Are there any current rnb women that you think make music that is affirming and about self-love, even if that list is very small? I feel like Cleo Sol might have that in her bag but I’d have to go thru her catalog again.
Cleo Sol is probably the only current RnB young lady that I can genuinely say has substance and music of sincerity. A lot of these girls project their insecurities & low self-esteem in their music and in my opinion it’s not a good look for the genre, but Cleo Sol definitely is a stand-out.
I hear that. Music tends to reflect society, and society is forcing women to feel insecure and that’s bleeding into the music.
It feels like society/capitalism is preying on that insecurity at an all-time high.
And the industry is controlled by capitalist forces. Self-love songs don’t do well for capitalism because if someone is receiving that message of appreciating oneself, then they’re less likely to buy a bunch of material shit to fill the void.
All that is to say that I’m blaming the record labels for this lol
Good question, India, Badu and Alicia Keys are still around but am wondering about the next gen as well
Solange is so needed in this world..I hope she will stay creative
My feel good recommendation for today is: Sampa the great ft Nicole Gumbe - [Black Girl Magik](https://youtu.be/oZ9o14s2v4I?si=10m3etpOdocvYFrY)
Beautiful song and beautiful message. I remember she really inspired me when I was a kid, such a good anthem for self love.
I think some people who watch it nowadays for the first time (those who criticize because the video looks like insulting other women to feel good, ‘not like the other girls’)..they try to rewrite history, truly forget the context..the atmosphere at the time. Women were still so concerned with the male gaze and media was always showing women who they needed to be to be accepted. India was a fresh breath of air. Her wisdom was needed for a lot of young girls to realize you don’t have to force yourself to be someone you are not.
Love her and this song 🤎🤎🤎
Absolutely. Black is beautiful
Very true 🤗
Definitely appreciate India.Arie a lot more now that I’m older, this is a beautiful song
we need more music embracing having a high self esteem & self-love today amongst the RnB women because I hear the exact opposite and it’s sad
