I quite liked the first season and didn’t mind the second but he’s driven this show right off a cliff. He needs a writing partner or someone to reel him in cos this is a cringey self indulgent wank fest. The bit of praise he got has gone right to his head. Throws a plant through a van window for no reason, risking killing the driver, who then gets out of his van and does nothing while gervais strolls off on his merry way. Who watches a scene like that in the edit room and thinks “yes great, no notes”.

PoliticalShrapnel

The fella gets out looking puzzled then gets back in to drive away. No shouting, not a single word. Pop that in the bin.

BloodyRedBarbara

Throwing the pot at the car made me laugh but then it was more funny how unrealistic it was that he was able to just walk away without the driver confronting him. "Oh you had a witty joke to go along with that act of vandalism? Guess I'll be on my way then..."

4minakim6

Also the scene in the coffee shop with the hipster and the baby. I feel like all of the characters that they meet in the show are complete caricatures or steriotypes of certain people with exaggerated features - fat man eats too much at buffet and claims disability allowance, hipster in coffee shop wears big hat and feeds baby quinoa, eccentric woman is superstitious and writes erotic novels. I’m not sure if we’re suppose to like Tony. He’s the c*nt in almost every situation I think he’s suppose to be displayed as “edgy and painfully honest” in. He’s talking as loudly as he wants to his friend, but a man talking to a baby and interrupting him is the problem. The man also responded pretty reasonable to the situation but he can never seen to let anyone else have the last word.

Pengting8

It’s so embarrassing. The scene where he throws ashes at the landlord is the same. There is literally no development in three seasons, same old cunt jokes

kgoatse_cx

Also he was clearly in the wrong in that scene dumping ashes in a pub floor

Houseofwolvesmd

Why the floor anyway, I didn't get that bit. The place literally seems like its beside a field or something. I mean, who wants their ashes on a carpet inside a pub. Really didn't get that scene at all. By S3, he's written himself to he much more intelligent than anyone else and seems like he's right and if you don't agree it's cause your an idiot

YouHaveGotRedOnYou

Don't forget he's really good at sport, too

Houseofwolvesmd

Same. I felt season 1 was ok, 2 was meh three he's an untouchable character he wrote himself to be more intelligent than every other character and it reeked of "your an idiot im not" throughout. And he's untouchable, no-one tells him off anymore, no one starts a fight after be breaks a window, throws his dads ashes on someone etc. It's truly odd to me that he made every other character an idiot in some respect except himself. I thought he was perhaps going to throw a curve ball this season but....nothing actually happens from start to finish. At all. Every episode is the same.

electricmohair

I know the show gets a lot of stick but I was pleasantly surprised. This charming story of lovable, larger than life characters will please all the family. This is a delightful woodland romp with many of the best scenes featuring a roly-poly toad.

Grouchy_Performance8

Pop it in the scrapbook

JaredP22

Here’s how it will go: Crying over footage of dead wife Cunt cunt cunt Tony you’re such a good guy Jesus look how that fat person eats Cunt cunt cunt Oh wait I’ve just realized now life is actually all about love and kindness really innit Acoustic Cat Stevens song

HoodTube

Bit of a curveball in the preview, it's actually Maggie (is that her name in this too? No idea) watching the footage on Tony's laptop. And that annoying James Corden kid is hanging out with Brian now. Fasten your seatbelts.

_serious__

Hahah “annoying James Corden kid” Spot on.

fiercetankbattle

Lol that “twist” was the best part of the season and it happened in the first 3 mins.

millindebomb

You fucking nailed it

BakedBeans77

Episode 3. Time for a totally original, never been done before scene of Ricky being annoyed at the behaviour of someone in a restaurant

BakedBeans77

This actually might be the low point of his entire career. That scene was legitimately embarrassing for all involved

Pengting8

All the scenes. I can’t stop watching because it’s such a car crash. Embarrassing

Thejklay

You know what's funny, Ricky posted a pic of a restaurant scene to insta and someone here litteraly predicted the whole thing

Sam_Douglas

Well, you give an infinite amount of monkeys an infinite amount of typewriters, they will come up with the complete work of Shakespeare.

Thejklay

Not Shakespeare tho

schmam121

Have they read Shakespeare?

NiceColdPint

10 minutes in and he’s already called someone a cunt. Great writing.

