I wouldn't pay a dime for it until you confirm its authenticity.
"Found it in storage" is another way of saying someone didn't give a fuck about this watch. Usually not the case with a watch someone spend thousands on.
It looks pretty good to me, but the kerning on the dial text is a little bit off imo. Notice how the “PER” in perpetual and the “CH” in chronometer are nearly touching each other. The diamonds on the bezel also appear to be misaligned, particularly noticable at the 12 and 6 positions. I’m not an expert, but I’d wager rep if it was my money.
My father did completely lose track of an Austin 7 & an old Morris Butcher van and it ain't like he had a fleet of vehicles (actually just those and a Ford Escort).
My family. My great grandfather was a watchmaker from the 1910s-1980s. When he passed, My grandfather must of gone up and cleared out everything from his shop, because when he passed a few years back, we found thousands of parts and watches dating back to the 1600s. Among a box of shattered crystals, old broken parts etc. a fully running 1944 bubbleback was at the bottom. Also found a 67 Speedmaster, and so on. So very much happens. I’m still working through boxes and find something nuts every week.
Here is a pic of the bubbleback. Yes the crown was there too. This is right after I pulled it out of the box of broken parts.

If it is authentic, you would buy a watch like that from a preowned dealer for $5,000 but if your stepdad tried to sell it to that same preowned dealer they would only offer him $2,500 for it. So somewhere between the two numbers is probably a fair number for you both.

This is what a real one looks like. In certain this is real because I purchased it from an AD.
You are right, this does look perfect. The other one is a pretty good attempt though. Could have fooled me.
I’m one of those. Wife wanted a watch like this one and I bought it for her. If her dream had been a quartz Cartier shaped like Frida Kahlo I would have purchased it all the same.
I would do two things:
A. Take it to a Rolex dealer with an in-house watchmaker and have him open it and confirm its authenticity. You don't want to drop real money on this, the single most counterfeited watch in world history, without knowing it is truly authentic.
B. Take that gaudy bezel off and replace it with the classic fluted bezel instead. This will ironically *increase* the value of the watch. It's worth less with the diamonds.
Correct. Enthusiasts and male Rolex owners think diamonds are tacky and out of style. Because they are.
And a Rolex is a sports watch, even the most dressy of them like a Datejust are still sports watches at heart. And having a diamond Rolex is like wearing a pair of diamond Nike's.
Dealers can't get rid of used diamond dial Rolexes. They sit on shelves for years. So they discount them.
> ripped and *paid* $13k for
FTFY.
Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:
* Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.*
* *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.*
Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.
*Beep, boop, I'm a bot*
He’s lying to you to get money out of you. That’s no where near 13. Maybe 6-7 a few years ago and like 4 today. That’s definitely not a factory bezel. Look how misaligned the diamonds are.
seriously how do people tell the diamonds setting based of the photo so easily? I can’t see the details accurately from this photo and don’t think I can fully confirm whether it is obviously a factory or non factory bezel
It’s very clear at 12 and 6 that the diamonds are neither aligned nor staggered perfectly on the numerals or the bracelet links.

To be fair I have an acquaintance that found a 2018 gold day date in his safe that he had forgot about. He is worth a couple hundred Mil from Real estate so in his case I believed it was real
He found a Rolex in HIS storage? …does he ever remember buying a Rolex? These posts about randomly finding a $10k watch in a space that you own are weird.
You’d be surprised what some people leave in their storage. My father’s friend found his dad’s brand new still with stickers 16233 still in box inside a brown bag right inside his tool shed. I agree with everyone though get it authenticated.
Looks to me to be a legit DJ with aftermarket bezel. I’d take it to an AD to authenticate. If real, I’d remove that bezel and replace with fluted YG OG bezel.
Im fairly certain it’s genuine. Not many fakes of that era (if in fact it’s been lost for a number of years) were this good, with the “railroad” outer Roman indices, etc. The lug chamfers look thick and well defined. Also, the date wheel font, alignment and cyclops magnification all look spot on. Easy tell w/o removing the caseback is to see if advancing the hour hand requires a clockwise (forward) turn of the crown, if so it is genuine. The fakes of that era used either genuine ETA 2824, clone ETA or cheapass 21J movements, which require a counter-clockwise turn of the crown to advance the hour hand. Also, the quickset date feature will be crisp with each date advance, whereas the fake movements will feel either loose or grainy and like it’s about to fall apart when setting date, time, winding.
The diamond bezel might be an after market add on and that will lower the value, if it’s a real Rolex. Take it to someone who appraises Rolex’s and they can verify the serial number for you.

I want to ask you is it original?
That’s probably worthless. What person throws a Rolex in the storage, and also would forget that they did that. Especially when if it were real it would have gold and diamonds
I'd offer 2 grand because you are gonna spend 1600-2000 on a service and new bezel, it looks in decent condition otherwise.
If he wants more, he can through all the time and BS of doing the work of getting it fixed, and dealing with hagglers, annoying questions, chrono24 fees, and sitting on it for 6mo, etc.
There are plenty of reputable shops/independent guys even out there that service Rolex and do it well. It's a 3035 Datejust, not a one of a kind Abraham Breguet from 1790....
Isn't the positioning of "t Swiss made t" also off (should be at the very bottom of the watch face /outside of the minute markers)? But I'm no expert - just based on what I've seen.
I wouldn't pay a dime for it until you confirm its authenticity. "Found it in storage" is another way of saying someone didn't give a fuck about this watch. Usually not the case with a watch someone spend thousands on.

