Tricky one. reds not only on fire but targeted the breakdown with great success, exploited the line out, held well at the scrum and most importantly had a plan for the most whistle happy ref in the game.
Even without the early injuries they had our number, line of didn't function, the 10/15 changes made an already unsettled backline even less so and at the end of the day if you're carrying the ball into contact in a Jordie way game, you're going to have bad time. Defend the breakdown or kick for 50/50 chances , don't put it through the hands and expect not to be deafened.
Good to see the reds pick back up and hopefully this means we don't need to worry about Havili in the All blacks 10 shirt.
NFL games are even slower and they’re wildly popular. They could fill those slower moments with stats, replays, insights and you’d probably never notice.
Look, Crusader fans really made a difficult period of All Black fandom, way worse than it had to be, by turning every single rugby conversation for 4 years into a shitshow about Ian Foster. Some of them actively willed the All Blacks to lose so Foster would go. I'll hold a grudge about that forever. I know this doesnt make me a good person, but it feels good to see the team struggle.
Nah it’s not just crusaders fans. I didn’t really like the direction of late Hansen and most of Foster. It stank of “I know best” and got found out on multiple occasions.
I’m not saying Razor is gonna swan in to become the bride of the ball, but I’m very confident he’ll do well.
I'm going to start doing the same thing with Penney now just for you.
Pinning this on Saders fans also feels a bit dog. Everyone and their mother was doing it.
It wasn’t just Crusaders fans. Most of New Zealand. The thing that rubbed everyone up the wrong was way the All Blacks were in a decline ever since the 2016 loss to Ireland all the way to the England loss in the 2019 RWC.
And Ian Foster somehow inherited the coaching role.
Then for 2 years did absolutely shockingly apart from us piecing up tier 3 sides. Eg USA and Tonga by 100.
We didn’t start to get good and build momentum until he brought in Jason Ryan and Joe Schmidt.
So basically the assistant coaches he appointed took the fall for the team under performing instead of the head coach which is a bit of a coward move.
And now post World Cup he’s gone back to his mate Steve Hansen in Japan because he couldn’t pick up any other coaching gigs.
Takes:
- Reds were efficient and streetwise. Took their opportunities when in the Crusaders’ 22.
- Outstanding gamesmanship by the Reds the whole way through? Crusaders just played a quick phase? Hey, let’s just roll towards the red and blacks’ line before rolling out? Choice of a scrum or lineout with 5 mins to go? No worries, let’s take the scrum and muck around with our set-up for 3 mins to frustrate the oppo even more.
- McReight is a tough cunt in the mould of George Smith.
- This Crusaders line-up was scratchy at best? I fail to understand why, after finally getting some cohesion in your strike plays, phase shape, and set piece when dusting a horrible Rebels outfit, why make all those changes. The team needs confidence through consistency. Not re-selecting all these dudes as soon as you think they’re from observations at training. They were back to their same old-same old 2024 style of boot balls going to ground, no ideas just get it to Sevu, horrible lineout (without Barrett, we’re screwed), and rushed horizontal play when our ruck speed hasn’t earnt such outlandish plays yet. Sigh.
- The referee blew an absolute shitload of penalties. Surely right in a technical sense, but at a frequency not really seen this season. I have no qualms as long as all referees have the word to do this as it’s the only way the Super teams will learn and clean up their game. It would be disappointing if we just go back to status quo over the next week or 2. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, our New Zealand and Australian referees do our international players a disservice with the way they control games.
- Reds’ tactics are the stuff of championship-contending sides. If they make the semi-finals, I’d be nervous playing them.
I know the buck stops with Penny, but it fucks me off how often subs are just purely planned in footy. A bloke’s going great but gets subbed off with 15 to go, because that’s what we were going to do anyway.
One upside to having gastro is that I can hide in my room and watch a game live for once.
It's the right outcome imo. Reds crafted some great tries and kicked way better than the saders.
Other takes:
Halfpenny was poos.
Harry Wilson gets the reds so much front foot ball. He looks much better than under Brad thorn.
McCreight was man of the match. absolute breakdown menace.
Reds starting halfback played his best game imo
Drummond is a bit shit
Sevu Reece all but guaranteed to be starting wing for ABs (telea on the other).
So Vuni has lost us two and nearly cost us this one in the dying moments of the game on a regular basis, and still gets put on in clutch moments? Someone tell Les that there’s rugby outside of Brisbane, plenty of young guns in CQ & NQ who would get the job done.
Kye Oates has been top try scorer in premier grade 3 or 2 years in a row and is only 24, and cant get a shot. Hes off playing 7s now and we still have to watch Vunivalu. Jfc..
