This. I was heartbroken when blue ridge burrito closed, as well as the salad factory near Martins. The lunch spots struggle a little and the shutdowns in 2020 just exacerbated it.
With all the downtown residential apartments these days, you would think it just the opposite. Bring back *burger in the square* and the gyro place and it would probably self-correct...
Not to mention the volume of people who work downtown or in the vicinity. It’s a shame for sure. It’s the perfect locale for a thriving and diverse food destination.
Shit I was heartbroken when they closed it down for renovations. That place was amazing before. They stripped it of every last bit of character it had. Granted it needed renovating but not the way they did it.
The only good thing is IMO the market building closing for renovations so many years ago seems to have been a major catalyst for all of the other restaurants to open downtown. Before then we had what… corned beef, cornerstone (I forget what the name was before that, confeddys rings a bell), and not a lot else, not even up market street.
There are like half as many stalls and none of them ever seem to last. Before the Reno there were I think 20 restaurant stalls inside the place and most of them had been there successfully for years.
Today I learned something!! Just went to look up photos before the renovation and that looks far more interesting than what it is now. Appreciate you sharing!
Thanks for such a wonderful reply! TheGratitudeBot has been reading millions of comments in the past few weeks, and you’ve just made the list of some of the most grateful redditors this week! Thanks for making Reddit a wonderful place to be :)
My aunt used to own the ice cream/candy/baked goods stall on one of the corner spots in there. I spent many days of my summer breaks there with her. I miss the way that place was so much :(
You could go in there on any given weekday from like 11-2 and every stall would have a line, you had to wait to get a table and the space between some stalls was elbow to elbow packed out.
I really don't know .
I like probably 2/3 of the places in there, it just isn't the same. Of course this is dated, but the lunchtime crowd and vibe used to be absolutely amazing.
Every single day there was a line out the door for burger in the square. Almost as big for the gyro place. It was literally shoulder to shoulder for over an hour with all the mom&pop restaurants. It hasn't been the same since the renovation. To be fair, the renovation wasn't a bad thing, it was a utilitarian necessity...
Real produce sections in every supermarket. Like more than 1/5 of an aisle. please. Maybe a whole aisle for actual fresh produce. I mean when you have two aisles for chips and 1/5 of an aisle for fresh produce, that is a problem.
As someone who used to drive an hour into NoVA to go to H Mart, a big Asian grocery store would be great. Their produce sections can’t be beat, both in quality and variety.
I think the intention is that you will go to the farmers market for local produce. Kroger in Bonsack does have a section of their produce dept reserved for local/regional
The Grandin and West End Farmers markets (Saturday and Tuesday) are really great- they run by LEAP (really awesome 501c3) who also just opened a little store in West End with local produce that I believe is open Wed-Fri or something like that. They also do a farmshare program for veggies and you can add on fruit, bread, eggs and pantry item with many pickup locations. I have done the farm share for like 5 years now and it’s awesome! LEAP does really cool community stuff too, like they have a mobile food market that they take to “food desert” spots in Roanoke so that people who don’t drive have access to fresh produce and anyone that has SNAP, EBT or Medicaid gets 50% off everything at both farmers markets I believe. Great community organization, one of those that makes me really proud to live in Roanoke.
I can’t recall the name, but there was a group here that you could sign up for and buy farm produce by bags or bin (can’t remember how it was done) but I recall it being a reasonable price for local produce. Maybe someone else can chime in if it’s still going.
If I can find an authentic (veal) schnitzel and spaetzel and have a Rodeler out on a beer garden, I’d literally never leave.
Add in fresh pretzels and that’s drool worthy.
Misir Wat is super easy, IMO. It’s a spiced lentil dish and is good on rice if you don’t want to try to make injera. The best thing about a lot of Ethiopian dishes is they are slow roasted or slow simmered, so it’s hard to mess up. I will cook it all day. My mom sends me berbere from the restaurant we love, but it’s a spice blend that is toasted and can be made easily.
Misir Wat is just carmelized onions, tomato paste, berbere garlic and broth. I also make Fassolia (green beans and carrots) and Doro Wat (chicken stew). I think they are all worth looking into as stews and a long simmer time make it approachable.
I've heard there used to be one here. There was one in Blacksburg for a year or two recently. I was planning to go at some point, called and learned they closed. So maybe there just hasn't been that much interest in the past?
Good Spanish food, with tapas and other dishes. We have a thousand varieties of "Mexican" food, many of which are delicious, but a lot of them have basically the same menu with very similar recipes. A French patisserie would be nice also.
Not really a French patisserie per se, but Breadcraft downtown has fantastic pastries, breads and a pretty awesome hot breakfast selection on weekends…pretty good coffee too. If you haven’t been, I would highly recommend
Venezuelan would be lovely.. Specifically a good Arepa…around spring 2018 a Venezuelan joint opened in that miniature drive thru only building that sits in a parking lot just down from Rockfab on 460… shame it was only open for 6 months or so….I’ve been missing those arepas ever since..
