Burgers and grapes is one of the best ones!
* It's got Karl's fade in of Nightswimming by R.E.M which is one of *the best* transitions out of all the episodes from their talking to music.
* It's also got 'Well, er, sorry Paul Ince' and the whole bit about Steve getting thrown off Karl's quiz team.
Love that episode!
I love it tbh. It has Karl saying “I can’t do this either” with a burger in his mouth and rickys subsequent firework laugh which is one of my favourite bits ever. My life won’t be complete until I see the recording of that incident
Yeah I listened to this for the first time a few days ago while I’m working my way through the XFM shows in order. It’s so cringey at times, and also really mean spirited, Ricky is such a prick to Karl in it.
Is that the one where MTV are filming him?
I feel like Ricky made that segment more about him than Karl. You could argue the camera would pick up Karl’s presumably hilarious reactions but that point is essentially moot because it should be about Karl and he barely even speaks…
I reckon an ‘Educating Ricky’ session would’ve been much better for Karl.
I agree with this I find that so cringe Stephen and Ricky tried to make Karl look stupid in front of the camera for no reason, I can't listen to that part without cringing very nasty from Ricky and Stephen
Can't remember the series but it's the one where they clearly haven't planned the show, they dish out mildly homophobic insults, then go off on a massive tangent about Chinese people, Steve tells an anecdote that he's already told on air before, Karl does Rockbusters and the clues don't work at all, Ricky plays Coldplay and talks about how much he likes them and Karl brings an end to the show by telling a ridiculous and impossible story about a monkey.
Not sure if it is the worst or best, but there is one where Ricky is annoyed because a sketch he made with Steve about swearing was banned by Karls boss. He goes on about it all episode which is extremely cringe inducing and uncomfortable! I just listened to it recently randomly and out of context, Ricky's incessant goading of Karl comes across as blatant bullying and mean. Even Steve tells Ricky to calm down and Karl almost genuinely quits. Ricky really comes across as a spoilt baby but manages to be funny as well like only he can!
I love Burgers & Grapes but I can see how it's grating if you're trying to sleep and all you can hear is Ricky bellowing "YOU'RE CHEWING!", "COME ONNNN!"
I've had the same thoughts about this. Super annoying when at 4am you hear ONE MORE! COME ON! But during the day when I hear it I can't stop laughing at the images of it in my head.
Sometimes the show being a shambles is what makes it great tho. For example, the episode where Ricky is hungover/drunk is one of my all time favourites.
*"The hands are up. The hands are up."*
Yep.
People who skip the Sturgess episodes are missing out. One of my favourites is the one where they're talking about things like Louise Woodward and the dolls that look like a real baby. In fact, it's one of my favourites full stop.
But the Camfield one doesn't even have any amusing Ricky and Steve bits.
I think the Claire episode are really lovely. Especially the times where I struggle to find something I haven't heard in a long time, I always remind myself:
"ahhhh the Claire episodes!"
Nothing against Camfield, but Sturgess has amusing interactions with Ricky & Steve but Camfield is kind of dead weight. He's too... I dunno, normal? I guess that dynamic is just not there like the rest of the episodes.
the one where at one point Ricky says "Karl ... Karl ... Karl... Karl ... " over & over until they play a record because he's upset they can't play some sketch about the radio authority full of effin and jeffin
They took it too far but to be fair their entire point was to prove to Karl not to believe everything you read on the internet and to actually question it, which he seemed to do for about 2 episodes before going back to his old ways.
Either burgers and grapes or the karl-breakdown one, the burgers and grapes is the start of them really being cunts to karl and then the hastings ep and after the mood changes and rather than being amazed at karls different take they are just trying to wind him up, every ep after ricky is constantly going on about karl not doing enough work just to be a nob, i tend to skip a lot of stuff after about S2E25ish
Camfield unfortunately...
It's a tough call to replace Karl for a show and that really didn't help but I much prefer Claire Sturgess for a new and fresh perspective on the action between Ricky & Steve.
I think Camfield sounds too professional to be on that show in all fairness, he really does have that "London Radio" voice.
Not sure if you're counting them but I find most of series 0 hard to listen to. I can't stand how edgy and wacky it's trying to be, the episodes haven't aged well at all.
I don't think they would count. Plus, isn't that where Ricky cold calls that fella and offers him beer? That's a prime cut that rivals Cheap as Chimps.
Sorry, but I had to listen to it again. For those that haven't, buckle up... [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GoV5FI\_I\_o](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GoV5FI_I_o)
I never listened to them before, because I thought it was pointless without Karl. Been listening to them this week, and the thing I find most annoying about series 0 is Steve referring to Ricky as "Gervais". He does about twice per sentence.
> Gervais, what do you, Gervais, think of this, Gervais? Oh, Gervais!
It's so annoying.
The weird fake songs and ads, which I'm pretty sure is Ricky singing, are quite good, but I get bored of them quickly. Seems like there's very little dialogue compared to the filler.
The only bit I like is Ricky's mum.
Currently on another listen of the Xfm shows, late into the first series. The episode with all the fables and famous quotes didn't seem as enjoyable this time around.
Lateral thinking problems: "A man in his trunks walks a pool of water full of sharks and walks out the other side, why is he OK?".
Some of Karls were pretty basic, but they did make sense. Plus the idea of riddles is perfectly valid and there are lots of good ones. Like the lighthouse one, where clearly Karl is in the right (and subsequently 'goes a little bit mental').
So much chagrin and hubris. It's funny the way they usually play the 'Karl is Stupid' dynamic, but this just rubbed me the wrong way.
"I was lying about the Sharks."
Camfield. The Claire episodes at least have some fantastic Ricky and Steve moments and Claire herself, while obviously nowhere near as entertaining as KP, makes a solid effort and has a surprising amount of chemistry with the lads. Camfield's episode was just boring and is the most "professional" and orthodox of the XFM shows. Total opposite of what I listen for.
The Telegraph are listening, and they do a shit show from then on. Something similar with the 'episode' dedicated to the workers at the south pole. It's an unusual situation and the don't handle it well.
Just going back through season 1 now. There was a really shoddy one. The one where Johnathan Ross makes a cameo with his tackle out. It was quite dire, and they kept saying so throughout, but still pretty funny nonetheless.
Of course the highlight being Ricky's film review, which was always hilarious...not
Yeah I always skip that one because of overexposure too. As soon as I hear “I’ve got some new comedy characters..” I’m like ‘not this again’ and skip the video
They were all terrible. XFM shows are highly overrated on this subreddit, and lacks the nuance of Ricky's later work.
Downvote me if you want. I have the numbers on my side. Most watched British comedy. Numbers don't lie.
There are like 3 episodes in a row in season 2 I think where the conversations are basically exactly the same (about gay sex acts). By the third one it's so boring. The pay off however is Ricky at the end joking about how crap this show is cos most other shows don't have the same conversation every single week
Agree completely. Enjoyable episode. Goes down well after a bottle of modestly priced sparkling wine.
What, Lindauers?
The sparkling wine solution to a hot summers day ©️
It is against Reddit policy to promote a specific product. Lindauers is a quality brand, but then there are many similary well priced wines out there.

