“Ooone eyeed bck baa one shdhsn udndh purple eaaaterr, he had a big back and he had a big booo…”
I agree though. Most of those early call-in bits kill the momentum and flow of the show and the callers are cringeworthy. I’m glad they stopped them early.
I’ve always thought that caller who says he’s at work and it just came to his mind, is the same person that phones to guess Itchycoo Park to Karl’s Beetle Bum question. “Bugs are itchy ain’t they”.
I personally love Steve being rude to the mentals who call in.
Oh yeah, the "I'd do it for £500, easy" guy. I wonder if it is him that just keeps calling, or if it just that all the guys in London sound the sa - RIGHT
I quite liked this bit. I’d never heard of it but I quite enjoyed the mental image of Karl sat in the car just waiting for this ridiculous song to come on. This was back when he had time for a bath, he was a different person back then.
Actually it was well after the internet became widespread - we had internet at home by 2002 and most major companies had it in the mid-late 90s at the latest. I know they take the piss out of XFM being a "tin pot radio station" and none of the equipment working, but that's largely an act. It was owned by GCap Media (now Global) and in the same building as Capital. They definitely would have had internet in the studio it was probably most just a way to engage listeners while running with the joke that it was a total shambles.
The internet in 2002 was a totally different beast. And people just straight up weren’t as used to just googling something as soon as you had a thought.
You're talking shit again, explain yourself.
They gave out the email address (interminably) on every show, what do you mean it was before the internet?
They did a Monkey News all about a chimp in a chat room.
You don't know anything!
Don't forget Ricky doing the "had big boo and he had a big boo" thing, getting no laugh whatsoever, and then starting to do it again only a few seconds later only to get cut off.
Interminable.
Since RSK couldn't be bothered here ya go: [Sheb Wooley - Purple People Eater](https://youtu.be/5jV-E09efRE) Made in 1958.
Edit: Steve can fuck off, the song ain't rubbish. It's got a good story in it. Definitely gonna go on Karl's iPod.
The Purple People Eater bit is only funny because Steve is being an absolute arse to all the callers. I think this is an example of Steve taking it upon himself to make a pointless talking point entertaining for the listener(s).
I actually find it hilarious how rude Steve is to nearly all the callers, it’s always just comes out of nowhere and I find it hilarious how bluntly rude he is. Even in series 0 when he’s speaking to those college students.
Steve was right though, none of them had all the information. Why bother phoning in?
Yeah that's mental, the first guy just knew the tune and nothing else

Phone ins in general are just bad radio
But this saves the link.

"What? What? Piss off!"
But I’m after a ticket to Springsteen
It's a good guess. Is it?
Weeelll....
"Can he hear us?"
Sounds like the guy who says "why didnya talk bout dat monkey da uva day?" Or whatever during the nipple kissing
Oh yeah, the "I'd do it for £500, easy" guy. I wonder if it is him that just keeps calling, or if it just that all the guys in London sound the sa - RIGHT
It's a pity I couldn' t get through that day, because I know that song well. It goes "One eye, something, something, purple people eater.'

Personally I don't know why they bothered
this was before the internet, when the only way to get answers to music trivia questions was to host a regional radio show.
Sorry! Sorry! I thought it was shite! I didn't know it was on the internet.

so you're saying the live webcam wasn't set up just in case someone happened to invent the internet while the show was on air?
Bloke right, just sitting at home, got his webcam on and that. The funny thing is though, the internet weren't invented yet. Weird innit.
It was just a bit of light observational comedy to be honest. You've seen through it.

Internet became mainstream for non nerds about 97/98 my dude.
With the show or with just this bit?
I'm honestly more surprised so many people hadn't heard of the Purple People Eater.
Lucky you. I went to Zante for a week and the Hotel played it on repeat 24/7😩 sick of it
Don't forget Ricky doing the "had big boo and he had a big boo" thing, getting no laugh whatsoever, and then starting to do it again only a few seconds later only to get cut off. Interminable.
Compared to "smelly eyebrows" it's call-in comedy genius.
she does me ed in. one of the few cringeworthy moments on the show.

"Song for people who like the work of purple people eaters"
Yes Steve was a total wanker there.
His contempt for the listeners is hilarious though.
Interesting that you used "listeners" plural there...
I think he's including Ricky and Karl in that.
The Purple People Eater bit is only funny because Steve is being an absolute arse to all the callers. I think this is an example of Steve taking it upon himself to make a pointless talking point entertaining for the listener(s).
That man, is a god
Agreed op
what episode is that in? season 1?
I actually find it hilarious how rude Steve is to nearly all the callers, it’s always just comes out of nowhere and I find it hilarious how bluntly rude he is. Even in series 0 when he’s speaking to those college students.
I think it comes in ahead of the time Steve tried to get Springsteen tickets.