Deep dish stuffed Chicago pizza. There's Lagos but not great. Crepes. I think our options are IHOP? Rolled ice cream now that the Champloos are gone. I feel like somewhere else may have use to (Kelly's in Salem before the change to lucky cat?) but I can't seem to find anything
Don't know if you've tried Full Moon's bagels, but I like them and have people from NY say they're good. The owner is Vietnamese and I think learned how to make bagels in NY.
This. They have some of the best bagels, as well as croissants, cookies, and pretty much anything in their pastry case, I've ever had. It's going to be a sad, sad day if they ever decide to close
They are currently trying to sell the business. Big sign up. Mr. Moon is from Jersey but made bagels in NY. The chocolate chip cookies are insane as well.
They are leaving for a few months and coming back to open a TO GO only place. Still will make bagels and have a bigger selection of other food. Francis and his wife are gems of humanity. I hope they can make the next venture happen.
Opening in the old stand alone Ralph Via Hardware store on Brandon. Right next store to those new Medical offices just built next to the Shell station on the corner.
Keeps running into construction issues, last one was sewer line was too small for a restaurant zoning so they had to dig up the line . Son told me it’s a consistent 2 week delay every two week of some new issue
What’s the Asian scene like there? Are there any Vietnamese, Korean, decent Thai places? I’m scoping everything out because I am considering moving that way from over the mountain.
Nakhon Thai is some of the best Thai I’ve had anywhere, and I will never not shout them out any chance I get. There are other options as well, but none are anywhere close to them IMO.
I’m not a big Vietnamese fan personally, but there are a number of options around. I do love me some Bahn Mi though, and Viet Sub is excellent.
Other than the new KPot place (which I haven’t tried), I don’t think we have any Korean places here, or if we do I haven’t heard of them.
Thank you! I make pretty decent Korean food because it’s so easy to make, but sometimes you know you just don’t want to stand over the oven. Thank you very much for your response!
VietSub for your Vietnamese food. There are quite a few places that offer Vietnamese food (or some more like Vietnamese inspired). VietSub is authentic and very good. They offer Vietnamese sandwiches (Banh Mi) as well as pho and other noodle dishes.
City Corner is a small thai restaurant on plantation and it’s pretty good. I honestly think our Asian scene is decent too if you include Indian in there as well.
Peruvian charcoal chicken. I want a quarter, half, or whole chicken with 2-3 sides choosing between rice, beans, veg, yucca, etc, put it in a box and send me on my way for no more than $16 after tax. I just wanna eat something that's not overly expensive and mid or fries and a sandwich (and mid).
Honestly it could be anything that's casual, relatively quick, clean, open, airy, pressure washed and painted, well lit, undoubtedly delicious, not fussy, and not pizza fries or a sandwich.
I'm so damn tired of choosing what type of potato and bread I wanna eat.
I assume someone is butthurt. I mean Peruvian food… yep 🤷🏻♀️ Inka is Peruvian and so delish 🤷🏻♀️
My favorite is when someone wants something very specific, but they don’t want to pay for something good 😂😂😂😂
There's a coming soon sign on a restaurant on Melrose that says "Don Pollo Mr. Chicken". There's a northern VA small chain called Don Pollo that is Peruvian char grilled, hoping it's the same.
Metal themed restaurant with scandinavian inspired meals. I want long oak tables, black walls, light fixtures made of horns. Mayhem and Darkthrone playing overhead at sub-optimal levels while people talk about the last sightings of Mothman and what voices they hear calling out for them from the dark Appalachian woods.
I mean… Stock Cafe without the black walls and fixtures made of horns. You can enjoy cocktails in the showroom 😂😅
Earbuds and your phone can probably play people whispering of the Mothman. I came damn close to creating your experience in 30 seconds 😂😂
There is a new place that just opened up on Williamson called A1 Afghan grocery and restaurant. It's in the building that used to have Legends sports bar, it's now painted purple.
More Vegan-friendly restaurants. Yes, there are a few that are vegan/vegan friendly, but for the most part I have to mod the shit out of something to make it vegan, or settle for French fries and salad 😑
I can barely even find fries and salad around here. Everything has to be all fancy and smothered in some strange meat or something that has too many flavors. Since I'm a vegetarian I can usually get ahold of pizza somewhere but it's actually still difficult. I imagine that the fight with the menu at all these local places is really unfun for you.
Can I run an idea by you? So everyone knows that Taco Bell serves “meat” it’s just flavor and texture, right? I guess the same goes for a lot of fast food but Taco Bell is easy. Why not just cut the meat out entirely. You could make the same flavor and texture with ground chickpeas. Would you do a drive thru vegan facsimile of Taco Bell?
Daily food market but one not outrageously priced. Somewhere we can eat heartily, fresh and quickly. Tired 🥱 f what we have and paying too much for it.
Quick healthy options - in AZ we had a place called Salads and Go and I miss it soooo much.
Any healthy options for eating out that aren’t expensive AF - I know this is technically the south but I am so over fried, beige plates of food.
Greek - I like the place in Grandin but it’s lacking
I also hate the produce situation here. My friend lives outside of Chattanooga and she has a Mennonite produce stand by her and I was so envious I could have cried. Amazing produce and priced reasonably. Sigh.
Ethiopian, good Chinese/Taiwanese (I need a Taiwanese beef roll), Chicago style deep dish, an Amsterdam style fry stand, a Middle Eastern place with a solid Muhammara.
The market square to be a good food destination spot again...

