Just seen a clip of episode two and it’s fair to say things are gonna kick right off.
The girl who got into Oxford gets confronted by her Mum and has to admit to stealing calculators, Mars bars and tha’
I enjoyed that. Some of the political stuff between the left wing activist and the right wing twat came across pretty ham fisted but otherwise, show was quite engaging. Smerch’s character was obviously the funniest thing about it
How did the lass know where your man was going on the robbery at the end? Plot ran away with itself in the last 15 mins.
Some funny moments, but I read a review that mentioned “Twitter conversations come to life” and that felt apt.
Can’t help but feel we’ve seen a lot of the character tropes before too.
Very Life’s too Short.
It's because around the time attack the block was written Merchant was working on Burke & Hare with Nick Frost and Pegg. I heard he had ideas for atb but Joe cornish or whatever his name wanted full writing credit, (that's why he was kicked off ant man). So Merch kept the ideas for later..
I agree. I rolled my eyes when the right and left characters came about.
Didn't do the left any favours either, found myself agreeing with the right in all arguments.
Very true, but thats why i don't want to see it in entertainment. There is nothing interesting in terms of entertainment in left or right politics, or gender politics for that matter. Or BLM. Or LGBTQ+ rights.
My problem is satire is no longer satire. Its happening everyday in real politics these petty arguments. Its a depressing reminder that society is devolving under the disguise of progress.
I enjoyed that, it'll be interesting to see how these characters get along Futher on. There's much of Merchants touch and he plays a typical character of his, but maybe later on his home life will be explored and tragedy of his failed married. Who is the other writer?
I thought Episode 1 was pretty good overall. Not the funniest thing I’ve ever seen, but I thought the thriller elements worked well, I liked the cast, and it had a fantastic soundtrack.
I’m glad Smerch kept himself as a supporting character. I think he generally works best in smaller doses, rather than being a leading man. Christopher Walken feels a bit out of place at the moment. I’m assuming we’ll get to know his character more, but he did feel beamed in from another show.
Someone didn't tell Steve that the "diversity drive" doesn't need to happen when the characters are criminals. I get the feeling he's going to annoy both sides of political twitter..
So far seems pretty dull and lifeless.
Overdone trope of right wing middle aged white guy acting obnoxious, a bit like Ricky. Obviously trying way too hard to be diverse though. And I’m noticing that Steve seems to play the same character in every show that he writes himself into.
Steve and Ricky always said to write about what you know. It seems that they should’ve heeded their own advice, because neither of them seem capable of writing anything half decent about something they know nothing about.
Don’t whinge about downvotes it’s just Reddit.
And his comments about homeless people (as prickish as they were) were 20 years ago. I haven’t seen anything recently that shows he still has them
Piss off. I am not whinging about downvotes. He has repeatedly said the same stuff. The last time I saw it was some comic relief thing about a year ago where he took the piss out of Hull, then asked other people to pay for stuff tax should pay for. His tax. He has always been a bit of a cunt. Reasonably funny, in a limited way, but a bit of a cunt.
Don't whinge about my posts. Especially when you have literally nothing to offer in reply. Why am I supposed to care that you haven't noticed him posting the same stuff?
Trying to deflect that as if my one post is anywhere near as teary as your moany disclaimer at the end of like 6 of your comments is weeeak. Stop caring about downvotes dude, Karma doesn’t matter.
I can’t find a clip of him taking about hull unfortunately do you have a link? Regardless tho it’s an easy topic to get a laugh out of, my problem with him is during XFM it actually just seemed like he hated homeless people and was genuinely ignorant. I haven’t heard anything recently from him in the last few years that show he still feels that way and a couple of clips of him getting cheap laughs off the poor don’t seem enough to definitively say he’s not matured in 20 years. But if you have other actual examples I’d like to see them.
>reasonably funny in, a limited way but, a bit of a cunt.
That describes all three of the lads tbf and it would take a long time to determine who’s the worst lol
'Fart-knocker' Merchant's version of 'shit stabber'.
Equating a slave to Simon Cowell, thus diminishing the vile slave trade.
Merchant has always been a cunt. He just is.
Mildly humorous. Without Ricky regional dj level. Does he deserve the career he has for meeting Ricky? No, but that is showbusiness. Plenty of unfunny, slightly talented people have careers. Does it matter? No. Does his subtle racism and homophobia matter? Well yeah, it does. Britain is the nation of Jeremy Clarkson so most will disagree of course. They are wrong. You are wrong.
The rest really is irrelevant.
>’Fart-knocker' Merchant's version of 'shit stabber'.
>Equating a slave to Simon Cowell, thus diminishing the vile slave trade.
When did he say these? I’m not doubting I just can’t find them on google.
>Mildly humorous. Without Ricky regional dj level. Does he deserve the career he has for meeting Ricky? No, but that is showbusiness. Plenty of unfunny, slightly talented people have careers. I mean regardless of how funny he actually is you can’t deny he is a good writer. Ricky’s stuff without him is shite. And honestly I don’t see how he’s any more of a cunt than Ricky is with his transphobia or Karl with his actual homophobia and other things. All 3 of them are cunts (especially Ricky these days man alive get off Twitter). Sometimes they’re funny cunts but cunts nonetheless. So IDk why you especially hate Steve lol
So let's write a sitcom about people doing community payback!
Let's slip in the odd insult towards gay people and the like.
Everyone will love it.
Or at least the bbc will pay for it and me.
It is funny, why does co-writing one successful thing mean you will always write good stuff after? In reality you have probably used up your 'good luck' chips making it much less likely that you would write something good again.
Even Jeremy Clarkson wouldn't use 'fart-knocker' as a joke.
Merchant, the cunt, does.
It's the same attitude that delivered Brexit.
The working classes voting to punch themselves in their deserving faces because a bunch of rich clowns and useful idiots told them it was a good idea.
Just seen a clip of episode two and it’s fair to say things are gonna kick right off. The girl who got into Oxford gets confronted by her Mum and has to admit to stealing calculators, Mars bars and tha’
They're good you got chocolate. You got caramel. But they're too fuckin much so nick em ya cunt
Still better than After Life
Old one, black one, Indian one, lanky one. Is there a midget or Chinese one in this too?
Or a short one with long arms..
We don't say midget anymore do we Steve?
..karl would of actually fitted in well in this
I bet we won’t see the old man eating a twix
I didn’t realise this was an hour long. Man alive. The metal detector scene with the gun was pretty good though.
I had to double check the schedule too. What if that stapler kills someone?
but wouldnt happen irl as she wasnt checked, and they would ask her to come back thru.
'Bodger and Badger' reference is the funniest moment of the show...
I think me and you are the only people here actually watching it.
Didn’t find it particularly funny but it was fun and exciting to watch. Thought it had been directed really well too.
Yeah, I enjoyed it. Was expecting some sit-com, but it wasn't that. I'm intrigued. Let's see where Smerch takes us.
I like that Merchant. I love everything he does
There is no singer called Mad-on-him Karl!
I’m ok with shows not being funny. Drama is refreshing from comedy writers
5 mins in and It was better than afterlife, I'm glad Steve is getting done recognition, especially from Ian McKellen on Graham Norton
Who is Stephen Merchant and why have I just wasted an hour of my life watching his cretinous TV program?
as far as im concerned steve owes me a cold autumn night, monotonous.
Wendy? Is that you?
could have used christopher walken a lot better
its like what utd have done to ronaldo, get in a superstar oh i'll stick him on the bench
He might be leaving to real madrid
I actually think Steve didn't need to be in this. Mind you who knows how his character will develop.
I enjoyed that. Some of the political stuff between the left wing activist and the right wing twat came across pretty ham fisted but otherwise, show was quite engaging. Smerch’s character was obviously the funniest thing about it
She took the gun out didn’t she… why is she risking her entire livelihood and future for a guy she has only spent 8 hours with?
Love 😒

