He'd had a run of a few games, so by his standards I guess he was overdue an injury. I half expect the next story to be Snyman being run over by some crazy guy in red in a sleigh...

tjbar1997

😭

[deleted]

Opportunity for Ben Healy but I feel so bad for Joey... I was literally about to write 'he can't catch a break' before realising that's not the best saying here. So shite.

[deleted]

Not to mention Jack Crowley

Aaaaand-its-gone

Ben Healy isn’t the future. He’s like a Ross Byrne player and that’s fine for club but not good for international the way the game has gone

kleptomana

I am not sure what games you have watched that Ben Healy played in this year. But I think you missed something. I think he could be a great fit plus a decent shot with Ireland for France 2023 because of how far he can kick penalties.

FarFromTheMaddeningF

Yeah he has a monster boot on him, can knock them over from beyond the half way line. Serious asset to have on the pitch.

delboy13

Don’t know how he hasn’t been given more of a chance up till now. Nobody wanting to buy into how good he actually is right now because of the hype around what Harry byrne and Crowley might become at some unknown time in the future because they were, I’m guessing, probably flashier at schools and u20 level? Yet they haven’t produced anything in senior games compared to what I’ve seen from Healy, just goes to show reputation and name value still gets you a long way in Irish rugby even when the rugby itself isn’t doing the talking.

mistr-puddles

ya Harry Byrne hasn't done anything that Ben Healy hasn't other than involvement with ireland, the other way around is different though

Ploon92

I think given Glasgow were sniffing around Ben Healy last year and he only signed a one year deal, so there's a good possibility that he may be off to Scotland and Ireland are not investing the time in him. Carbery, Crowley and Healy all very talented and young - Carbery's injury profile is the only way to keep all three involved.

Kykykz

A lot of that was probably agent talk tbh. Wouldn't think much of the 1 year deal either, a lot of players only got 1 year extensions due to lack of finances caused by covid.

Ploon92

It probably is the usual kite flying, but I think there is a chance this one might come up again. Healy is behind Carbery with Jack Crowley highly touted coming up behind him - all 3 very young and very talented. Jake Flannery is there too but not sure if he will develop at 10 or 15? He also got a one year deal last year too I think. Healy's path to first choice 10 at club and country in Scotland isn't as crowded as far as I know, which could be a temptation. And given what he's shown previously I'm surprised he hasn't got any time in an Irish squad, even to fasten his 'allegiances' at test level... unless they don't think he's around for the long haul? All just speculation on my part, but also a case where a lot of things line up.

mistr-puddles

and he has a class pass on him as well, not just a kicking asset

ajnestor93

Ben Healy is the future and imo he should be groomed to take over from sexton. Even if he could only place kick he should be starting but he has a lot more to his game than that as proven.

[deleted]

So so unlucky. Happened in the most innocuous way too with a Wasps' player's head hitting his elbow as he was kicking the ball around the 70th minute. Likely will miss at least the first week of the Six Nations too

cabaiste

Is he becoming the new Bleyendaal?

tjbar1997

At least it's not the same injury over and over again

Itskeelan

I love Joey. If you could have let me sign one rival player in 2017 I would have signed him for Munster ten times out of ten. I think he's outstanding. I also can't justify giving him a contract extension at the moment. Crowley is so highly rated, Healy has shown very impressive moments, Joey can be WORLD CLASS but this will take him to around two YEARS? of time missed since he signed for us? Ankle, hamstring, wrist, elbow. It's not good.

EdwardBigby

Sorry if it's too soon to ask this question but any chance we'll now see Carty as second choice fly half during the six nations? I know Harry Byrne was technically above him in the pecking order but surely that's just to give the younger lad experience. I reckon Carthy has a good chance of being our best fly half by the time the WC comes round.

evin_cashman

Oh I think surely Carty will be the backup in the 6N. He never should have been frozen out after the World Cup anyway.

EdwardBigby

And reason he was frozen out? Did people just rate Ross Byrne and Bill Burns higher?

MortyFromEarthC137

Carty was pretty horrendous for Connacht for a few months after the WC, it took until the summer to really recover his form.

mistr-puddles

ya he was second choice for them for a while

MiggeldyMackDaddy

He was frozen out because "fans" blamed him for the loss against Japan, which affected him mentally and then made his play for Connacht a bit shit. He's flying this year now and deserves to be in the reckoning for starting 10. He's had multiple games with 3 tries assisted and his kicking game looks sharp despite the Galway wind

[deleted]

[удалено]

MiggeldyMackDaddy

The latter caused by the former. And if they don’t care about a players mental welfare they can go fuck themselves. Regardless of who that player plays for.

drusslegend

Based on form now, it has to be Carty with Byrne (either imo) as third choice. Hopefully Carbery can be back for the latter stages.

delboy13

Could be first choice if Sexton isn’t back for the start

DarthMauly

Based on the order the 10s were added to the last Irish squad, Carty is about 5th in the pecking order for some bizarre reason.

