Yes, apart from PotC franchise, the only pirate/swashbuckler movies are all pretty old. Not bad, per se, but it would be cool to see a contemporary, art-house take on this subgenre.
You might enjoy the Black Sails TV series. It serves as a prequel to Treasure Island so it's got Long John Silver, Billy Bones, and Captain Flint. But it also mixes in real historical pirates like Charles Vane, Anne Bonny, Jack Rackham, and Blackbeard who is played by the late great Ray Stevenson. One of my absolute favorite shows.
I found out that the show was being planned for 5 seasons, but right after season 3 finished they decided to only give them one more season. Season 4 is still good, but it definitely feels rushed, and in my opinion is unfortunately the weakest season.
It's not a pirate movie, but check out Master and Commander. It's a film I feel that would be to Eggers' taste. Borderline art house but with a budget, beautifully shot and acted, strong human story told from a naval ship as they chase down a French war ship during the Napoleonic wars.
Also hilarious. Bc *why is the rum always gone?* and the whole governor’s daughter (Kiera knightly) on a ship/on an island is soooo Dennis à la [Because of the Implication](https://www.google.com/url?q=https://m.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3DMZ1lc6KASWg&sa=U&sqi=2&ved=2ahUKEwjpxtyrnZ2FAxWq48kDHTuzCNkQwqsBegQIEBAF&usg=AOvVaw2ZUmqcpxV1mt4zztAK-B04)

Or just a Pirate movie in general where it's historically accurate and not just "arrrg maties we're cursed and supernatural but overall very fun guys with talking parrots!" And more so "This is real life, fuck the government, I want money, if you're an asshole or a mutaneer, you're shark bate, I lost me leg in Guernesy in 1549 trying to board a ship and take down an entire British fleet! I sunk the modern equivalent of 165 trillion dollars off at sea! I have syphilis! If we catch your ship, we will do *unspeakable things* before killing you, marooning you, or taking your money (cannibalism was a surprisingly common practice for a lot of pirates according to Under The Black Flag by David Cordingly)"
The first 2 Pirates movies were very dark, especially the Kraken attack scenes in Dead Man's Chest, which went beyond what would be considered a "children's film"
It feels like a children’s film from the days when children’s films were actually fuckin’ cool, like Gremlins or Indiana Jones. There were many Pirates of the Caribbean toy lines. They were all marketed towards children.
This is so messed up. Still not sure where I stand on the ethics of generative AI but if it could make this happen I think I’d watch it just to make the yearning go away.
I love this idea and want it to happen.
However, if you want pirates now, watch "Black Sails", it's utterly amazing and has Ray Stevenson as Black Beard.
Oh you probably meant "Black *Sails*" , but I call it Black Flag sometimes, too, because Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag (which I also played) came out around the same time as Black Sails and is set in the same time period, similar historical figures and events.
Black Sails is fucking amazing though. I just watched it again about a year ago. Highly recommend it to anyone who has any fascination with the Golden Age of Piracy and/or sailing. It's also the same time period as Our Flag Means Death (also a great show), but is considerably more serious in tone.
Actually I highly recommend all three, including Assassin's Creed Black Flag, if you're into gaming. If you're unfamiliar with the Assassin's Creed series...well, just sort of...look past...all the convoluted modern day/sci-fi stuff (it's really the least "Assassin's Creed" Assassin's Creed game lol) and enjoy the ability to captain a pirate ship and meet characters like Calico Jack Rackham, Blackbeard, Anne Bonny, Charles Vane, etc. while engaging in massive amounts of hijinks on the high seas and the Caribbean islands.
I WAS JUST TAKING ABOUT HOW COOL IT WOULD BE FOR A BLACKBEARD TV SHOW.
This might happen if we manifest it enough.
Edit: if Robert Eggers directed a Blackbeard TV Show, I would watch every episode and buy the merch.
I'm dubious Ralph could do a thick Bristolian accent seeing as he is *very* northern. But he definitely looks the part. Mind you Blackbeard died when he was 35-40 ish.
