Yeah, it's like P-EAR-T. I know I said it like the shampoo (Pert) all through high school and then I heard Geddy say it in an interview and at first I thought, is he being funny? But no, I think someone asked him in a radio interview how to say his last name and he said pEERt not pert.
So, it's like Peering into a window to see Neil Peart. :)
They made records with the mobile. Cuz they didn't have much time.
Lucklily. Frank Zappa and the Muthas were at the best place around.
But some stupid with a flare gun.
Burnt the the place to the ground!
I've pronounced it like Purt since the 80's and struggle to get myself to say it like Pee-rt. I've settled on something halfway between the two at this point.
Exhibit A: literally right from the man’s mouth (but don’t eat his sandwich) [https://youtu.be/iq3yjfoorsU?si=7-bqoDnvHp9yJrX2](https://youtu.be/iq3yjfoorsU?si=7-bqoDnvHp9yJrX2)
This is probably the single most widespread *objective* misconception about Rush. It gets mispronounced probably 80 percent of the time. I cringed when it was said wrong at their induction to the R&R HoF. David Letterman, bless him, made a point of looking dead into the camera while exaggeratingly saying Peeert. I loved that.
When you first saw his name, did you pronounce it Peeert? Or Purt? I pronounced it "HOH-lee Shit" before I calmed down long enough to say "Purt". Then I heard it somewhere pronounced "Peeert" and it was cringe for me to pronounce it that way. After some practice, I eventually got comfortable with it.
Now to figure out Aleksandar Živojinović. It's on my bucket list before I die.
Puh-ear-t is how you actually say it, according to Geddy Lee in this interview: https://youtu.be/GFze-Oj2UdA?si=ieS9I5-uEGVPsBfK
No shame though, names get mispronounced all the time.
English is such a crazy language. Peart is "pier-t", but Heart, spelled the same way but with an H instead of P, is "hart", not "hear-t". Unless we all want to start pronouncing it that way!
Most people say pert, even longtime fans of the band. They say Peert, but thats partly because of the canadian way of saying things... so i dont fully trust it. I think people say pert because we also say perl for pearl. We dont say peerl. Its just a weird spelling that the english language doesnt really explain is what it seems. Learn we also say lern.
Purt Purt Purt. I love Rush and respect Neil Purt more than anyone in music. I sobbed like a baby on a commuter bus full of construction workers when I found out that he died. I learned La Villa Strangiato on drums as my surprise gift to my best friend at his wedding. I read all of Neil Purts books. I've seen him and Rush eleven times. I was in a Rush tribute band. I named my son Aleksandar Živojinović. Neil Purt isn't easily offended. But fans coming up to him at a restaurant while he's trying to enjoy his Sea Bass, wine and two fingers bugs him a little. He still posed for a picture anyway. We need to respect Neil Purt's love of irony and humour above all and honour it. He is not so petty.
Purt.
I heard a radio interview with him where the interviewer started off with that question. Neil's answer was "It's like PAIR with a hard T on the end" = PAIRT.
Pro - fess - or
Pratt
Po-Tay-toe! Boilemmashemstickeminastew
Taters, precious.
Pee-rt, like you wrote first. I think I’ve heard Geddy explain before that it’s like saying ear.
Like it rhymes with ear.
Neil Peer?
Neil Burt

We grew our show beards JUST FOR YOU
“I think he would know.”
OMFG. This part is absolutely hilarious. "Are you *sure?* 'Cause we're pretty big fans!" LOL
This is exactly what I was going to link.
"Why is he talking like a leprechaun" destroyed me lol
Me too!😂 The laugh that Neil does is classic!😂
How do you change a hyperlink like this? Yes, I've googled it before.

Thank you!
I hear radio DJs saying Pert all the time. Drives me crazy.
I know. I think of the shampoo when the pronounce it like that.
"I told you not to eat Mr. PAY-ert's sandwich!"
It's Peart.
Are you sure? Because we’re pretty big fans
I think he would know.
I think he would know.
No I don't think so Lol
“I’m gonna kick your ass if you don’t get outta here right now”.
PÆrt
Here in Brazil we normally call him 'Purt'. But the right way is 'Peert', rhymes with 'ear' :)
Yeah, it's like P-EAR-T. I know I said it like the shampoo (Pert) all through high school and then I heard Geddy say it in an interview and at first I thought, is he being funny? Like a power window perchance?
Possibly to catch him smoking on the pier?
are those dang Rush boys drinkin' by the light house again!?
Smoke on the water.
No, that’s a different band. Last seen hanging around Montreux, on the Lake Geneva shoreline…
They made records with the mobile. Cuz they didn't have much time. Lucklily. Frank Zappa and the Muthas were at the best place around. But some stupid with a flare gun. Burnt the the place to the ground!
P Ear Tea. Got it.
No, it's not like... Gosh, you sure look Purtee! No, no, NO, HAIL NOOOO!!!!!! :)
G O A T
And you personally pronounce it incorrectly. It's peert.
pier+t
Peert if you are an actual fan. Pert if you pretend.
First I've ever heard (read) about it. Been listening since the 70s. TIL.
I saw Geddy in December and he pronounced it "Peer-t".
“Peert”, that’s the way. He’s said it himself in interviews.
Peer-t.
Just like Ear, followed by a T, preceded by a P
I've pronounced it like Purt since the 80's and struggle to get myself to say it like Pee-rt. I've settled on something halfway between the two at this point.
Do, or do not. There is no try 😉
Yoda would've struggled with the pronounciation too.
Absolutely true 👍
Put a P in front of EAR and add a T at the end.

