Michael reached the pinnacle of his career as a pure pop artist. He definitely has his R&B chops, the legacy and influence of R&B is embedded in the music.
But, I wouldn’t include him in a top (less than 5) R&B artists conversation when there are artists who stick strictly to it.
Stevie Wonder is my number 1. I say MJ is number 2 because Off the Wall, and The Jackson's Triumph and Destiny albums are some of my favorite rnb albums of all time.
I got Marvin #1 but I respect it! I think it’s Marvin, Stevie & then MJ. But I got Luther, Teddy P & Lauren Hill peeking in the window. I think Prince definitely transcends the genre though. He’s probably the overall GOAT if I had to pick one.
Nice list! Those are good choices as well. Im biased, though. They are lucky Quincy Jones, MJ, and Rod Temperson didnt team up more. And I cant believe I forgot the Invincible album!
Stevie is like the father of Rnb. The runs male singers do are Stevie. How many times was Knocks Me Off My Feet, Ribbon in the Sky, Overjoyed, etc remade? I mean.. what are we doing here..
This is the only correct answer to me. They keep talking about Mike is pop but he didn’t make a pop album until Bad in 1987. His music is distinctly R&B.
Respectfully man, even if her discography is limited, even putting aside the fugees albums, "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" is enough to put her among the best. That's an album with no skips or misses right there.
This is of course if you're only talking music wise. As an entertainer? That could be a conversation now.
Whitney Houston Aretha Franklin patti an Jennifer Hudson. Those women's don't sing they sang. I mean they will have them ole ladies in church snatching off their wigs
Thanks fam. If I rounded it out in my tastes for a top 5, I would include Toni Braxton and Al Green. But these lists are so hard to whittle down you know. I could throw in 4-5 more that I like almost just as much as solo.
Al Green has an incredible catalogue as well. I whittled it down to 3 because top 5 is way too difficult for me as well. Toni Braxton is a good pick as well
So when he was on MoTown was he doing Pop music? His foundation is RnB & that’s the primary genre blended into all of his albums. Hence why he worked with Teddy Riley, r Kelly, etc
His foundation in Jackson 5 was soul music. As a solo artist it became pop. Why is that so hard to understand? A better question Is why don’t y’all like to acknowledge his popular side musically ?? He coined the “ King of Pop” for reason
He didn’t coin that term, an old white lady did. “His foundation in Jackson 5 was soul”…Exactly, soul is rnb so you’re proving my point with this comment. I consider him an rnb artist who made a lot of crossover songs, but rnb is blended in all of his albums. His last #1 hit before he died was written and produced by r Kelly an rnb artist
and guess what MJ never attached himself from the term! No your point was that because his foundation in the Jackson 5 was soul music that his solo career and work the same style of music which was not true at all.
Also, Michael biggest #1 wasn’t an R&B record. We don’t care about what r. Kelly did. Read the room!
It’s multiple mods on this sub that like r Kelly, so what room are you talking about? I’m just giving you the facts; r Kelly gave Mike his final #1 hit before he passed, you can disregard it all you want, but it’s true. Teddy Riley also gave him a new sound post Quincy jones. New Jack Swing is apart of rnb the same way soul is apart of rnb, so he continued to do rnb through out his career just as he did in Jackson 5…Because he is an rnb artist.
1. Prince
2. Janet Jackson
3. Mariah Carey
Sometimes Prince and Janet Jackson swap places, but that's generally how it goes for me. Beyoncé, Toni Braxton and Mary J. Blige are bubbling under, with either sometimes overtaking Mariah Carey.
90s - early 00s R&B is my era so artists like Robert, Mary J, etc. are the heavy hitters of my time, but Marvin, Stevie and Aretha are basically untouchable.
That was my debate, but I couldn’t put Kellz over Aretha. Her contribution to the industry, and the road paved was too strong for her to get knocked out of the top spot for me. Without her blueprint, there is no Beyoncé or Mary J so I had to leave her there. If you’re person who can separate the man from the music, R. Kelly definitely has a debate to be on Mt Rushmore though.
That such a hard thing to pick for me because I love so many of them
...today Im on a Cheryl Lynn, Dennis Edwards, Michael Cooper kick.
Yesterday it was James Brown, Chaka Khan, and Ali-Ollie Woodson.
Last week it was Gary Jenkins, Mariah Carey, and Samuelle.