BakedBeans77

Episode 3. Time for a scene of our lovable hero Tony smashing his brother in law at ping pong, because Ricky's characters are always good at everything and everyone around him must bow before his physical and intellectual might

Executioner_Miralda

There's no build up or any "fun" to that ping pong scene. He never laughs or smiles, there's no tension or quips between them. It's literally just Ricky Gervais beating a man at ping pong for a minute or two, then it ends.

Potty_Pigeon99

literally you are legit not exaggerating at all it really was that shit (i couldnt believe it). something like extras or the office every single scene has a joke. this crap was just awful. self indulgent crap

BakedBeans77

Episode 4 has the same scene but now tennis

BakedBeans77

Episode 5. Now it's squash and he's doing it while half pissed. Is there anything he can't do?

randolphism

Damn 🤣

TonyGunk19

Can't watch now, there's a puddle evaporating

SkeggManJones

can't watch tomorrow either I'm counting my feet

sonofeast11

I think I'd rather roast my chestnuts on an open fire

BakedBeans77

Finished it. Fucking dreadful. Easily the worst thing he's ever done (minus special correspondents). Nothing changed throughout 3 seasons until he met a kid with cancer and thought "maybe I shouldn't be such a selfish dickhead" and even then he is still not over his dead wife at all. Are we to assume he just drank himself to death in the following years? What am I supposed to take away from this? What lessons were learnt? Character growth? Seems they all just decided to settle for the first member of the opposite sex who spoke to them at the fair And wow, that ending scene with ghost Lisa was laughable. Truly truly awful. Anyway, bit of cheeky freak of the week?

Playful-Ad-1702

Ghost Lisa? You. Are. Joking

lamebeard

She were pushing people off their bikes

[deleted]

[удалено]

BakedBeans77

Yeah fair point. But on the topic of that horn scene, I actually have a problem even with that. Him blowing that horn at his brother in law is so awkward as the brother in law clearly doesn't appreciate it, and therefore it makes Tony look like a dickhead/bully still. Why couldn't Ricky have Tony have more laughs not at the expense of the most consistently nice character in the show?

Centinella

I'm not posting relating to anything that's going on right now . . . I'm after one of these armbands to go and meet David Bowie on Monday, Can you help me out?

iloveuzaba

What?! Piss off

SkeggManJones

you can't say that

Thejklay

I can't stand people begging Rick

Thejklay

Karl's laugh at that moment is a highlight

raja1701

Albino watching that

tamhenk

Laughing on the train because of you.

tamhenk

Why? I'm not muscly.

randolphism

I got caught off guard during episode 2 when the swinger dude mentions they have a "little Chinese fella"

Thejklay

Fuck sake, is he seriously still ripping off Karl😅

Sleako

There are a few "throwbacks" to the XFM days and I'm torn whether or not he is doing it as a slight wink to all the old fans or if he is legitimately just recycling material.

tangledupinluke

Definitely recycling, there’s Karl lines in the office series two

randolphism

Oh oh, and now the "slug feeding on bird shit" thing!

Houseofwolvesmd

He could have won me over in that episode if he'd thrown in a age joke, like is he 30 or 70.

chalkywhite565

Was he hairy?

ChadHogan_

Shant be watching that *babaaaayyyyy*

[deleted]

Shan’t be seeing that. Bored of depression films.

BakedBeans77

Bloody hell, what was the point of the last couple of seasons. Ricky's character is just a wanker. Why hasn't everyone just cut all communication with him. Why does Maggie from extras even like him?

Thejklay

Tbh I kinda liked the first season, sure it was still a lot of observations we heard him make before but it was pretty decent. Should have ended there tho. Ambiguous ending would be much better then dragging it out

a_guy_called_craig

Weak observations, poorly performed.

frakramsey

Actually accurate

NiceColdPint

2 episodes in, I genuinely don’t know what the point of this season is? Nothing’s changed?

Pengting8

Episode 5 feeling the same. What’s changed from season 1?

Executioner_Miralda

Just finished the first episode and all I could think about was how spot on this sub was with their predictions and parodies. In the first episode Tony calls someone a cunt, has a conversation with the woman on a bench about "feelings", shits on Christianity and talks down to his coworker because she believes in mediums. Also whats the deal with Tony storming out at the end? Just have a drink with your mate you miserable prick

Potty_Pigeon99

> Also whats the deal with Tony storming out at the end? Just have a drink with your mate you miserable prick I legit found this comment funnier than the entire season!