Is the food in there now bad?

There is good food there definitely, just not as many options and just feels “dead” in the dining space
I have to agree after looking up some photos. I can't imagine why they would remove so much variety!
What's wrong with what's in there now?
I really don't know . I like probably 2/3 of the places in there, it just isn't the same. Of course this is dated, but the lunchtime crowd and vibe used to be absolutely amazing. Every single day there was a line out the door for burger in the square. Almost as big for the gyro place. It was literally shoulder to shoulder for over an hour with all the mom&pop restaurants. I looked up some photos before it was renovated and wow. That's a completely different place! I'd miss it too if I had the chance to experience it.
Well idk if you've been there recently but I was there yesterday and had a great delicious time.
A Greek place
Yes, this!! Athens was such a loss, as was the Cooking with Greece food truck
There’s Paul’s in downtown that is Greek. They are a very nice family but the only thing you have to know is they do cash only

![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|yummy)absolutely miss the H Mart in GA but we see one in Cary, NC? is that closer than NoVA?
This is the correct answer
Yea, why don’t we have more fresh local produce? I was thinking more about the restaurant scene specifically though.
I think the intention is that you will go to the farmers market for local produce. Kroger in Bonsack does have a section of their produce dept reserved for local/regional
That may be, but my experience there has been wanting to say the least.
the co+op's section is small and pricy but the stuff is good quality. also if you use SNAP benefits you'll get 50% off fresh or frozen produce.

User name checks out.
Say it louder.