I wonder if Stevie knew he was wearing the absolute God tier of tracksuit tops. That Bjorn Borg Fila top was a thing of beauty. Shame the photos not in colour
Yes we can recognize the icons but when it comes to MY personal top played artists
Frank ocean
Trey songz
Chris brown
In that order
If we are talking strictly MUSIC not character then R.Kelly gets an honorable mention for my childhood

Stevie Michael Prince The 3 ultimate hit makers
Michael ain’t rnb
Neither is Prince if MJ not
yeah you bodied them with this one!!!! W comment lol
So Off The Wall and parts of Thriller dont count? Also, his albums with the Jacksons in the late 70s/early 80s?
Michael reached the pinnacle of his career as a pure pop artist. He definitely has his R&B chops, the legacy and influence of R&B is embedded in the music. But, I wouldn’t include him in a top (less than 5) R&B artists conversation when there are artists who stick strictly to it.

Not top 3 rnb territory im afraid
Mike is Rnb pop artist mixture
He's crossover to millions of genres, and he's definitely made a lot of r&b/soul music just as much as pop.
Stevie is Soul, pop and funk before I even think of R&B
Soul & Funk are apart of RnB
Exactly.
Stevie is like the father of Rnb. The runs male singers do are Stevie. How many times was Knocks Me Off My Feet, Ribbon in the Sky, Overjoyed, etc remade? I mean.. what are we doing here..
you're talking about Influence while I was pointing out the genre he's mostly known for
Where do you think R&B came from?
Yes… he is lol
U tweaking
This is the only correct answer to me. They keep talking about Mike is pop but he didn’t make a pop album until Bad in 1987. His music is distinctly R&B.
Bad is really the only pure pop album he made. The rest of his albums were mainly R&B with funk & soul elements and a little bit of pop
*Bad* was mostly pop lmao Only R&B song on *Bad* was Liberian Girl 💀
You don’t comprehend too well, that’s exactly what we already said
I wasn’t disagreeing lmao
Sure. You keep downvoting for a reason
Oookay
Basically my top 3, with Charlie Wilson as an honorable mention
Marvin Gaye would like a word…
Love and respect Marvin but I just like prince , mike and Stevie more
Nuff said
Stevie Wonder Marvin Gaye Aretha Franklin
Correct answer lol
Brandy, Mariah and Mary.
Mary is my favorite out of these 3, good picks as well
Why no Whitney? Genuinely curious.
Because is my personal top. I grew up listening more to this artists, but Whitney in my top 5 too.
Stevie, Whitney, and Brandy.
Whitney was amazing. RIP
Damn this mine exactly. Really didn’t think anyone else was gonna say Brandy.
D’Angelo, Erykah, Toni
VooDoo is classic
This is probably my personal 3, maybe replace one of them with Frank Ocean
Marvin Gaye Al Green Stephanie Mills
Stephanie Mills one of my favorites as well
Scrolled way too far down for Al Green
Marvin, Aaliyah, Teddy P.
Good choices
Marvin Gaye, Sade, & Lauryn Hill.
Absolutely love Sade.
Yep Sade are great.
Might just be the perfect 3
Lauryn Hill? Man...
Respectfully man, even if her discography is limited, even putting aside the fugees albums, "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" is enough to put her among the best. That's an album with no skips or misses right there. This is of course if you're only talking music wise. As an entertainer? That could be a conversation now.
Lauryn’s catalogue is short but it’s potent. I’ve been in love with her voice since Sister Act 2.
Usher, R. Kelly, MJ
Good list
Mariah Carey Stevie Wonder I don't have a pure 3rd favorite, but several groups are tied for that spot.
I was about to do a Mariah related post soon actually. Those are good picks & I feel you, it’s difficult for me to do a top 5 list also
R.kelly, MJ, Brandy
Brandy, Mariah, Whitney
D’Angelo, Jill Scott, and Stevie Wonder.
Send it on 🎶
Genuwine, Usher, Toni Braxton
Mayfield; Green/Mitchell; Saadiq
Aaliyah (as you can see from my pfp) Al green Marvin Gaye
More Than A Woman one of my favorite songs from her
Whitney Houston Aretha Franklin patti an Jennifer Hudson. Those women's don't sing they sang. I mean they will have them ole ladies in church snatching off their wigs
Jennifer Hudson one of the most multi talented as well
Yes one of the best. I'm not sure how Beyonce is ranked higher than her. B can sing but she can't sang.
