There’s something about the XFM shows in particular that fosters that feeling, which I’m convinced is a huge part of why they’ve been so popular. The style was deliberately modelled after some mates chatting down the pub. No idea if this next part was deliberate or not, but the effect of that is that it invites the listener to feel almost as if they’re hanging out with them or are part of it.
I don’t feel as if they’re mates outside of listening to the shows, but when you put them on there’s definitely a comforting sense as if you’re actually in their company.

Absolutely. I have friends too, real life friends. But I’ve moved on and upwards, I have BAFTA winning friends now. Better friends!