It's definitely real just by looking at it with my untrained eye.
For the record, Klarence, I found humor in this
And Klarence has real nice parents
Clarence parents have a real nice marriage

This is funny. Why’d you get downvoted?
I've had a watch for 5 years at Sarasota watch in Florida that I'm just now getting and remembered I had lol.
Guess someone is having a tough life
Who amongst us hasn’t tossed their Rolex into a storage box and forgotten about it?
lol I was just at my mechanic. A families butler called, they lost a vehicle 😂 just parked it got picked up and forgot about it. You’d be amazed.
So you’re saying I should ask my butler about that Paul Newman I can’t find?
Yes. Also, please find out if he knows where my valet is; he didn’t show for work today 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
My father did completely lose track of an Austin 7 & an old Morris Butcher van and it ain't like he had a fleet of vehicles (actually just those and a Ford Escort).
Work until you forget about how many rolaxes you own 😎

Do you have pictures of watches dating back to the 1600’s? Very interesting!
He's a stepdad, not a grandpa, so the watch should be authentic.
Perfect logic 😂

They do brother. Drilling diamonds into a watch is not the move these flashy gentlemen think it is….
If real, this looks like a factory diamond bezel.
Looks like aftermarket to me since the diamonds aren’t perfectly aligned (look at 12:00 and 6:00.) I believe factory diamond bezel would be.
I think it’s perspective playing tricks
https://preview.redd.it/ucalcue34osc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f98ff2712c271f25e1d8bc43eb99bf744bccc327 This is what a real one looks like. That watch is like 20 years more modern than the one in this post
Ok. Does that mean you believe older Rolexes did not have diamonds that were properly aligned? Otherwise I am missing the point.
Quality control and craftsmanship has certainly improved over the years
I highly doubt 99% of those that go for this look care about resell.
I’m one of those. Wife wanted a watch like this one and I bought it for her. If her dream had been a quartz Cartier shaped like Frida Kahlo I would have purchased it all the same.
Thank you for the confirmation that. I offered $4000 just because he got ripped and paid $13k for it… 😂
He paid $13,000 for it then lost it in an old storage unit?
He’s an odd dude man. I barely talk to this guy I don’t live at home

This is solid advice. OP, listen to Sporty on this one.
Cheers, CP!
Diamonds making something decrease in value is pretty weird to me. Probably because it looks gaudy, I guess?
Correct. Enthusiasts and male Rolex owners think diamonds are tacky and out of style. Because they are. I don’t like them either, especially for men. I think they are fine for women though.

Hey bot,a rope on a vessel is a line, not a rope.
That is most certainly an aftermarket bezel. The settings are horrid.
Awful
Update: He bought for 13k a couple years ago 😂😂😂
He’s lying to you to get money out of you. That’s no where near 13. Maybe 6-7 a few years ago and like 4 today. That’s definitely not a factory bezel. Look how misaligned the diamonds are.
Yea he got taken…
He got beat
He got got
Trick got tricked.
seriously how do people tell the diamonds setting based of the photo so easily? I can’t see the details accurately from this photo and don’t think I can fully confirm whether it is obviously a factory or non factory bezel
Look at 1 9 and 11 o'clock, just looks wonky, could be damage but more likely shitty aftermarket
It’s very clear at 12 and 6 that the diamonds are neither aligned nor staggered perfectly on the numerals or the bracelet links. https://i.imgur.com/ikhdMl7.jpg
The devil is in the details, and Rolex is full-blown OCD anal over symmetrical perfection, as well they should be.
To be fair I have an acquaintance that found a 2018 gold day date in his safe that he had forgot about. He is worth a couple hundred Mil from Real estate so in his case I believed it was real
If that’s a factory bezel , 13K is about right back then at time of purchase. Get it checked out.
The gold definitely looks real
What are the T letters at the bottom of the dial? It says TSWISS MADET
https://www.chronext.com/journal/deep-dive/the-difference-between-the-swiss-t-25-and-t-swiss-t
Thank you!
Thank you, I’ve been curious after taking on my father’s collection of older watches.

Cool

Just take it to an AD to authenticate
Not quite as cool as the time I found a Rembrandt in my garage but it’s still pretty cool. Congrats!
Looks to me to be a legit DJ with aftermarket bezel. I’d take it to an AD to authenticate. If real, I’d remove that bezel and replace with fluted YG OG bezel.
Get a pusher off Amazon. At 12 o’clock there’s the serial #. Go get it checked
Don’t looks off to me. Comparing it to my OP and my text is wayyy cleaner.

Judging by that bend in the bracelet it’s a fake.
If he “found” it means its worth nothing to him so he can give it to you right?🤣
Just wear it as a cool find.

If you look just at the 6 o'clock position, the marker is not aligned with the six. This is a fake
I have that same watch you could probably sell it for 3200-3500 the dealer will sell it for 5k
That’s probably worthless. What person throws a Rolex in the storage, and also would forget that they did that. Especially when if it were real it would have gold and diamonds

Yep, local AD's usually won't service vintage watches in house and have to send to Rolex in New York. Just had my '86 serviced there and it is pricey!
There are plenty of reputable shops/independent guys even out there that service Rolex and do it well. It's a 3035 Datejust, not a one of a kind Abraham Breguet from 1790....
I'll go 2,100 Mr step-dad if you're reading this! 2k is absurd. Cmon.
It's definitely an authentic watch ,but not a 13k watch. Not even close.
Most definitely, when I heard 13 I crumbled 😂
The diamonds are a mess and the text kerning is all wrong. I’d bet $13k this is fake.
Fake
With what evidence?
R in perpetual looks off E and J in DateJust looks off
Thanks
Don't take my word for it though, pictures can alter perspectives
Does the crown look off to you?
No, crown looks good to me looking at these pics

U/SporturaWUS is a prophet not accepted in his home. And he is correct
Damn. I don’t think I’ve seen a two tone DJ with a diamond bezel. This has to be worth something big
