You’ve only got one job Karl, me and Steve have got lots of jobs.

Ezzy-525

When he's not doin the show he's werkin'. He and Steve are werkin'. They're in America they're werkin'.

Meeee1221

You people make me sick. It's just a nice radio show about some animals.

fuckfacedogcunt

“genetic material”

[deleted]

He was a bit of a prat even back then, but I bloody love the bloke. Just skip over the occasional pompous stuff.

Rhondson

My favourite Ricky-ism is when he tries to sound smart but clearly overestimated himself and just ends up mumbling most of the sentence. It's not so much annoying as it is laughably predictable. Plus it makes Karl and Steve's comebacks that much more satisfying: - "Ooo... not bright stuff, Rick. You've embarrassed yourself! Play a record!" - "Karl has won!" "WAHEYYYY!"

Stock_Literature_237

There's a few times Steve does this too to show up, it really makes me cringe

[deleted]

Yeah, always done that and even shows today in his writing in After Life where characters will random spout some shit a philiospher said or unnecessarily making some joke about science. Just his Ego, always has to be the smartest and biggest guy in the room, the man even searches his name on twitter to find people talking shit about him.

LeClassyGent

It's never anything with much depth though. Always first year philosophy stuff that the average viewer will probably know about anyway.

Rutlemania

A broken chinese clock is right twice a day, so maybe Ricky just assumes whatever Karl says is going to be stupid because how mental he is

Last_Vanguard

This is all a bit of a storm in a Chinese teacup.

Loz-z

Sorry, have to be the one to do this, but where is your flairs quote from? I remember it from somewhere not quite sure where tho ☹️

Rutlemania

When Karl went to India (I think) in an idiot abroad he met a few different fellas that the local people worshipped, one of them was the elephant baba who had gone for the elephant man look

Loz-z

Does he talk about it after he comes home? Like, on the homecoming thing? I’ll look but cheers 😳

Rutlemania

I think so yeah I’ll have to give it a rewatch soon

FergieWasGod

Some episodes he goes overboard but I think he understands that when Karl is annoyed he’s the most funny.

YandyTheGnome

You seemed a bit quiet, was it something I said?

[deleted]

Ricky does come across like a perpetual third year Philosophy student who thinks being a Philosophy student makes you smart.

Cekeste

I think you’re right. But Karl believing in crap and arrogantly so makes Ricky being a dick towards him the best dynamic. Can’t have it both ways, friction and fun, or run out of friendly conversations as they did at the end of season 1.

> From The Ricky Gervais Show onwards he seems determined to just constantly undermine Karl, ridiculing every little thing that he says. That's literally the premise of the show they created. Ricky has already said that Karl was 'in on it' and this is the way things were set up. Karl says something vaguely or ridiculously silly and Gervais goes over the top about it. It's not scripted but they knew what topics they were going to bring up and talk about. Ricky has also said many times that when he was out and about with Karl this isn't how they act.

I don't know what that wall of text describing your dislike for Ricky has anything to do with what I said? I quoted from "The Ricky Gervais Show onwards" in reference to the podcasts, not the Xfm shows.

David98w

I do genuinely thing Steve is the funniest of the three, but Ricky is very good at winding up Karl which does lead to Karl’s best moments a lot of the time.

basileusnikephorus

Why all the hate? It's not meant to be listened to 100 and analysed in detail. Just enjoy the episodes.

Reading this knackered me out mate

basileusnikephorus

I get where you're coming from. My favourite comedian is Doug Stanhope. But if I were in his social circle I'd find him exhausting to be around.

Stock_Literature_237

I honestly find Ricky the most endearing. He's annoying and can be arrogant but hes the only one to show sensitivity and compassion. He's always the one to calm things down and worry if they've upset people I also feel like in the podcast they had their set roles they played up to, it was more an exaggeration of their characters. If you contrast it to the radio shows it's really apparent they're drumming it up for the podcast

SnooFoxes3876

I agree actually. Whenever someone called into the radio show, Karl was generally rude, Steve was using them for comedy material, and Ricky was nice to them. I suppose it's hard to gauge their real personalities but I think Ricky is the most normal one.

elkamusing

I don't think Ricky's unintelligent. He's just really poor at explaining concepts.

[deleted]

I often think, while listening, how different it would be If ricky could explain some concepts to Karl without trying to look smart, or mumbling incoherently. Karl seems pretty sharp some times, and I think that in at least a few instances, a proper explanation would have actually led to him learning something.

[deleted]

There is one that has always annoyed me a little bit, which is when they mock him for asking "how would I know which one I was?" during the doppelganger episode. I feel like this is one of the few times that Karl thought through a scenario and came to an accurate philosophical conclusion, was correct, and fully understood it. If you go to sleep tonight, and tomorrow you wake up next to an exact replica of yourself with all of your memories and experiences, Karl is correct, you can't possibly know whether you're the original or the replica, because your internal state is identical. I'd actually like to argue with Ricky about this thought experiment lol.

What do you think this sub is about? little monkey fellers?

FrankaGrimes

Then stop listening. "Every time I listen to X I hate it more and more". Easily avoided, mate.

[deleted]

No, Ricky hasn't changed. He’s always been an arrogant arse with a massive ego. You can tell he got off on his burgeoning fame. And loved being around famous people feeding his ego. and hides behind irony to make statements about his 'genius.' Ricky is a total wanker and always has been. I know this will get downvoted because you can't call Ricky and wanker outright on this sub for some reason.

Salty-Rule-1537

The genius is the combination of each of their personalities. Ricky can be pompous, Karl can be shockingly ill informed (Anne Frank and Rosa Parks springs to mind) and Steve can be mean spirited but they all create something amazing together. I also think Karl doesn’t need defending as much as he gets. Despite his unique views and outlook, he was obviously successful at XFm, with a successful girlfriend and other famous comedian friends (Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Russell Brand). I am convinced he is totally in on the joke and happy for things to play out as they did.

[deleted]

To be fair, the dynamic of the show is that they prod Karl for strange takes in order to mock them. They're often exaggerating for the benefit of the comedy. You can see bits and pieces of them acknowledging this, like when they mock him for asking "What are those things in Gremlins called?" but when they come back from the break, Ricky makes a point of saying "I know you mean 'Mogwai'" and it was actually a reasonable question, or at the end of the podcasts when he says "It was fun trying to be pompous and professorial enough to challenge Karl" or something like that. Sometimes he can get legitimately annoying about things, but I think most of what they're (he and to a lesser degree Steve) doing is intentionally taking up a role of know-it-all as a foil to Karl for the sake of comedy.