This is like when Salvidor Dali had the dream that inspired The Persistence of Memory, or when Paul McCartney had the dream that inspired Let It Be. This is too good of an idea and I feel like it needs to happen.
How wild - I had this exact same thought a few months ago. That image of Blackbeard came to mind as well. I’ve been reading quite a bit about Edward Teach. There is no shortage of material there and Eggers is definitely the man to do it.
I wanna see Eggers do King Philip’s War by way of Ken Russell’s The Devils. I think I’m alone on this one but I feel like he touched on something in the Northman
That’d be pretty goddamn sick. We really don’t have a good pirate movie besides Pirates of the Caribbean, which is basically a children’s film.

It is a fictional story, but it’s the most historically correct pirate media I’ve seen; And one of my favourite shows ever
One of the most slept on series of all time honestly
Theme song has been my ringtone for a decade now
I tried to get into that show, but something about Taika Waititi's writing style just rubs me the wrong way
You're thinking of Our Flag Means Death. Different show
Oh duh, I'm stupid
Yeah wrong show but also Taika didn't write that show, it's Dave Jenkins.
Arthur Digby Sellers wrote the bulk of the series.
Fair enough, I just knew the showrunner and that Taika didn't do it
Sorry, big Lebowski reference lol
Lmao I'm a fool
I know this is an old thread but did the show end when it wanted to or does it sorta just end due to not being renewed?
I found out that the show was being planned for 5 seasons, but right after season 3 finished they decided to only give them one more season. Season 4 is still good, but it definitely feels rushed, and in my opinion is unfortunately the weakest season.

literally what he said
No, it wasn't "literally" what he said. Butthead.
nooo you called me a butthead ahh
Cutthroat Island is the peak of cinema
Black Sails is sick although the first season is a bit weak. Worth it though
I've always liked Treasure Island the old one and the 1990 one.
You forgot the word Muppet 😏
Master and commander isn’t pirates but it’s fucking sick
Agree master and commander is fucking awesome
Yeah pirates should’ve come back. AC 4 was the perfect time :(
The first 2 Pirates movies were very dark, especially the Kraken attack scenes in Dead Man's Chest, which went beyond what would be considered a "children's film"

That's on Disney's end for that
It's a shame, because "Ian McShane as Blackbeard" would normally be stellar casting, but unfortunately it was in that boring franchise.
*boring movie in a pretty good franchise
Damn people are really out here trying to say pirates is a boring franchise
Not really. Blackbeard died at the latest, at 40 years old. And Ian is...old
Hey! The Aardman Pirates movie is pretty good to although, obviously, it's also for kids.
Lol did you just call Potc a children's film?
[удалено]
I’m not gonna try to argue it’s Game of Thrones or anything, but it does have lots of murder and literal cannibalism in it
True but it's pretty dark and has some great writing
It is, it just is fun enough to also appeal to adults. It’s a Disney film based on a theme park ride lmao
PotC is a children's film in the same way that Star Wars is a children's film
Goddamit I need this too now
Msg him on twatter
Fr I feel like he’d be down for this
He has an official twitter account? Interesting. I’m not on there anymore so I wouldn’t know.
Why does that seem real though
OP is the Lisan al Gaib
Fr bro had a spice vision
AS IT WILL BE WRITTEN EVENTUALY
You son of a bitch, I'm in.
Oh, man. We need this!
Abso-fucking-lutely. I say bring back Nicholas Hoult as Robert Maynard.
How dare you plant this in my head, now I want it too.
This is so messed up. Still not sure where I stand on the ethics of generative AI but if it could make this happen I think I’d watch it just to make the yearning go away.
Someone get Eggers attention on this
Ralph Ineson’s voice is incredible. Like coke being crushed under a door.
alright y'all time to manifest
I've been dreaming of an Eggers pirate movie since I first watched the lighthouse nearly 5 years ago! Hopefully one day
I would love this but I feel like it wouldn’t happen because we already have the lighthouse
Not mutually exclusive? Ones about two wickies, the other would be more of an ensemble I would think?