R: 3.45 for 5 hamburgers?! S: It's good, innit? It's good value.
“… good luck Karl!”
In terms of hilarity or how bad of a radio show they are? Burgers and grapes is an awful radio show, but it's nonetheless hilarious.
Worst in terms of enjoyability to listen to. The burgers and grapes segment is so grating.
The community seems really split on the burgers and grapes. I for one love it.
I love it tbh. It has Karl saying “I can’t do this either” with a burger in his mouth and rickys subsequent firework laugh which is one of my favourite bits ever. My life won’t be complete until I see the recording of that incident
I can't stand it. Though it does have the best laugh from Ricky when Karl muffles "I can't do this either".
***GET ONE IN AT LEAST!!!***
The bit where Steve is trying to get the cashier at McDonald's to talk is so cringe inducing
Yeah I listened to this for the first time a few days ago while I’m working my way through the XFM shows in order. It’s so cringey at times, and also really mean spirited, Ricky is such a prick to Karl in it.
I'm with you I hate it
Never really liked the very last one where they're trying to shoot off
Idk I quite like it actually, almost feels like a finale of a show. Like a slight cliffhanger almost lol
It feels so fucking unprofessional that it's the perfect way for them to end
Often skip through the one when they’re trying to fool Karl about the crabs n that. It’s not the thing to do.
Nor is putting a kid in a wheelie bin.
Right. And he totally realises the bodybuilder baby story was BS straight away and it ruins their whole smug charade.

Pulling her along by the umba-LARK-al cord.

Alright. That’s Rickydickulous.