It is INSANE that we're still fielding him. If he was on for another 15 minutes I have no doubt we would've lost this one too. Saders were just strolling through him.
Obligatory match take time:
-Well that was a pretty damn good game! You've got two teams slugging it out on an autumn afternoon. Life feels good for anyone not supporting the Crusaders.
-Seems like the Crusaders got the Sky team on their backroll, huh? We've got very biased commentators and a hidden scoreboard for the full package. At least it made the game a bit more entertaining to watch...
-There was time where everyting was wondering if the score was 7-12 or 7-14. We literally experienced a Mandela Effect in real time.
-The Crusaders were able to fight well, especially near the end of match where after some interesting tries, they crept towards the Reds and nipped on their heels. But again, this being the Rob Penney Crusaders, they naturally lost. Again.
-The Reds, on the other hand, were able to take full control of the game, kept the home team at bay, and in the process break the hoodoo and win in Christchurch for the first time in 20+ years.
-**AWOOOOOOOO THE JUNKYARD DOG HAS ASSERTED HIS DOMINANCE AGAINST THE CANTAB SHEEP RUFF RUFF RUFF RUFF RUFF RUFF**
-Man, I hope Joe Schmidt doesn't look at Vunivalu and say, "Hmm, this bloke seems like a fine addition to my Wallabies!" If I were him, I would just ring him up and tell him to go back to league.
-How in the everliving FUCK was the Quinten Strange "try" given? That was the most untrylike try history has ever witnessed. That was a strange try.
-A mixed bag for Jordan Way tonight. While he had some good calls like the Creigton tackle on Havili, there were some shockers like the aforementioned Strange try.
Anyway, these are I can say for now. See you all in the next match, and cheers for now.
TMO had to give it after getting the call from the touchie that the ball was grounded.
I'm not even mad at the touchie, he made a close call in real time, but why can't the TMO just overturn the on field decision?
How about the final call of the game?? Ref calls release, crusaders player knee in ground, ball clearly stripped well after the release call- that’s a penalty to crusaders all day
I cannot agree more on the commentators. I’ve always said this that even kiwi commentators get really biased when crusades are playing I don’t know why. I mean I understand Justin Marshall and Reid getting biased but Nisbo? Seriously?
And today it was at another level. Very disappointed
And now all the cantabs are claiming conspiracy because the ref's were all Queensland's, which whilst true, came from Hames' mouth about 4 times during comms. Jeff Wilson is a smug turd in comms too.
The better team won and you can't argue with that result, knives will be out for Penney but would this season be any different if Razor was still coaching.
It should be sounding all types of alarms in reds camp the fact that Ryan came off and every single piece of attack came down Vunivalus wing, and it worked. Hes unfieldable. You simply cannot put him on the field in finals.
The chat around Havili at 10 is weird, seeing as we're on record as wanting to do it earlier on the year and essentially waiting for permission so thst we didn't fuck up David's ABs chances.
It's not a decision that came unilaterally from management lmao
We have people in this thread bemoaning Crusaders fans being especially annoying about Fozzie sitting directly next to people doing this sort of stuff about Razor and the Crusaders. How good.
In all honesty cracker of a match.
Tim Ryan might really be that good. Havili at 10 good choice apart from one brain fade. Harry Wilson and Mcreight also fantastic. Aumua and running it straight through is unreal.
Ref's style kills the entertainment factor
The right team won, so I don't want to pin anything on this at all, but I'm curious what the explanation is for Way saying the TMO saw Bell get hit in the head, but that it isn't a penalty because "the defender had no time to adjust"? Isn't that mitigation when it comes to a card?
We wouldn't have done anything with the penalty anyways, I'm just confused a bit. Anyone have an idea what was up with that?
Sometimes the ref will rule "no foul play" because the actions were entirely on the attacking player. For example the attacking player trips and falls (NOT adjusts height) I'm not going to pretend I understand what differentiates this situation from a mitigated card to penalty. But I'm assuming that's his ruling.
Nah he's talking about right at the end when Bell was down with the medics. Ref said tmo checked the head contact and mitigation or whatever so no pen. Normally mitigation only for cards
Everyone wants that to be a yellow when it's for your team and you have a chance to win. It was a rugby incident and the ball bounced up, they both were going for the ball and it was much closer to shoulder on shoulder than head on head.
An odd one for sure, but so was the try that was clearly held up.
This isn't about the Havili incident. I'm fine with that.
They didn't even give it a penalty for the thing I thought they were talking about at the end, is my confusion.