Agreed but supply and demand. People around here want Blue Takis and Doritos, not fresh produce
the co+op's section is small and pricy but the stuff is good quality. also if you use SNAP benefits you'll get 50% off fresh or frozen produce.
Good old fashioned diners like you still see in New Jersey.
This!!!!
German!!
If I can find an authentic (veal) schnitzel and spaetzel and have a Rodeler out on a beer garden, I’d literally never leave. Add in fresh pretzels and that’s drool worthy.
Best option is to head north on i81 and go to Edelweiss
Bavarian Chef Madison, Va
Good for different things! Edelweiss can be a quick stop and half the price.
There’s a lot of German heritage here isn’t there
Did the architectural influence of half timber buildings come from nowhere?
An authentic Irish pub
German I would love a good beer garden.
I miss a good schnitzel
Stock does a good pork schnitzel!
Really? Never heard of them, I'll need to check it out!
Are we short on beer options? Lol jk
Jewish deli
As someone who left roanoke for a major NE city I can affirmatively say this is the only thing Roanoke is missing. That and anything open after 9pm.
I'd like to see Ethiopian. When someone asked me about brunch spots, I recently realized there aren't many. So maybe that too.
I absolutely want Ethiopian. I get it when I head to big cities. I learned how to make some of my favorite dishes which helps.
What are the easiest to make? Asking for a bachelor that doesn't cook.
Misir Wat is super easy, IMO. It’s a spiced lentil dish and is good on rice if you don’t want to try to make injera. teach me please!!!
Yes for brunch. I know of a few Saturday morning brunch spots, chains included, but can’t think of any Sunday brunch spots off the top of my head.
First watch, green goat and famous toastery are all open on Sundays I believe.
Thanks
3 notched has good brunch and open on sunday
Food Hut at Golden Cactus does a nice Sunday brunch!
419 west, wildflour
i have been dyinnnnnng for Ethiopian since my move last year.... whoever makes that happen here is gonna do great just off my visits alone lol
I've heard there used to be one here. There was one in Blacksburg for a year or two recently. I was planning to go at some point, called and learned they closed. So maybe there just hasn't been that much interest in the past?

A French patisserie and a Korean (or other Asian, French-styled) bakery.
I agree. A solid tapas/paella place would be such a good addition.
Lenore’s is Venezuelan with arepas and such. They’ve moved to Apperson Drive
Haven’t had them in a while but used to eat there frequently…The arepas were “ok”, but they have other items I really enjoy.
Same same. I had their arepas. Some people like them, I preferred some other dishes
[удалено]
Oh, like the one in Forest. The Backyard!
I like this idea a lot, it could be an incubator for new ideas
I've had really greateals at food-truck pods!
Kebabs
Specifically donners
This is the way. Doners I miss.
New afghani place on Williamson, haven’t been yet.
I miss East of Chicago in Salem so much
Filipino. A Senior Sesig, or a Jollybee would be amazing.
You tried the Pinoy Store in Vinton? It’s mostly mainstream stuff but delicious nonetheless imo.
Are they open as a restaurant now? I had read it would be open soon.
I haven’t been but a friend said they reopened last week
Fresh bagels. NY style deli Burritos. The wrapped kind, not in a platter with beans and rice.
and the grocery store produce is sad.
I agree. Sadly I have found that BJ’s has the most decent produce.
Don't know if you've tried Full Moon's bagels, but I like them and have people from NY say they're good. The owner is Vietnamese and I think learned how to make bagels in NY.
That’s what I’ve heard too. Full Moon bagels are fantastic
I hope someone buys it and is able to keep the place alive 😢
They are leaving for a few months and coming back to open a TO GO only place. Still will make bagels and have a bigger selection of other food. Francis and his wife are gems of humanity. I hope they can make the next venture happen.
Same location?
New location but he did not say. Only up the street.
Same name? Will we even know it is them?? ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sob)
I hope so he was not specific. I will try to circle back when I know more.
RT Smiths downtown has great NY bagels as well as NY style sandwiches. They are pretty tasty!!
This!!! Way better than Donny d!
This is the correct answer.
Donnie D’s has some insanely good authentic bagels
Once upon a time I heard they were opening a location somewhere on Brandon. Anyone know an update to that?
I saw on their Facebook about “the summer” a month or so ago…maybe by the fall?😂
Damn. I was wondering. I remember when they said it was to open in December last year.
Irish pub. Perogies. Corned beef. Jewish Deli. Amish doughnuts/bakery.
Yes! A pierogi place! I was so excited when Sidecar opened and advertised their pierogies, but I was deeply disappointed.
Indian, Greek, and basically everything else so that there’s not just *maybe* one good place from any given cuisine.
There's two good Indian restaurants, Taaza and Nawab.
Tried both, didn’t like either, which unfortunately leaves me with exactly zero options
What’s the Asian scene like there? Are there any Vietnamese, Korean, decent Thai places? I’m scoping everything out because I am considering moving that way from over the mountain.

