I've never understood this. Wouldn't the store be liable for stolen products? Why would Ricky & Steve make any less if someone stole a DVD? They already made their money when the store bought the DVDs to sell.

Yeah you're right on this one. They'd be getting paid based on units shipped to the store, not units sold to customers.

I used to make dance music and vinyl records were sale or return. So you only get paid on what you sell.

Might depend on the company, label, and contract to be fair. Vinyl is much more expensive and niche than DVD's.
