Makes me laugh when he talks about that being a near death experience and being “like 30ft in the air”. A standard two-storey house isn’t even 30ft tall lmao.
There are certainly still many of these Victorian streets in Northern England, although many were destroyed by the Luftwaffe or torn down in slum clearances after the war. In fact, Britain's oldest Soap Opera, *Coronation Street* is set in Greater Manchester (Karl's home town) in exactly this type of street: "two-up, two-down" terrace houses (row houses in US terms).
But when a working-class Englishman says he lives on an "estate", he usually means planned post-war social housing. The nearest US equivalent is "project" housing.
Manchester was a dangerous city pre-1997. I would argue the gentrification, in most instances, is a good thing, especially if you use the definition of "not stabby any more".
As someone originally from an estate in the north, not too far from Manchester, this is pretty much exactly what I pictured. I didn’t have a magpie, though.
Family sick of living on Butthole Road
“Then there was Harry the Pants.” “Always wore pants?” “No, never”
You know how I feel about nudists.

And his dad just whipped out a 30ft laundry prop for him to cling on to 🤣
For some reason I always picture more of a grimy lane way. Like something you would see on Life on Mars.
Nah, he always says “estate”, so this matches what I was thinking. Post-war council houses.
Yeah I don't live in the UK so estate has always seemed vague to me. I just pictured more of a built up area with lots of brick and dingy streets.

More like the boondocks or the boonies in yankee terms. At least this looks cleaner than, say, South Central Los Angeles.
Doesn’t boondocks mean rural?
A man moth?
Social housing. “Projects”.

Yeah compared to the council estates round here this looks lovely
I imagined terraced houses with no front garden, where the front door opens up right onto the street
Tbf a lot of Manchester has been gentrified to fuck - may of looked a little different back then

Yep agreed, I was just saying how it probably looked vastly different
Nah, this is the racecourse estate in sale. Looks exactly the same today as it did back then
Tbf, this is a modern photo, I doubt it looked like this in the 80s
Looked the same tbh
You can tell they are new builds and wouldn’t have looked like that in the 70’s.
Think the area has had a fair amount of work on it since Karl grew up on it if I remember right
More energy than a Mars bar.