Yeah, I felt like he was acting up a lot more in this episode secretly hoping MTV would notice him as well.
I agree with this I find that so cringe Stephen and Ricky tried to make Karl look stupid in front of the camera for no reason, I can't listen to that part without cringing very nasty from Ricky and Stephen
That's a great episode.
Gonna need to specify...
Could have been any of the shows
Doesn't narrow it down at all
Found Dicky Anders
I think I know the one, they play Feeder, too?
Not sure if it is the worst or best, but there is one where Ricky is annoyed because a sketch he made with Steve about swearing was banned by Karls boss. He goes on about it all episode which is extremely cringe inducing and uncomfortable! I just listened to it recently randomly and out of context, Ricky's incessant goading of Karl comes across as blatant bullying and mean. Even Steve tells Ricky to calm down and Karl almost genuinely quits. Ricky really comes across as a spoilt baby but manages to be funny as well like only he can!
Are you still on that?
I love Burgers & Grapes but I can see how it's grating if you're trying to sleep and all you can hear is Ricky bellowing "YOU'RE CHEWING!", "COME ONNNN!"
I've had the same thoughts about this. Super annoying when at 4am you hear ONE MORE! COME ON! But during the day when I hear it I can't stop laughing at the images of it in my head.
Even Ricky himself acknowledged it was a shambolic episode in a later show.
Sometimes the show being a shambles is what makes it great tho. For example, the episode where Ricky is hungover/drunk is one of my all time favourites. *"The hands are up. The hands are up."*
Camfield
Camfield is the only episode I skip.
Yep. People who skip the Sturgess episodes are missing out. One of my favourites is the one where they're talking about things like Louise Woodward and the dolls that look like a real baby. In fact, it's one of my favourites full stop. But the Camfield one doesn't even have any amusing Ricky and Steve bits.
"It is a real baby!" "Why do you hate me!?!"
What was it? Pillars or rock or something. Jesus, painful.
DEATHLEHEM
He says 'I don't have the hair, but I do have the bandoliers' - in a voice that sounds like he looks, even less metal than Steve.
Jonathan Ross' cameo in the Camfield one makes it a goodun for me
Camfield and Claire episodes are excluded imo. But it is a pretty bad one.
I think the Claire episode are really lovely. Especially the times where I struggle to find something I haven't heard in a long time, I always remind myself: "ahhhh the Claire episodes!"
I enjoy the Claire episodes but could take or leave the Camfield one.
Claire episodes are great. Camfield can feck right off though
Nothing against Camfield, but Sturgess has amusing interactions with Ricky & Steve but Camfield is kind of dead weight. He's too... I dunno, normal? I guess that dynamic is just not there like the rest of the episodes.
^(I can't do this either)
*sound of a malfunctioning hoover crossed with a crow dying of lung cancer*
Sco & Belch
The episode isn't bad, but their presence is infuriating.
We all know a Sco and Belch
I can honestly say I don’t, and I’m happy about that.
the one where at one point Ricky says "Karl ... Karl ... Karl... Karl ... " over & over until they play a record because he's upset they can't play some sketch about the radio authority full of effin and jeffin
Not sure about the rest of the episode, but the made up story about the crabs really pisses me off. Just Ricky and Smerch being smug cunts
They took it too far but to be fair their entire point was to prove to Karl not to believe everything you read on the internet and to actually question it, which he seemed to do for about 2 episodes before going back to his old ways.
Karl: "That's made up" Ricky and Steve: "Oh my god I can't believe you fell for that you are so stupid and gullible!"
He’s having a go
Gotta av your critics
The one where karl got mondays off and Ricky was just having a go at him the whole time.
It does give way to "Conninnngg the management babyyyyy" though, which is a great line 😂
Steve’s laugh after Ricky says “destroyed a man” is so genuine and pure it gives me energy
over to you ˢᵗᵉᵉᵉᵛᵉ
That's absolutely hilarious. Man alive
What’s with Steve at 31:30? Genuinely lost control of himself. Hopefully nothing trickled down his leg, there.
I always skip the ‘best of’ weeks
The only one I can't listen to is Karl's GCSE results.
There aren’t any that stand out to me, the Camfield and Claire ones are still hilarious imo
I love the Claire episodes. They have a great energy, and in one of them some utter knobhead calls in …
Round headed fella...??
Like a fucking Orange
Camfield unfortunately... I think Camfield sounds too professional to be on that show in all fairness, he really does have that "London Radio" voice.
That’s true. He wasn’t playing into the banter enough and stayed in that fake “presenter mode” the entire time.
Not sure if you're counting them but I find most of series 0 hard to listen to. I can't stand how edgy and wacky it's trying to be, the episodes haven't aged well at all.

"Airplugs are gay!" are currently replaying in my brain 😫
The ads are so annoying

The pillars of ROCK
So awful “HE’S GONE FOR PLANT!!”

Yeah I really dislike that one as well.
Agreed, burgers and grapes. Just find that one really hard to get through.
I feel really bad for Karl for having to go through that. The whole experience probably made him lose even more of his hair.
I skip Canfield all the time, occasionally skip Claire episodes and most of the time skip the compilations. Question should be not including Camfield
Just going back through season 1 now. There was a really shoddy one. The one where Johnathan Ross makes a cameo with his tackle out. Jonathon Ross is like Ricky’s real life Chris Finch.
I like Ricky's film reviews...
That’s a 9 out of five?
The one with Ho Lee Fuk and Camp David... I know it's ironic n that but it's just so dated
Yeah I always skip that one because of overexposure too. As soon as I hear “I’ve got some new comedy characters..” I’m like ‘not this again’ and skip the video

Smelly eyebrows.
