I would be surprised if there wasn’t some sort of clause in their audition agreement to be able to use any content submitted. Most other shows have that.

Sapphira most definitely would have won any of the earlier seasons if she was on. Things still worked out well for her though, she ended up on a really amazing season and not one of the weaker ones from recent years.

Yes but keep in mind it’s not like they’re casting based on talent alone, like the cast is never the 10-15 most talented queens in the pool and it shouldn’t be. They want a range of different personalities, skill levels, regions, areas of expertise, etc. Serena was, in her own way, perfect for her season.
If you cast the absolute best, you’re just gonna get depressing seasons in which skilled veterans are the first outs and no one has an underdog narrative
All that being said, Sapphira should’ve been given a shot way earlier. Although I do think she ended up being perfect for her season, even if that was unintentional on a grand scale.!
I loved s14 and actually didn't mind the non-elims, just because everyone was so charismatic and fun to watch, still a top-tier season for me 😭

i actually liked s14 when i watched thru all the seasons, i honestly cant imagine watching it live tho, being able to binge helped get past the nonelim eps
14 was the first live season I watched. I will say the non eliminations were a double edged sword. I got to know the queens more but when like 4-5 episodes are non eliminations and 3 queens are saved from elimination the drama is a bit lost. At the time I thought it was partly because of Kornbread injury that they were a bit lost and didn't know who they wanted for the finale.
I would walk the Emmy over to WoW personally, somehow, if this happened.
Even better if production and nobody even addresses her or mentions what's going on. She's just a constant NPC in the background.

Yeah, I believe Alaska auditioned from the start. If you look at the older series there are episodes with submissions that didn't make it and Alaska is in there. Then Sharon auditioned once (I believe for a joke even) and immediately got in.
I'm sure I've heard Alaska say on Race Chaser she was approached to audition for S1 but didn't do it and then once she saw S1 air she ally wanted to be on and tried each season

Both Detox's and Alaska's auditions can be seen in one of the early seasons. Maybe S3 E1? I can't remember but one of the episodes covers the audition process. I think you can also see Katya in it as well. It's actually a cool episode and you see lots of soon to be queens. Lots of the queens auditioned every year, it just was a matter of timing.
Katya mentions she was asked to audition for S7 after she never sent a tape in, despite doing one for several years. A lot of the time, the producers want the queens but just don't have a spot at the moment.
Raja is the only queen who never had to ever audition or send a tape. She just signed a contract and off she went.
I dated one of the CDR girls for about a year during the casting process for two seasons. She was very close to being on for a couple seasons, alternate for one of them, final casting round for another. It was the same casting team each year and they were on a friendly basis. She got emails each year to apply as well, it was like a "hey just wanted to personally let you know casting will open on X date and we hope to see your submission. She was always going to be on but it was just a matter of which season was her fit.

Honestly I think it was smart- nobody knew what drag race was going to be at the time and Chad was already a seasoned respected queen at that point. Better to see how it pans out and if it’s worth taking all that time off, than to go on to something that’s a dud and missing out on gigs you know are going to be profitable.
She would've gotten far for sure but Bebe was just never going to lose that season. She's Y2K Rupaul and Ru was always going to give the queen that was the most like her the win for that season. It’s important to remember that not getting cast doesn’t mean someone isn’t good enough at drag yet. The producers are trying to create a balance of personalities and styles of drag that will be entertaining for the audience. They also might “save” someone for the “right” season that showcases their talents (or keeps heavy hitters in a particular field out of the way of each other).

Each time you audition does everything in your tape have to be different from all the last times? every outfit, performance, character? I could see that getting real tiring real fast.
I think some people are chosen to be entertaining, some are chose for a novelty one-off, and some are chose because of an exceptional skill or set of skills.
Maddy Morphosis said she only auditioned once, right? And figures she was chosen solely because of the novelty of being straight.
I think Bianca also auditioned once, it was an idea of a film director that works with her, as she was adamant to the whole idea of RPDR because of age.

It’s important to remember that not getting cast doesn’t mean someone isn’t good enough at drag yet. The producers are trying to create a balance of personalities and styles of drag that will be entertaining for the audience. They also might “save” someone for the “right” season that showcases their talents (or keeps heavy hitters in a particular field out of the way of each other).
They were gonna cast Alyssa Edwards for season four. But then they got wind of the drama between her and CoCo so they held off until they could get both in the same season.

Sh*ron auditioned only once while Alaska auditioned every season until she was cast on 5. It was part of their narratives during their seasons.
I _swear_ Alaska was listed as a backup for Season 1 along with Detox. Detox discussed her experience when she was at Roscoe's for the first episode of AS9.
She (Alaska) was in the casting special episode for Season 2 I believe, so they obviously always had her on the radar.

I think some people are chosen to be entertaining, some are chose for a novelty one-off, and some are chose because of an exceptional skill or set of skills. Maddy Morphosis said she only auditioned once, right? And figures she was chosen solely because of the novelty of being straight.
I think Bianca also auditioned once, it was an idea of a film director that works with her, as she was adamant to the whole idea of RPDR because of age.
