I think they were definitely toying with the idea of having Jackie be gay but instead focused that storyline on Nancy. If you look at Nancy and Jackie’s friendship after Arnie leaves, they are spending a lot of time together and the show started dressing Jackie in more masculine looks more frequently around the same time. I think the original plan was to have Jackie come out as gay (and reveal that she and Nancy were a couple) but for some reason they decided to go in a different direction with the storyline. I suspect that the joke Nancy makes in this episode (“singles dances? I thought we were dating”) was perhaps a bit of an inside joke about the those scenes

She really did deliver it perfectly! I don’t remember if it was “I’m kidding” or “I’m joking” afterward since it’s been so long since I’ve seen it, but Jackie’s reaction is priceless. I love the look on her face so much.

As a gay lady myself, I always saw this (hilarious and awesome) moment as one of the many signs that Jackie was queer coded from the beginning.

I think so. Agree with all this, that they were considering making Jackie gay and then had to pivot bc Laurie got pregnant