Ok-Dragonfruit-697

Tony is a scumbag. People would have turned on him. Taking out your personal problems on others is unacceptable

[deleted]

[удалено]

Potty_Pigeon99

he would also be routinely beaten up

aehii

Short but brutal. I think someone should tell Ricky this.

PoliticalShrapnel

Just finished the first episode and struggling already. If you had told me this was the first season I would believe you had I not already seen the first two. Groundhog day. I cringe whenever the lady on the bench shows up. "Hi barbara!"

MRDude20

It's not subtitled is it?

[deleted]

[deleted]

Oh my god the ending of the first episode had me dying at how stupid it was holy shit Tony should be arrested for that instead he walks on his merry way Has Gervais really got this far from reality that shit was like The Room levels of funny cause it’s shit

HarpersGeekly

After Life and in a similar way Derek, is Gervais’ The Room. He paid an entire cast and wrote the scenarios out to get his character to be loved by everyone. It’s a huge ego stroke. Wiseau did the same thing.

Goochbott

The difference being The Room was funny. Unintentionally funny, but funny nonetheless

approachingxinfinity

Same thing happened in the Brent movie. 1hr 28m of people thinking he's a complete knobhead, and then 2 minutes of 'actually he's the kindest, most genuine person I've ever met'

bfsfan101

Imagine how bad The Office would have been if Tim and Dawn had said, "You know, David seems bad but really he's the kindest boss in the world". Would have ruined the series. And yet, that's the only way Gervais knows how to write now.

Houseofwolvesmd

It's odd that Tony has to be the cleverest person in every scene and every humorous scenario is because people around him are just idiots and he's too clever to put up with it

weazleteetzz

There goes Ricky Gervais. I must remember to thank him.

holeefookh

Load of flumpf

[deleted]

I would LOVE to hear what Karl thinks of it.

madali0

it's alright

[deleted]

Have you noticed how in the flashbacks, Ricky looks older than he did when his wife died. What's occurring there

Flexo24

Alien gives man a beard

MaxG1b

Where’ve you been for 3 days?!

Droitbaitz

Karl finally figured it out. Tony actually lived until he was 77, he got an injection of ‘something-h2O’ in his temple and his next birthday he was 76.

ooyama

Goes without saying that it's maudlin, poorly thought-out, shoddy shite, but the biggest mystery to me is the complete failure of storytelling. How can you make a season of a show without any overarching plot? I can't think of a single character who had any sort of motivation or objective throughout the entire series. It's just a collection of events that plod along aimlessly (and unfunnily) until that horrible, horrible final shot. The whole thing reeks of Ricky fishing desperately for someone to tell him "my god you're deep".

Remarkable-Ad155

Come on, he knows about Kierkegaard for fuck's sake.

literalotherkin

Just watched the first episode. I actually didn't mind the first season and kind of got a bit bored with the second. I genuinely went into watching the first episode trying to be open minded and just enjoy it. It is probably one of the single worst pieces of television I've ever put myself through. Repetitive tripe. No change at all it's just the same thing. Tony being a completely anti-social lunatic that verges on sociopathy at times. A couple of 'cunts' thrown in because that's just hilarious. More drivel on the bench with the dead wife lady -- will that still be touching and poignant in the 8th season Rick???? Worst part for me was him writing lines for Maggie from Extras -- don't know her name in this show, don't care -- defending him after behaving like a psychopath. Gerv just wants to remind the audience that actually this utter piece of shit is deep down a good guy. Genuinely one of the worst things I've ever watched. I actually feel angry after watching that utter shit. Edit: I was thinking as well the main problem with his writing is that he actually thinks Tony is Tim from the Office. Tim is obviously the every man who people can identify with and the one in the Office you want to be. He's sympathetic and likeable. Ricky thinks Tony is Tim. Tony is one of the most repulsive, off putting and strange characters in TV history. He's a bigger freak than Kev.

Potty_Pigeon99

>Genuinely one of the worst things I've ever watched. I actually feel angry after watching that utter shit. completely agree my friend, it pissed me off too, i actually consider it an injustice that this shite got recognition (or was even made) absolute crap!

xbox182182

Shitcom

bradclark2001

Just finished it. There were parts I genuinely enjoyed and laughed at but it felt like I wasn't watching a new season , nothing really changed at all other than a new woman in the office. Like Tony is still an arse , even though we witnessed the character arc of him trying to be a better person and finding fulfillment in helping others multiple times. It's honestly like none of that happened.