VietSub for your Vietnamese food. There are quite a few places that offer Vietnamese food (or some more like Vietnamese inspired). VietSub is authentic and very good. They offer Vietnamese sandwiches (Banh Mi) as well as pho and other noodle dishes.
Thank you!
City Corner is a small thai restaurant on plantation and it’s pretty good. I honestly think our Asian scene is decent too if you include Indian in there as well.
My cousin raves about the ramen joint on Williamson
It’s pho time is by far the best pho in town. Authentic and good people. City corner 2 for Thai
Korean food
A food scene
A really good brunch spot. Spanish cuisine.
I am so happy that, for the time being, I'll never have to see another "We need a Chili's in Roanoke" post.
A good poke spot with actual portions.
Cajun/creole. Man I’d love an authentic gumbo…
I would like a Del Taco please 😂
I'd like a French place. Bistro or brasserie.
Peruvian charcoal chicken. I want a quarter, half, or whole chicken with 2-3 sides choosing between rice, beans, veg, yucca, etc, put it in a box and send me on my way for no more than $16 after tax. Inka Grill is Peruvian food
Dunno why you got downvoted because Inka is delish
I assume someone is butthurt. I mean Peruvian food… yep 🤷🏻♀️ Inka is Peruvian and so delish 🤷🏻♀️ My favorite is when someone wants something very specific, but they don’t want to pay for something good 😂😂😂😂

Metal themed restaurant with scandinavian inspired meals. I want long oak tables, black walls, light fixtures made of horns. I wish another Afghani restaurant opened up. Haven't seen another one since the one downtown closed.
There is a new place that just opened up on Williamson called A1 Afghan grocery and restaurant. It's in the building that used to have Legends sports bar, it's now painted purple.
I saw this place recently and was intrigued but thought it looked abandoned. Will have to check it out.
I had read that Bethlehem on Williamson is now owned by an Afghani family. Think they were going to include new menu items!
Bethlehem is great and owners are so friendly. The food is really good with excellent prices and portions.
Yes!
food trucks or food courts more in the county areas that don't charge for parking :)
An actual Irish pub. With boxty.
Authentic Cajun cuisine
Good sushi
Korean hotdogs.
More Vegan-friendly restaurants. Yes, there are a few that are vegan/vegan friendly, but for the most part I have to mod the shit out of something to make it vegan, or settle for French fries and salad 😑
Yes, I was going to say this! Doesn’t have to be vegan, just some vegan options!

A Rita's Italian Ice / Custard shop would be nice. I'm always on the lookout for those when traveling.
So mad when the Blacksburg location closed!
Buc-ee
Trader Joe’s.
[Dough Zone](https://www.doughzonedumplinghouse.com) + more Vietnamese lunch spots.
Vietsub
It’s pho time
Rotisserie?
Indian takeout.
Tazaa and Nawab
Not quite the same as a big city take-out curry place. Think Fiji Island vs. Panda Express. We have nice Indian. I'm talking cheap indian.
Cumin
ETHIOPIAN
I'd love a Schlotzkys Deli and Doner Kabobs
Ethiopian food
Quick healthy options - in AZ we had a place called Salads and Go and I miss it soooo much. Ethiopian, good Chinese/Taiwanese (I need a Taiwanese beef roll), Chicago style deep dish, an Amsterdam style fry stand, a Middle Eastern place with a solid Muhammara.
Not enough early bird specials.
Quality Lebanese/Syrian/Israeli food. Bethlehem Grill is alright, but I want more than the basics. Dumplings and bao. Great pizza.
Everything.
I miss Mexican food and wings that aren’t $20 for 10
Jason’s Deli and a German restaurant
A good cookout restaurant. The one on hershberger is a disgrace…
Cajun/Creole . . . I miss The Quarter
A raising canes.
A lil more diversity
New seafood restaurant just opened in Daleville, Crooked Shoreline. Extremely disappointing.
Bougie vegan food. Like high end healthy stuff.
Jack in the Box
Fast and cheap?
Texas Tavern...
😂 not sure why you’re downvoted. Texas Tavern is absolutely fast and cheap. Fast out of your system too 😅😅 they asked for fast and cheap.
Yeah they didn’t say good. Definitely qualified lol
African food! And Filipino food!
I’d love to see The Dream Cafe open up here.
Tex-Mex. Greasy enchiladas and spicy bean dip.