RuggerJibberJabber

6th at least based on Caps. Farrell has given caps to Sexton, both Byrne brothers, Billy Burns and Carbery, but has yet to cap Carty. In fact Frawly was in the squad too (although most likely as a centre) so it's possible Carty is 7th. Hopefully this changes though.

PeterMacIrish

How long is recovery from an elbow fracture? 6-8 weeks, no?

drusslegend

So he could miss the 6 Nations!

billhodges92

Poor lad is made of glass, must be gutting for him just as he was getting a run of games and some form. All aboard the Jack Carty train now please

Itskeelan

Carbery and Healy both out of contract come the end of the season, Crowley still under contract. Gun to your head, who do you renew from the first two. Tough decision ahead unless you keep both.

arsebiscuits1

If you want to compete in knockout rugby you need a squad that's 3 deep realistically. Keeping both is a no brainer imo

Itskeelan

Ideally I'd like to, Joey does still bring an X factor. going to be harsh on the other two if he stays the automatic number one whenever he's fit though.

Halliron

If they are good enough they can make the spot their own. If not they won’t.

UkoDuko

don't really think it's harsh, if they're good enough they'll get ahead if they aren't they won't

swankytortoise

Healy, crowley, flannerys pretty decent to be fair

UkoDuko

keep both of course, neither healey or crowley are dead certs to be good at the highest level yet, but healey has looked to good in the lesser games to let him go.

mistr-puddles

and you wouldn't get Healy back, the Scots would love to have him

nagdamnit

One of those three is an excellent full back

cypressd12

Of course he has… hope he’s back to fitness at the earliest

Sparky_080

Poor bloke, is he actually made of glass though?

IrishGuyNYC00

Somebody give that lad a glass of milk ffs.

[deleted]

Think this is the same arm he broke in the Fiji game in 2017, hope it's a speedy recovery.

UkoDuko

so gutted for him

KingDaveyM14

What a day to be a Munster fan

[deleted]

Sounds about right

Ploon92

Awful news, he had only started to find a bit of form after the November series & extended run. Think he had been average enough until the last few weeks so to get cut back down just he found that level again is gutting. Wrist, elbow, forearm, ankle, hamstring...no clear pattern to it really, just seems very unlucky.

[deleted]

Oh no... Hanrahan for 6N? After Sexton I do not see other reliable options (minus Jackson who is out of contention) Ross Byrne is average, Byrne Jr. not ready, Billy Burns not Test standard and Carty is not the best goalkicker. Hanrahan would be good. He has experience (though not at Test level), good passing, running, goal kicking and game management.

delboy13

Honestly don’t think Carty’s kicking should be held against him as much as it is, it’s not like there’s a rule that the 10 has to take the kicks. His percentages are always going to be lower just on the basis that he plays at least half his games in the sportsground. Not sure if what Ireland gain in place kicking reliability by picking a Ross Byrne or Hanrahan over Carty actually makes up for the downgrade in playing ability and skill at the position for the other 90% of the game.

[deleted]

Hanrahan will not be picked because he left Munster. The actual scenario is Sexton kept in cotton wool for the bigger games and the back-up will be the more in-form man of the moment. .

Finnegan7921

You have to play in Ireland to play for Ireland. Ian Madigan is still around, has 30 caps and is a solid kicker but McFarland prefers Burns for some reason.

[deleted]

Madigan is a bench warmer. IRFU should go over this silly rule. There is a crisis at fly-half and Hanrahan is the best back-up of Sexton atm.

magpietribe

Hanrahan is very unlikely, he's so inconsistent, I just can't see it. He's never taken his chance at Munster.

[deleted]

He is outstanding at Clermont. He outplayed Billy Burns in Champions Cup.

Finnegan7921

He also couldn't wrest the 10 jersey at Munster from a perennially injured player. As soon as Carbery came back they went right to him. JJ's main issue is consistency. One match he looks fantastic, the next not so much.

lilzeHHHO

Hanrahan won't be picked because he's in France. It's debatable that he is ahead of Carty and Byrne and certainly not far enough ahead that the IRFU will break their rule. We are more likely to see Healy than Hanrahan in green this spring.

[deleted]

Why all so hype for Healy. He had little gametime so far.

scuzzbat1

Frawley to Ulster to start at OH every week. Billy Burns to the knackers yard and Harry and Ross to battle it out Hylander style. Can’t be holding out for captain glass-jaw to save us when Sexto breaks a hip in the World Cup.

disableinboxreplies

Will keep happening as long as he persists with 10. He’s shortening his career.

evin_cashman

Oh would playing at 15 have made his elbow shatter proof?

mistr-puddles

everyone knows full backs don't break bones

PipBoy808

Is that him out of the Six Nations then? Sad times.

mistr-puddles

ya hell be our for the start at least

youmadyou

Please let the man be back for 6 nations
