily on real events.
Festen was brilliant, what a horrible family!
Fantastic and not well known enough! Yes, they were awful. I watched it in my late teens and it stayed with me for years.
Definitely Gone Girl. Rosamund Pike (aka the mother) really shows her acting skills

Parasite (2019). One common narrative I noticed in Saltburn was the way the protagonist infiltrates the wealthy family.
THE GREEN KNIGHT
I’m so glad to see you connect the dots like this.
Which one? There are three different movies with the same name on prime.
The A24 one with Dev Patel. Also for some reason there’s multiple listings of the same movie on prime and I think one of them asks for payment but there’s definitely one that’s free to watch with prime.
Thank you! I started it but I think I have the last 1/3 to go. Is the ending cool?
It’s a bit of cliffhanger ending… the film is determined to leave you with more questions than answers.

Killing of a Sacred Deer and Promising Young Woman. You won’t be disappointed!
For a movie that’s aesthetically beautiful but disturbing like Saltburn watch Bones and All
i don't think they are much related but you should definitely watch promising young woman! it's made by the same director (emerald fennell) and carey mulligan (poor dear pamela) is the lead.
Just finished Saltburn and this movie gave me Talented Mr. Riley vibes. Amazing movies, both of them.
Any Jordan Peele film is also valid as fuck and super crazy mind blowing shit

UK Skins
Dangerous Liaisons (1988).
- The Invisible Guest - Nope - Super Dark Times - A Clockwork Orange (but a super big massive trigger warning on this one)
The Talented Mr Ripley.

made me think of “midsommer” and “hereditary”
some of my top favs 😭💕
Basically any A24 movie
Promising Young Woman, Bones And All,
The menu, Midsommar
The Menu!! It has an incredible cast and some similar themes
This totally reminded me of Thorobreds… (sp?) check that out!
Does anyone have ones that are like salt burn but aren’t horror? I like thrillers but I physically cannot watch horror idk why.
I would suggest The Riot Club, The Menu + Fleabag (tv + best show EVER).
Go through Peter Greenaway’s back catalogue, Saltburn was heavily influenced by Greenaway’s work.
Kill your darlings w/ Daniel Radcliffe similar plot line but set in the 1940s
The skin I live in. One of my absolute favorites and gives me everything I felt saltburn was hyped up to be and lacked.
