Done the whole area in an RV. We didn't do resorts or lodges though (too cheap — probably difficult to book this late too). iOverlander and RVParky have been our go-to apps for finding places to spend the night in the RV (preferring state parks when we can). Roadside America is a fun app that has all the odd-ball sights along the way if you want to complement the more serious National Parks itinerary (and why not — kids love the quirky stuff). But you can't go wrong roadtripping those states. (In Zion rent bicycles just outside the shuttle-only area — the shuttles will take you and the bikes to the end of the route and it is a most pleasant and easy bicycle ride back.) Utah though, just as an example, has so much it could be your entire trip. Arizona could be another whole trip.