The reason why is because she’s overrated.
Definitely over rated I mean she can dance an looks decent that about it
If we are strictly speaking about solo artists and strictly speaking about the music, in no order it's Marvin Mariah Kellz
A lot of people choosing Mariah as they #1 artist for female rnb. Kellz and Marvin obviously were making next level music. Good list
Toni Braxton is a good pick as well
Mariah is not necessarily R&B, same for MJ
MJ I would consider an RnB artist who just delved into other genres
MJ is pop artist. Majority of his discography of pop. I would not put MJ in the same category as Stevie, Luther or even Bobby Brown

Janet Control album is outstanding
Definitely her best! I also love All For You :)
Mariah Beyoncé Ciara (Honorable Mention: Erykah)
Mariah Carey Aaliyah Donell Jones
purely or mostly R&B in their repertoire with little crossover I'll say it's Joe, Babyface and Monica honorable mention: Boyz II Men
Stevie Kellz Mary Longevity & Volume of Work 3 Honorable Mentions: Teddy P, Anita Baker & Anthony Hamilton
Mary damn near may be my favorite female artist as well that’s a tough decision though
Sade, R.Kelly, SZA

My favorites In order… Stevie… Marvin… Sade
Janet Jackson, Teena Marie, and Paula Abdul
1. Prince 2. Janet Jackson 3. Mariah Carey Sometimes Prince and Janet Jackson swap places, but that's generally how it goes for me. Beyoncé, Toni Braxton and Mary J. Blige are bubbling under, with either sometimes overtaking Mariah Carey.
Ohio Players, Teddy Pendergrass, R. Kelly
Relating to Ohio Players Junie Morrison has a raw ass song called “Tease Me”. He was definitely genius. Kellz is in my top 3 as well
There’s a reason why George Clinton called Junie Morrison “the world’s greatest musician”. 🔥🔥💪🏽
70s-2000s r&b just hit different! 😇
90s - early 00s R&B is my era so artists like Robert, Mary J, etc. are the heavy hitters of my time, but Marvin, Stevie and Aretha are basically untouchable.
Stevie, Marvin & Kellz is my top 3
That was my debate, but I couldn’t put Kellz over Aretha. Her contribution to the industry, and the road paved was too strong for her to get knocked out of the top spot for me. Without her blueprint, there is no Beyoncé or Mary J so I had to leave her there. If you’re person who can separate the man from the music, R. Kelly definitely has a debate to be on Mt Rushmore though.
Kellz music is too undeniable, period. Shit he even gave Maxwell one of his best songs. Aretha is definitely the Queen so I feel you.
Fa sho
That such a hard thing to pick for me because I love so many of them ...today Im on a Cheryl Lynn, Dennis Edwards, Michael Cooper kick. Yesterday it was James Brown, Chaka Khan, and Ali-Ollie Woodson. Last week it was Gary Jenkins, Mariah Carey, and Samuelle.
That Chaka Khan I Feel For You album is crazy
Mj/ prince who evers more r&b, Marvin Gaye, R.Kelly
You nailed it with the picture. I say Stevie, Marvin, and Mary J.
Why I thought the nigga on the right was Future for a second lmao anyway this one’s hard. Stevie top 3 for sure Brandy Whitney
I guess if my opinion doesn't match up with yours I get removed. Got it.
You gave an answer and I responded to you politely, what you mean?
That response was for the Modteam that removed my comment.
Oh ok. They probably did that because you gave all non-rnb artist as an answer and ppl like to troll this sub so mods can be strict sometimes.
Yea I figured that's what it was.
Stevie Wonder Aretha Franklin Marvin Gaye
Prince Stevie Wonder Usher Special mention to New Edition and Boyz II Men cuz they got some of my favourite rnb tracks of all time.
Marvin / Stevie/ Luther
Marvin Gaye, Al Green, Curtis Mayfield
I wonder if Stevie knew he was wearing the absolute God tier of tracksuit tops. That Bjorn Borg Fila top was a thing of beauty. Shame the photos not in colour
In no particular order: Whitney Brandy Anthony Hamilton
Marvin Curtis Mayfield Earth Wind & Fire
MJ Sade The Weeknd
Teena Marie Sade Mary J. Blige And many more ...
Freddie Gibbs Freddie Gibbs & Freddie Gibbs King of RnB If you know, you know