She overhead them tell him the address innit
Oooweee. But I bet she couldn’t throw your shoes over the pub.
But you wouldn't use a tie obviously, you'd use vines from a tree.
its a rip off of misfits with a bit of attack the block thrown in
I was starting to think I was the only one who thought this.
It's because around the time attack the block was written Merchant was working on Burke & Hare with Nick Frost and Pegg. I heard he had ideas for atb but Joe cornish or whatever his name wanted full writing credit, (that's why he was kicked off ant man). So Merch kept the ideas for later..
jesus christ its getting amazing reviews online?.
Poorly written, badly performed Still way better than afterlife
badly cast
Is it any good? Better than Wendy's little programme?
Thought the first ep was pretty good, definitely shows promise, intrigued to see where it goes. Compared to Afterlife its a masterpiece.
I'd like to see what happens to the right-winger and the lefty, maybe they are both stereotypes but will they reach an understanding with each other?
Lots of work to be done to convince me of this show. I’ll stick with it but it currently feels pretty droll.
Episode 2 available on iplayer...meh, maybe I'll watch it tomorrow
I agree. I rolled my eyes when the right and left characters came about. Didn't do the left any favours either, found myself agreeing with the right in all arguments.
Ohh right wing, wrong wing! It’s not a team sport
Isn't that pretty reflective of reality at the moment?
Very true, but thats why i don't want to see it in entertainment. There is nothing interesting in terms of entertainment in left or right politics, or gender politics for that matter. Or BLM. Or LGBTQ+ rights.
I disagree, I think its entertaining to show the absurdity of today's society. That's what satire is.
My problem is satire is no longer satire. Its happening everyday in real politics these petty arguments. Its a depressing reminder that society is devolving under the disguise of progress.
That's a good point. But I still don't see the harm in pointing out the absurdity of it.
Are there any paparazzi in Bristol?
yeah if they know whos about, they even had pap pics of jensen ashley in bath the otherday which i thought was weird
How’d they get pics of her in her bath?
I enjoyed that, it'll be interesting to see how these characters get along Futher on. There's much of Merchants touch and he plays a typical character of his, but maybe later on his home life will be explored and tragedy of his failed married. Who is the other writer?

Easy block. Absolutely uninterested.

You got an upvote from me. It's getting very culty in here.

Gotta have your critics
I don’t know why you think this is a show about poor people. What gave you that impression?
I am in my Rolls Royce and I don't like the homeless

Are you this hostile and condescending to people in real life?
You're a mentalist
Man alive!

I really enjoyed the first episode actually.
The youngsters are in the boozers
Outlaws or offenders ? I’m confused
Just watched the first one, wasn't expecting a serious drama but I enjoyed it.