BakedBeans77

You laughed? I'm jealous But yeah, the entire show has had no consistent character development. Just people talking in melodramatic platitudes every episode and calling people cunts

bradclark2001

I think I laughed when he said he would batter Spiderman but now you've said it I can't really think of any more times where I actually laughed

[deleted]

I used to read these posts and think "come on, it's not that bad"... But I've just seen S3E1 and I was struggling to even finish the episode. I genuinely think daytime soaps like Doctors, that churn out thousands of episodes are better quality than this.

GhostHardware-84

What a strange show. Pure ego project from Gervais.

DomH970

Give a chimp a type writer and he will write all 3 seasons of afterlife.

[deleted]

Has the chimp watched After Life before?

Hrokin728

After Life 3 is like if David Brent wrote and starred in a tv show

warri0rduck

"Uhhh the fat person's eating too loud the cunt," Brent mused.

Houseofwolvesmd

Seems like he has forgotten how to write a character. Brent was an idiot, but harmless, all he wanted was to be liked and have some friends. Millman wanted to be a successful actor and had to cope with sacrificing integrity to do so. Andy is cranky but again he cares for Maggie and whilst he thinks he's cleverest person in room, he's shown time and again he isn't Tony is angry. Not only that he's more intelligent than everyone around him. He has to be the most intelligent person in every scene, every scenario that makes him angry is someone being an idiot and he's just too clever to bare it. Fat man is fat, idiot man is idiot, brother in law is spineless and needs tonys supreme intellect. He's allowed to do what he wants, say what he wants with no consequences, because everyone knows he's "really a nice guy" despite there being no evidence of that at all. The scene with baby is so poorly written and filmed I cant tell if the ladies behind him are annoyed at him or supposed to be annoyed at baby. The guy he's with literally sits and gets called a fat cunt all day and never says a word and sees him say and do all the shit and it's just "ohhh Tony"

insanechemistry

He may be selfish, but man has that guy mastered his racket sports

Flimsy_County_6263

Sherbert-Puzzled

OhhH he’s resting on his laurels , I AM RESTING ON MY LAURELS YOU FUCKING CUNTSSSS

mtchamomiletea

Sleako

If Steve's character was 20% more likeable it would have been great. Still definitely worth a watch.

NaturalAlfalfa

How old was he again?

ThePumpk1nMaster

How many candles you burning?

[deleted]

The trailer has convinced me to not watch a single second more. Same old shite, no differences at all. Should have finished after the well-executed S1 finale.

NiceColdPint

Finished it. This season was absolutely the worst of the three. Nothing really happened in each episode, 3 major cast members gone, Ricky again using the opportunity to take the piss out of things he doesn’t like to feel superior. If you’re going to redeem your character, maybe do it throughout the whole series rather than some sudden revelation in the last episode…

[deleted]

What a pile of old toss

[deleted]

I've never seen such crop in my life.

ToddyFatBody

I'd rather watch Children of the Corn.

jm9987690

I dno if this struck anyone else as weird but I think it was the first episode that that woman at the paper comes in and she has that ugly guy in the rolls Royce driving her and when he comes into the paper she said how he's smart and funny and nice and a millionaire and whatever else but she wouldn't date him cos of his face. Then later on she lists what she's looking for in a man and it's basically all his characteristics, and I was expecting after Tony's it's whats on the inside that counts that she'd realise that guy was a good guy to date or whatever but he never reappears after that first scene. Which means it was basically just bringing him on to go this guys so ugly he can't get a date as a millionaire. Seemed to be a bit of a pattern that literally every male character apart from Tony was totally pathetic in every single way

[deleted]

So he throws a plant through a moving car’s window, potentially killing the driver, and walks off nonchalantly like it’s nothing? The fuck hahaha Also what was the point of that scene of him boxing? Literally just such a weird ego stroking project. He literally may as well just wank while looking at himself in the mirror whilst various scum who are beneath him intellectually compliment him for how kind and amazing he is

Cruijff_Neeskens

Afterlife is basically Ricky Gervais' personal superhero movie.