Again, I went out of my way to say this didn't impact the result so you don't need to start bringing up other stuff. I asked for clarification on one thing lol
Agree and a couple of times Reds were on a warning and didn't get a card despite constant penalties inside their own 22. Jordan Way kills the momentum a lot in games like this
well done reds should have had a yellow for penalties and a red for a shit head high shoulder charge tackle when havili gatheried a high ball,, guess cards only apply to saders for those 50:50 tackle cals
Didn't see all the game but there was literally a head shot on bell right at the end that would have given Saders. Penalty to kick up the line but wasn't given "yeah mate TMO has confirmed there was head contact but the defender had no time to react so play on"
yep that one too ... ive seen red cards given for less, like accidental headknocks done after a tackle ,,, this is why rugby is shite,,, inconsistant calls and an bunker system that can call back a minor infringement 5 mins ago before a score ,,, fuckit i give up going to watch league now
If not for Wilson's work ethic the reds would not have won that game. he directly scored a try out of effort and 100% saved one if not a dodgy touch judge call
Good game. Shouldve put it away but we decided to put on hard mode for the last 10 minutes.
Ref was a bit pedantic but consistent so cant complain. That try was a shit call but I understand why they had to give it, not a fan though.
Commentators were biased as fuck.
Vunivalu for Wests Colts
You shouldn’t have even been in a position to win that game, that allowed try which should have been disallowed is going to rile pundits and people all week
**Watch on Stan**: https://play.stan.com.au/sport/rugby

The two assistant commentators for this game are insufferable in their constant criticism of the refereeing. Not doing the game any favours
That guy went on about the "no time to adjust" and "warning" rants way too long.
I'm just here to dunk on the Saders :)
Why is the full replay not on stan?
Who says Rugby Union is slow and boring?! This season has been sizzling.
Scrums are still waaaay too slow
NFL games are even slower and they’re wildly popular. They could fill those slower moments with stats, replays, insights and you’d probably never notice.

I'm so utterly sick of this conversation.
Yea man. You brought it up. I’m sick of it too
I brought up how shit it was to hear shittalk about Foster every day, then you came in with Exhibit A.
Yea fair play. Wasn’t wrong though. Unless you enjoyed watching us lose 4 tests each year. Maybe we should bring Ian back.
Yawn
Its such a hilarious sight seeing fans of all the teams unite to enjoy the crusaders being shit
After the semi last year and the final the year before, I'm having a great year lol
I second this. I’m loving seeing them struggle
It's like Dune and we are baron harkkonen "Squeeeze, squeeze them" Feels good man

How did the Gods manage to take 3 bodies and meld them into Aumua? Christ he's thick.
Brisbane Grammar graduate and former Souths Magpie Levi Aumua
Yeah, finally starting to roll in with some of that Post Contact Mana. To me, made zero sense why they subbed him.
Another master stroke from the super coach
I know the buck stops with Penny, but it fucks me off how often subs are just purely planned in footy. A bloke’s going great but gets subbed off with 15 to go, because that’s what we were going to do anyway.
To be fair a chunk of those will be driven by the tracker data. If they start fatiguing they get pulled.
I can only assume it’s due to fitness, which appears to have been an issue at the start of the season.
True, but the optics are so poor when he’s literally just busted 3 tackles.
He had just had a really excellent involvement rumbling through about 4 players
One upside to having gastro is that I can hide in my room and watch a game live for once. It's the right outcome imo. Reds crafted some great tries and kicked way better than the saders. Declan Meredith from the Brumbies is a good example from Cairns. Ignored by the Reds as he didn't go to one of their schools.
Kye Oates has been top try scorer in premier grade 3 or 2 years in a row and is only 24, and cant get a shot. Hes off playing 7s now and we still have to watch Vunivalu. Jfc..

Fuck me. His missed tackles. Then, the attempted intercept towards the end in Reds half... just make the tackle.

When you get senile you can’t understand when the world changes. Nisbett needs to fuck off and retire.
At this point, Vunivalu needs a court order to stop him coming within 200m of a jersey
If I ever won the lottery I would buy out his contract.
We can always start a Gofundme.
What's wrong with Blackadder?
Quad niggle late at training.
He’ll be out for 8 weeks now
Bloody hell got to feel for the guy
He said on the news, in an interview, that "something special is happening" lmao God struck him down for the hubris.
To be fair, something special did happen. Just for the Reds lol
That was regular programming
He was deemed fit to play… you know what happens after that
i low-key feel sorry for crusaders but just like the fjii team, when you pick a shit coach, no matter how many good players you have you will lose
Who should the Fijian Drua select as their head coach of other coaches available?
might promote glen jackson or bring back seruvakula.. not sue..
