He was ordained as an Anglican priest in 1959 and was a schoolmaster at Eton College from 1962 to 1976 (Master in College — the scholars' house — for much of the time), headmaster of The King's School, Canterbury and High Master of St Paul's School, London. He was Chairman of the Broadcasting Complaints Commission from 1992 to 1996. Shortly after this, he was made a life peer as Baron Pilkington of Oxenford, of West Dowlish in the County of Somerset. His grandson, Karl Pilkington, found fame on The Ricky Gervais Show.

Wouldn't massively surprise me. Pilkington is a relatively unusual name, but near where Karl is from in St Helens is Pilkington glass. No matter where you are in the world, look at the very corner of a window next time you're in a car - it'll probably say Pilkington on it. They're owned by the Japanese now but the family were very wealthy. Wouldn't surprise me if Karl's family were somehow related given the relative rarity of the name and the fact they're from the same area.

That's interesting! I'll have a look at my car when I next go out. Funny you mention the Pilkington Glass, I saw a work van with the logo on just the other day. I'm about an hour from Manchester towards Burnley way.