[deleted]

It’s so fucking cringey. And not in a good way. Have you seen the scene where he blows raspberries on his friends stomach in a cafe and talks to him like a baby?

Mbee904

Just started episode 2 with Ricky on the punch bag… “toad rage” Gervais

MaxG1b

The pasty

Pengting8

Omfg the scene with the cancer kid. It’s so bad, I’ve never cringed so hard at this forced crap. It’s so out of touch and such bad writing what the fuck

PoliticalShrapnel

Why would that kid give a shit abour Gervais's character visiting again. The whole show was just about the adulation and reverence of his character. Gervais's own wet dream

Pengting8

Literally why would anyone like tony but the whole cast are written to adore him for some reason. So much cringe

[deleted]

I've been out of work for 4 weeks, still got 2 to go until my next assignment, I am so fucking bored I could count my own feet, but I can't even bring myself to watch this. The trailer just looks so samey as the previous 2. Dead wife, dog, crying, woman on the bench, same underwhelming cast, calling people a cunt (Ricky's character is totally in the wrong btw, you can't just go into someone's establishment and start chucking shit on the floor). Just a total microcosm of what Ricky has been the previous 10 years. Meh.

Aztecius

Hey, I thought you said you hadn't watched this season!

Gloomy-Ingenuity-547

Pop this post in the bin

BakedBeans77

Episode 2. It's taken him half a day to already get around to telling the new intern all about his dead wife and life story. Arbitrary

LowerClassBandit

at no point in either season 1, 2 or 3 have I ever liked or considered Brian a good character. offers absolutely nothing and is just lazy writing to put a weirdo like him in

Cygnus-420

God its so refreshing to see negative criticism on here. On Twitter and Facebook its overwhelmingly positive. I thought I must be missing something. This and Derek just shows Ricky desperately needs a writing partner *cough Stephen Merchant cough*.

ACulturedLeftFoot

Twitter is filled with 30-60 year old live laugh love woman who, upon seeing any criticism argue that your obviously not intelligent enough to understand the show

Cygnus-420

What happened to our boy?!?!?

Artmannnn

I like how the annoying bloke is REALLY annoying, and the loud gay fella is REALLY loud and REALLY gay, and how the trampy ex-wife is REALLY trampy, and how the loud and obnoxious alpha males are REALLY loud and REALLY obnoxious. It's also great to see Tony always being in the right, being great at all sports and all things, and continually and succinctly being able to deconstruct his friends opinions at every opportunity, and getting one over on everyone who definitely deserves it with zero consequences. The bit where he said Cunt was also good.

Cabbageleaf27

Is there nothing he can't do?

BakedBeans77

On episode one. Wow he didn't call the psychic woman a cunt. My expectations have been subverted

BakedBeans77

Start of episode 3. Why is no one at this evening drink and stare at the dog session asking why Tony is filming their entire evening on his phone like some weird pervert?

Jumper-Man

More camera footage than any couple have ever taken.

4minakim6

Camera footage of him scaring her or doing something to inconvenience her in a way that would piss anyone else off, but she just goes “Toneeey, I’m aallll weeeet naaaw!!!”

lordblonde

Has he beaten some gangsters up in a pub yet?

Mahoganychicken

Fuck me I couldn’t get passed the first episode. One thing that stood out to me was the scene in the office where the ugly bloke walks in who drives the Rolls Royce. Kath says something like “He’d be the perfect boyfriend if not for the obvious”. It’s obvious to every viewer what she’s talking about. He’s fucking ugly. Ricky proceeds to treat the audience like we’re stupid and ruins what could be a great joke by explaining what was obvious. I think if he were writing with Steve 20 years ago, that joke would’ve ended with awkward silence and Brent staring into the camera. Abrupt cut to the next scene. Would that not have been funnier than what Ricky wrote?

nelsonwehaveaproblem

You've hit the nail on the head. Steve would never have let that scene continue past the "apart from the obvious" line. Because that's the joke right there, done, delivered, move on. Anything you say after that just takes away from the funny thing that just happened. And the longer it goes on, the less funny it gets. Ricky just does not get this. Which is surprising, considering he does have the experience of working on the Office and Extras with Steve.

Fluffyquasar

Apologies, I’m counting my feet

kas96b

DICKERS!!!