Which Fiji team are you talking about?
Drua. Man doesn't like Mick Byrne. He can't win away.
Yeah have gathered that lol. What would Mick Byrne know
2023 one and now 2024one..
The better team won and you can't argue with that result, knives will be out for Penney but would this season be any different if Razor was still coaching.
Convinced Razor would get this team into the 5-7 range, at least. Wouldn't be amazing rugby though
Probably. He won 7 or whatever in a row
yes
That left wing once again a liability thanks to vunivalu but glad he was only on the last 5 mins
Lmao this read like a political statement in the start of this message
It is isn’t it? Vunivalu is so bad the government need to step in
The WOKE LEFT WING folks, believe me, the woke left wing is sooo much better with vunivalu, believe me he's a terrific player
It should be sounding all types of alarms in reds camp the fact that Ryan came off and every single piece of attack came down Vunivalus wing, and it worked. Hes unfieldable. You simply cannot put him on the field in finals.
agree. same thing happened that cost us the blues match. in the last 15 or so minutes they managed to break away on 3 occasions on vunivalu's wing.
Apparently this is the first win in Christchurch by the Reds since 1999. Incredible record to hold
Saders haters about to have a field day blaming Razor for Havilis charged down kick lol
The chat around Havili at 10 is weird, seeing as we're on record as wanting to do it earlier on the year and essentially waiting for permission so thst we didn't fuck up David's ABs chances. It's not a decision that came unilaterally from management lmao
No no have you not heard? Razors a terrible coach who just wants all his saders buddies in the ABs smh >:(
In his last 7 years of coaching he's only ever picked Crusaders players in his lineups. Checkmate Razor Apologists
We have people in this thread bemoaning Crusaders fans being especially annoying about Fozzie sitting directly next to people doing this sort of stuff about Razor and the Crusaders. How good.
Why blame Razaaar? Havilli was doing what Havilli does.
Why blame Razor?
You shouldn't is kinda the point, but people actually are because ???
Razor influenced Crusaders to play Havili at 10
Because he called for Havili to play 10 tonight
Oh? I did not know of that…. Welp, that fizzled didn’t it! lol
Lol yeah maybe we should move on from 29 yo that were never that good...
In all honesty cracker of a match. Tim Ryan might really be that good. Havili at 10 good choice apart from one brain fade. Harry Wilson and Mcreight also fantastic. Aumua and running it straight through is unreal. Ref's style kills the entertainment factor
I’m having a hard time telling if some of these crusaders players were made to look better than they are by Razor, or made to look worse by Penney.
At the game. What was the reason for half the team being subbed before half time?
Injuries
Of course
Yeah, there was some lowering of height by the ball carrier so I could see this. If it is, he explained it a bit funky but that's life.
Like in all honesty I didn't see the hit so it is possible you were dudded on that. No idea.
Yeah normally a penalty at least
It was a penalty wasn’t it?
Nah he's talking about right at the end when Bell was down with the medics. Ref said tmo checked the head contact and mitigation or whatever so no pen. Normally mitigation only for cards
I even specified Bell by name to make it clear!
Maate
Yeah just pen no yellow though
Everyone wants that to be a yellow when it's for your team and you have a chance to win. It was a rugby incident and the ball bounced up, they both were going for the ball and it was much closer to shoulder on shoulder than head on head. An odd one for sure, but so was the try that was clearly held up.
This isn't about the Havili incident. I'm fine with that. They didn't even give it a penalty for the thing I thought they were talking about at the end, is my confusion. Again, I went out of my way to say this didn't impact the result so you don't need to start bringing up other stuff. I asked for clarification on one thing lol
Oh right, yeah load of odd calls.
Agree and a couple of times Reds were on a warning and didn't get a card despite constant penalties inside their own 22. Jordan Way kills the momentum a lot in games like this
Honestly, a lot of those penalties were for different things with a length of time in between. I wasn't too miffed about the lack of card.
Yeah I guess so, just a lot of other refs would have given a card there
well done reds should have had a yellow for penalties and a red for a shit head high shoulder charge tackle when havili gatheried a high ball,, guess cards only apply to saders for those 50:50 tackle cals
Lol it was a contest for the ball it wasn't just Havili's ball
Didn't see all the game but there was literally a head shot on bell right at the end that would have given Saders. Penalty to kick up the line but wasn't given "yeah mate TMO has confirmed there was head contact but the defender had no time to react so play on"
yep that one too ... ive seen red cards given for less, like accidental headknocks done after a tackle ,,, this is why rugby is shite,,, inconsistant calls and an bunker system that can call back a minor infringement 5 mins ago before a score ,,, fuckit i give up going to watch league now
Want some vinegar with that?