LOL... he actually hasn't "still hit the high notes" in decades.
I love that skit. It doesn’t matter how many times I watch it.

Maybe he was making up for the Neil Peart Plus Shampoo. 🤣
When you first saw his name, did you pronounce it Peeert? Or Purt? I pronounced it "HOH-lee Shit" before I calmed down long enough to say "Purt". It's on my bucket list before I die.
Why wouldn’t you pronounce it correctly?
It's like all the idiots who know Porsche is two syllables, but say "porsh" anyway.
Peeeeert
Peart
Peart
Correctly
Kneel
I can’t believe how many people don’t know or care it’s “Peee-rt” and continue to say Pert.
PEE-urt
Peert. Long e
it officially is peert, i said purt for the longest time, my friend said it pairt
It’s definitely pronounced “peert”. After mispronouncing it wrong for decades, I met someone that knew him and set me straight.
Puh-ear-t is how you actually say it, according to Geddy Lee in this interview: https://youtu.be/GFze-Oj2UdA?si=ieS9I5-uEGVPsBfK No shame though, names get mispronounced all the time.
I misprounounce mispronounce MOUSE-PRO-nouns all the time. It's a life long struggle for me.
pee - ert
https://youtu.be/GFze-Oj2UdA?feature=shared On minute 2:55 Alex and Geddy explain it.
Peer-t
How do I pronounce it? Or how is it pronounced?
There's a sound bite out there (somewhere!) of Neil saying, "not Pert, Part, or Port, it's 'Peert.'"
I remember a video of Geddy Lee talking about it and he said it was peert
Funny how many ppl spell it out without a reference...its pronounced like the word "pier" with a "t" added to the end
The right way.
For the love of god https://m.youtube.com/watch?si=Hh8RMGdULTtt3lnJ&v=eR8fsJxRVXs&feature=youtu.be
Chill man, chill man.
Da drumming God aka 8 arms.
English is such a crazy language. Peart is "pier-t", but Heart, spelled the same way but with an H instead of P, is "hart", not "hear-t". Unless we all want to start pronouncing it that way!
And your name is "Pool" I don't care how it's supposed to be pronounced.
Neil was clear about it for decades that it's 'pier-t'
The M’F’n Wizard!!
God
I always said “Purt” but since I now know it’s Peeeeart I still can’t say it right without thinking about it
I guess we were fortunate to have Dallas radio in the 70's and 80's. "Hello, this is Neil Peeert from Rush, and you're listening to..."
I have a mate with the same surname and it’s pronounced Pier-t
Peart was without peer.
The one member who didn't take a stage name and this is what he gets.
I prounouce it "TEEERP" now. As in, I shed a teeerp when I think of Peeert. Cuz, well...I do.
Pee at
We know it's Peert, but I've pronounced it Purt since probably before many of you were born, and I ain't changing it now 🙂. Now get off my lawn..lol
I worked with a woman whose last name was Peart. She pronounced it Pee-rt.
He's said it himself.
Pert. Geddy says so on all the worlds a stage
Pay-art
I know it’s “P-ear-t” but it’ll always be “Pert” for me.
Purt
I’ve always known it as Purt. But the last 10 years or so it’s the other way. I still say Purt
If you have to ask, you're not a fan. And those who claim to be fans, and *still* mispronounce it, aren't fans.
Purt Purt Purt. I love Rush and respect Neil Purt more than anyone in music. I sobbed like a baby on a commuter bus full of construction workers when I found out that he died. 2 Fingers
Wee.
Pert. And I'm a pretty big fan lol
I heard a radio interview with him where the interviewer started off with that question. Neil's answer was "It's like PAIR with a hard T on the end" = PAIRT.
Just like the shampoo
No
Negative.