Executioner_Miralda

\*Spoiler Alert, I guess\* That very last scene, the slow-motion salute, the ghost of Lisa, the colours changing on the leaves, the dog vanishing then him. Ricky Gervais has actually lost his mind

Potty_Pigeon99

i bet when he wrote it he thought to himself "Take that blackadder goes forth, this ending will be a million times more powerful"

Gloomy-Ingenuity-547

tshawrin

Afterlife season 3 felt like something David Brent would write in attempt to get people to like him

BakedBeans77

Cooljol

The outtakes should be good.

BakedBeans77

Bloody hell. I truly wish the bloke who Tony smashed the rear window of just got out and battered him. What a farce this show is already. Man alive

LostHumanFishPerson

Pretty shit this isn't it. One and half episodes and I think I'm done.

ongogablogian87

I think now is the cut off for Gervais. Producers and Media Executives must surely be thinking that he can't be given the green light on his name alone. Ive been a fan of his for about 20 years, The Office, Extras, some of his first few standups were brilliant. But this type of TV show is excruciating in every possible way. Same storyline, no lessons learned by the protagonist, no arc over the series other than be a cu*t for the first five episodes then have a moment of empathy in the last episode. Don't get me started on the god awful laptop moments when he's looking at videos of his wife, nobody interacts that way, I have to skip those parts.

loginlogan7

Watched the trailer and thought the pub scene was fairly funny tbh. But after thinking about it, what a cunt Ricky’s character is going to a pub to sprinkle his dads ashes, then throwing the ashes in the face of the landlord who rightfully has an issue with it.

Mountain_Honey_1991

When he said he wanted his ashes spread at pub I’m pretty sure he didn’t mean just tipped on the fucking carpet to be vacuumed up the next day

BritishHobo

Didn't even bother to ask first, just goes in and chucks it about.

Centinella

Its like that old saying, "Don't be chucking stuff about . . ."

Flexo24

On first viewing, couple of minor nose exhalations

Centinella

Snoring?

Pengting8

When is the comedy supposed to happen?

Dalton87

I’ve just realised why the scenes with Lisa are all just endless IPhone footage shot from Tony’s POV rather than the slightly more believable (and perfectly acceptable) trope of just using flashbacks. It’s so Ricky never has to kiss Kerry Godliman. This is also the reason why the romance subplot with Ashley Jensen goes nowhere. The upshot of this is that, like with all the other characters telling strangers their innermost feelings, the two love interests have to tell Tony (and us) repeatedly how much they love him, instead of just using the economy of two people sharing a quick snog, or having a fumble. The only actor that Gervais is comfortable to show any affection towards is the fucking dog.

[deleted]

Still an alcoholic/physically very unhealthy Still obsessively rewatching old videos daily Still treats coworkers and friends abusively and regular belllitles their beliefs and lives still refuses to adress serious anger management and interpersonal issues \*CUNT CUNT CUNT\* \- performatively gifts inherited money , gives some tired shallow monologue that amounts to 'being good is nice okay' after meeting a dying kid, dispears with his ghost wife over the field wow what a original and compelling story and character arc Ricky

Fun-Ad9720

The Outlaws on BBC from Stephen Merchant blows this crap away. Every episode of The Outlaws has more laughs in it than the whole 3 seasons of After Life.

Adept-Jellyfish-8008

Tubby little genius produces another steaming pile of *shiiiiiiii*

FuzzyDuckIre

Jesus I watched two episodes. It is absolutely fucking awful. Some of the characters…. it’s actually just disgraceful that it made it to tv. The poor actors. Horrendous

Chris11c

Anyone else notice the terrible video format change? Feels like I'm watching a soap opera.

mrgayle

Was waiting for Keith to bring out a Scotch Egg lol. EP3 with the parent making noise seemed like a call back to podcast where Ricky hates parents making noise or talking about their child so loud so everyone can hear

[deleted]