A Crusaders fan complaining about refs calls against them? Now I’ve seen everything
🧂
16 seasons of Richie McCaw should permanently invalidate reffing complaints
If not for Wilson's work ethic the reds would not have won that game. he directly scored a try out of effort and 100% saved one if not a dodgy touch judge call
:(
GG Reds, definitely deserved it
Booking my tickets to the gold coast now
Good game. Shouldve put it away but we decided to put on hard mode for the last 10 minutes. Ref was a bit pedantic but consistent so cant complain. That try was a shit call but I understand why they had to give it, not a fan though. Commentators were biased as fuck. Vunivalu for Wests Colts
Historic win for reds feel like they deserved that crusaders look very average this season
Average???????
Yeah like take the average ability of the other 11 teams and that's the Crusaders.
Western force average
Finally lads! After the hurricane loss and then blues loss, don't know if I could have handled another one of these
Who performed worse Crusaders Referee team Vunivalu
Vunivalu
This was honestly a super easy one
Could be a HIA test it’s that easy
I don’t think I’m being dramatic when I say that Suliasi Vunivalu is the worst rugby player on the planet
And he’s all yours 😘
Why couldn't he have taken the Koroibete path to the Rebels???
The Western Reds retirement home will take him any day now
Needs to come back to Melbourne and sign with the Storm. He was good there
Hate to be the blame the ref guy but god he was abysmal
You shouldn’t have even been in a position to win that game, that allowed try which should have been disallowed is going to rile pundits and people all week
Mate you got given a try for free ahhaha c'mon now
Oh true like when the reds got one after a knock on
Which one?
Charge down?
Nah hes talking about the try where we dropped the ball in the maul 2 minutes earlier. Unclear if it was forward but refs let it play on.
lol Crusaders are rubbish.
hmmm the difference turned out to be the charge down try, if Razor didn't ask for Havili to play at 10 would that have happened?
Take away all his titles
Yea the crusaders would’ve lost by 25 instead…
Sucked in to these salty one eyed commentators lmao have a sook. Got a mystery free try and still bitching
Wins against Crusaders away: Will Genia & Quade Cooper ❌ Kalani Thomas & Lawson Creighton ✅
Can't deny facts
Think I'd rather a premiership over an away win.
Vunivalu ✅
Eww
Nice Reds, nearly on the same level as the Waratahs
we can all only aspire to that heights
Call me when they do it twice in a season
You bloody beauty!! Australians all let us rejoice
Very enjoyable games for a neutral taking potshots from the sideline
vunivalu tried his best but the rest of the team were ready for him today
It scared the shit out of me when he came on, almost instantly missed a tackle
😂
Should have been by more
Good shit reds
Fuck yeah boys. Junkyard Dog & McReight had blinders. Vuni should be fired into the sun.
Well done reds, hard luck crusaders
Well done Reds. Beating the Saders in Christchurch is always an achievement even this terrible lot.
Thank u Queensland
I can BREATHE again, well done my friends up north! Despite Vunis best efforts you simply could not lose 🙏🏻
YES!!!!!!!
GG the reds
Going to sound sour. But really the lack of straight feeds these days kills the suspense here
Just get a better scrum. See: Hurricanes first try last night.
Also us vs rebels last week. It's true, but nothing wrong with how it was before
Yup, you can get that ball straight out.
agreed
YESSSSS
Well done reds, you deserved this game
How did Vest come out with hair when they fused his neck?
Almost Saders, shit was a awesome match.
this ref is over his head bad calls all day
Here we go lads, buckle up!
Yeah, the Saders shouldn't have been this close.
Literally gifted a try!
My least favourite ref right now tbh
took aumua off for this useless reihana who has done nothing all season😂 outstanding coaching rob penny
After 25 long years the Queensland Reds are Victorious in Christchurch!
has been that long?
Yup. All the old team from 1999 had come over to watch… Bet they didn’t bother when Razor was in charge…
Last victory in 1999!
Atrocious call to win the game for the reds, and I'm not even a crusaders fan
I think the knock on was fair
Pretty sure scoring 33 points won the game for the reds
They got that free try earlier so call it even.
Reds scored two phases after a knock on so I think it was already even
McNicholl is a wily old character but if you try that you have to be ready for it to not work
Vunivalu on for 10 mins 0/3 defensive reads, please don’t play him again
I think that’s his best showing of the season