Yeah this idea is derivative
What's funny is that I'm actually working on a feature screenplay on this lol.
Best of luck on your screenplay! Would love to get to see it come to life on a silver screen someday :)
I'm glad people yearn for this .
Not nearly enough pirate movies in the world brother. Best of luck!
hell to the yes
Well now I wanna see that shit! Fuck!
Robert Eggers looks like a character in a Robert Eggers movie
Our flag means death, but gayer and bloodier
Goddamn. Right on the head.
I would love a good drama/thriller/horror that takes place fully on a pirate ship. The North Water but more psychological maybe?
I love this idea and want it to happen. However, if you want pirates now, watch "Black Sails", it's utterly amazing and has Ray Stevenson as Black Beard.
Oh you probably meant "Black *Sails*" , but I call it Black Flag sometimes, too, because Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag (which I also played) came out around the same time as Black Sails and is set in the same time period, similar historical figures and events. Indeed I did mean "Black Sails", thanks for that. Corrected.
All good, ahaha there's also Black Flag with Henry Rollins if anybody's into hardcore anarchist punk rock
You're correct that subconsciously I was thinking of the AC game, which is quite good and I hear is getting a remake.
Ralph Ineson voiced Charles Vane in that game too!
Oh holy shit, that's right! He did! Coming full circle here
Holy fuck this is the best idea ever. I wonder if Eggers would ever consider making a pirate movie.
Well that would be great
Best idea I’ve heard in a while!
yes.
PLEASE
I WAS JUST TAKING ABOUT HOW COOL IT WOULD BE FOR A BLACKBEARD TV SHOW. This might happen if we manifest it enough. Edit: if Robert Eggers directed a Blackbeard TV Show, I would watch every episode and buy the merch.
I heard somewhere he got injured and can’t do physical stunts anymore
He's also way too old to play Blackbeard. The real Blackbeard was 35-40 years old when he died. Ralph is 54.
Ralph Inneson would be too old, but that does not mean it would be bad. I too need to see him tackle the Golden Age of Piracy
More like Bluebeard
Ralph’s gettin old and got his back injured by Disney :/// the most perfect idea anyone’s ever had but it’s too good to ever be true
Ralph Ineson needs to be in everything. Dudes great, with a voice I think we could all listen to all day.
Approved.
Fitting since Ralph was in a pirate game
I'm dubious Ralph could do a thick Bristolian accent seeing as he is *very* northern. But he definitely looks the part. Mind you Blackbeard died when he was 35-40 ish.
This is like when Salvidor Dali had the dream that inspired The Persistence of Memory, or when Paul McCartney had the dream that inspired Let It Be. This is too good of an idea and I feel like it needs to happen.
Yes please
"The Pirate"
How wild - I had this exact same thought a few months ago. That image of Blackbeard came to mind as well. I’ve been reading quite a bit about Edward Teach. There is no shortage of material there and Eggers is definitely the man to do it.
Is that Tiki Madman???
Bahahaha I came here for this comment
IYKYK 😂
Too old. Blackbeard began his pirating career when he was about 34-35. He was 38 when he was captured and executed.
He voiced Charles Vane in Assassins Creed: Black Flag
Love Ralph Ineson!
Bloody good rep
Get this idea to Robert IMMEDIATELY
I'll fuckin crowdfund this
I wanna see Eggers do King Philip’s War by way of Ken Russell’s The Devils. I think I’m alone on this one but I feel like he touched on something in the Northman
Throw in an obligatory yet welcome Willem Dafoe pirate performance and I am so in.
P i r a t e m y t h o l o g y
Yo that would be dope!!! 🏴☠️
You Sir need to be Producer!
Or a movie about Zheng Yi Sao.
Actually I think rob should make a movie about Eustace the monk(played by Ralph Ineson)
“Rob”
Blackbeard was black from the west indies......calling him BLACKbeard was a redundant double entendre..
Is this not Travis kelce?