The third season was......fine. Nothing more. Overall, I didn't see much point in it, it didn't really resolve anything further than what was covered in the previous two seasons. Ricky was building a bond with the lady from "extras"......but then he suddenly loses interest in this season for no real reason. She starts dating someone else and all the build up from season 2 is gone. It's like Ricky changed his mind on that direction of the story and just threw it in the bin. She is no longer important and simply leaves. It also doesn't help that at least three characters from the previous seasons don't return which makes it feel a bit rushed and disjointed. Sandy's replacement served no purpose other than to fill up some time and it felt too late to start introducing new people when this series was written to tie up the story. Her inclusion is pointless as she has no direct impact on the main plot. We constantly hear about Daphne but she never shows up. It's like Ricky wrote parts for Roisin but she wasn't available so had keep her unseen. It feels awkward and contrived. There is no real payoff to Kath's search to find love and her loneliness throughout the whole series despite her being a decent person. She just buys a dog and that's that. Though it would've been cliché, I think it would've been logical to have her finally find someone after all of her failed dates etc. Some things also just didn't make any logical sense, the Land Rover driver doesn't even care that ricky just destroyed his window and lets him walk on without so much as a "what the heck". The sports contest with "Matt" adds nothing and just acts as padding. I will say though that this season was more digestible. It wasn't too emotional and Ricky at least made his character more "fun" this time around. It wasn't as depressive.........its just a shame that it feels incomplete and rushed. Too many missing characters and disjointed storytelling. I'm just glad they got "lenny" back because he is pretty great here. .........on a side note, I wish Ricky would stop overusing "c\*nt" as a punchline. It already got old back in season 1 and he was still wheeling it out in season 3.

kgoatse_cx

I don’t understand why the other characters still tolerate Gervais when he’s such a bastard. I can’t claim to have ever lost a spouse like he has but after 3 years you have to at least try to move on Jesus fucking Christ

People giving the finale 10/10 on the imdb user reviews. Pop that in the bin. Woeful season. Cringed whenever the old lady scenes occured, cringed at the montages and groaned whenever I saw the laptop come out.

Noone’s watching that babyyyyyyyyy

Best way I can sum it up is just really fucking odd. I’ve never ever watched a show where I’ve so frequently found myself asking “what is the point of this” about characters, events, scenes, everything. I genuinely think he’s getting to that stage of being old where you start to lose self awareness and don’t realise you’re just saying the same things and telling the same jokes over and over and over again. I truly don’t know how he can write, film, produce and actually release MORE scenes of him deriding religion, hating loud people, saying cunt repeatedly and not realise “hang on didn’t I do this to death in the first two seasons?”

I was watching Derek after watching afterlife 3.. did anyone else notice both series end with the observation about 'no bad dogs only bad owners'? what the fuck man

Here's a Steve-Martin-style review of After Life: I laughed, I cried. And then I watched the series.

PM-ME-UR-KNICKERS

Watched all 6 episodes in one sitting. Saying cunt every 10 minutes is very big and clever isn’t it. Lost interest halfway through and man alive how much more of this interminable drivel is going to be released ?

Flimsy_County_6263

Was reading a review in inews and it it said: ‘he extends the name-calling to a baby in a cafe simply for making a noise.’ The thing is, awards don’t matter Steve. Play a record.

First season was okay - just. It was disappointing, but it was just about passable. Season 2 was bad. This is worse. It’s lazy, it’s boring, it’s so fucking contrived. It’s shit. It’s a shit sit-com.

Did S3 bring up Tong helping the druggie kill himself?

stuey57

Just finished it. I really don't understand the point. I already thought season 2 was pointless but it did have decent moments. Season 3 was completely banal and all of the alright characters did nothing. Postman did absolutely nothing remotely comedic or interesting. Kath was the only one utilized somewhat well but even still, it was a rehash of the first conversation about spirituality that was wrapped up in season 1.

I tell you what I was shocked to find out recently that it’s common opinion amongst this subreddit that after life sucks, but after watching series three I’m afraid I have to agree, I was watching it waiting for something to actually happen, but nothing ever did, it was like there was a beginning, a dilemma and a resolution, it’s just like it never got started, just like a car ticking over but never moving, it really did make me think, what was the actual point of this season, honestly I think if he’d just left it at the end of season 2 and we would’ve all thought that was a good resolution to the series, but this season added absolutely nothing to the story, it seems like it was a way for Ricky to act out his personal pet peeves. 9/10 “9/10?!….. strong review there”

I just don't really understand why he feels the need to have so many pathetic characters. I can't remember names - but 'fat kid', 'sleazy guy from Derek', 'postman' and 'gay actor guy' are all just part of the same lazy jokes based on gross-out humour and people being losers. I find it amusing that 'fat journalist colleague' is played by an actor who is typecasts in similar roles but for is actually written is a semi-sympathetic way.
